Twilight descended, painting the back porch in hues of deepening serenity. I observed a captivating ballet of survival unfold, birds darting and plummeting with breathtaking precision, pursuing the scattered peanuts. Agile squirrels, their movements a blur of focused energy, competed for the same prize, the discarded shells a testament to their frantic scramble. This seemingly playful contest revealed a profound truth: the instinct for self-preservation, overriding any potential for conflict, dictated every maneuver. As twilight surrendered to the encroaching darkness, I finished my bourbon. Retreating indoors, I slumped into my recliner, its embrace a welcome respite. Channel surfing yielded nothing captivating; the television's flickering images failed to hold my attention. I reclined further, my head fell back, and my eyelids fluttered closed. Then, a jarring, violent tremor ripped through the house, culminating in a deafening detonation. I was launched from the chair, propelled by the force of the blast. Rushing to the window, I gazed out into the unnervingly silent, empty night.
Resuming my seat, I activated the remote, yet the television remained stubbornly dark. The kitchen plunged into an unnerving abyss of darkness, mirroring the failure. A blown transformer, perched atop a distant utility pole, was the only logical explanation for this electrical blackout. Retiring to my bedroom, I decided to sleep, powerless to remedy the situation. After a few hours, suddenly, light impaled my face, jolting me awake. I leaped from the bed, a surge of adrenaline propelling me to the kitchen. There, the microwave's blinking digits confirmed my suspicion: the power had returned. Returning to the bedroom, I registered the unsettling sight of the front door ajar. My muscles tensed, hearing acutely attuned to any whisper of intrusion. Vulnerable and exposed, I was a target, a sitting duck. With rapid strides, I dove beneath the small table flanking the entrance. My right hand, seizing the Walther PPK, snapped the hammer back; the pistol, poised, awaited only the slightest pressure from my trigger finger. An eternity stretched. Then, a fleeting vision: a diminutive figure, a wrath, flitting through the corridor and materializing in the entryway. Five feet of hunched misery, a bald pate gleaming under the dim light, he seemed to require the support of a staff. He stood, motionless as a statue, a predator poised, sensing my presence, awaiting my unwitting revelation. My gaze fastened upon him, a hawk on its prey, searching for the slightest hint of hostility. His head snapped towards me; eyes, startlingly white, twin orbs that seemed to pierce the gloom and sear my soul. Details were lost in shadow, clothing, features, all indistinct, mere suggestions in the gloom.
He paused, a silent entity, meticulously scanning his surroundings, his senses keenly attuned to the faintest whisper of sound, the subtlest shift in air currents, the merest trace of scent. Time stretched, an eternity, as the figure remained rooted, a statue of malevolence. I was confined, a captive in my own home, imprisoned by an unseen horror. Without preamble, the being pivoted, its gaze locking onto mine as it inexorably approached. A few strides closer, and I fired. The gunshot roared, a deafening "BOOM," the bullet impacting its chest with brutal force. Yet, its advance was unimpeded.
I continued to fire, desperate shots echoing in the suffocating silence, but it continued its relentless progress until it loomed, less than two feet away. Then, paralysis seized me. My limbs went rigid, lifeless. The pistol clattered to the floor. In a blinding flash, oblivion descended. Sight, sound, scent - all vanished. Darkness consumed me once more. Suddenly, out of nowhere, a blinding glare seared my vision, accompanied by the searing pain that jolted up my left arm. My gaze struggled to resolve the apparition before me; after a short while, a dark figure, revealed itself, with a stark white collar encircling its neck like a spectral halo.
