He had left in the fourth standard, the year his foster father's cough turned to blood, to work the timber yards and later to guide visitors through the rapids near Sykes Point. Yet there was a kind of intelligence in him that no classroom had given him and no classroom could have taken away. He could read a river the way scholars read books. He knew, from the colour of the water alone, whether the Supa dam had released water upstream. He could glance at a stranger's shoes and tell you where they had walked that morning. When the timber contractors needed a week's wages tallied in a hurry, they turned to him before their own accountants, for he could hold a whole ledger of numbers in his head and never lose his place.

The years passed this way, one river season folding into the next, until Ganapathi was a grown man of twenty-four, steady in his work and well known along the timber quarters for his quiet sharpness. It was then, at that settled age, that he married Radha.

"You were given a fine mind, and you spend it on wood and water," she would tease him some evenings, kneading dough by the lamp while he mended a fishing net with the quick, sure fingers of a man who had never been taught patience but had somehow acquired it anyway.

Radha was the daughter of a spice farmer from the hills near Anshi, and she had married Ganapathi against her family's mild protests, not because he was poor, but because he was, in her mother's words, "a man with no history." No one quite knew who his people were. He had been raised by Basavaraj Naik and his wife, a childless coracle-maker couple, who told him simply that his real parents had died when he was an infant: his mother in childbirth, his father some months later, felling timber. It was a common enough story in a forest town where the jungle took as much as it gave, and Ganapathi had never questioned it. The dead do not usually leave arguments behind.

On the back, someone had written a short, aching line of farewell in a careful, educated hand, addressed to the child she was leaving behind.

There was no name and no date, only that single sentence of sorrow. Folded beneath the photograph was a small hospital paper from a maternity home in Karwar, dated eleven days after the birthday Ganapathi had always been given, a birthday Basavaraj had described with a strange, deliberate vagueness, as though it were a number chosen rather than remembered.

Radha found him sitting on the wet floor of the ruined house long after the rain had stopped, the photograph still in his hands, his face unreadable in the way still water is unreadable; you cannot tell how deep it runs until you fall in.

"Ganapathi."

"Basavarajappa told me my mother died giving birth to me," he said slowly, "here in Dandeli, in the year of the big flood. But this hospital is in Karwar. And a woman who dies in childbirth does not write a letter of farewell eleven days later."

He was not a man given to wild theories. That, perhaps, was his greatest gift: he distrusted a story that arrived too neatly, the way he distrusted a river that ran too still before a bend. Something was being hidden downstream.

Over the following weeks, while he continued to ferry visitors past the mossy black rocks near the Sykes Point viewpoint, where the Kali dropped away into a gorge and the whole valley opened up green and immense, mist rising off the water like the forest exhaling, Ganapathi began, quietly, to ask questions. He asked the old midwife who still lived near the bus stand. He asked the retired forest ranger who had known Basavaraj since their youth. He asked the priest at the small Someshwara temple, who kept, in his own careful hand, a register of village births going back forty years.

Each answer was a small, careful non-answer. And in Dandeli, Ganapathi had long since learned, when people are careful not to lie but equally careful not to tell the truth, it means the truth is a debt someone is afraid to collect.

"There was a Kamath daughter," Radha's aunt told her one evening, over crushed cardamom pods and boiling milk, "long before your time. Sharada, sent off to college in Karwar, city-educated, too modern for her father's taste. She fell in love with a young man from the forest department, a clerk with no land and no name to speak of. When she came home carrying his child, old Kamath forbade the marriage outright, and there was a great deal of shouting in that house one monsoon. Then, one day, there was no more Sharada. Gone to her mother's people in Mangalore, they said. She never returned. Old Kamath died still angry, still unforgiving, and the family never speaks her name."

Ganapathi sat with this the way he sat with a slow river, waiting to see which way it would truly move. He went to the retired ranger again, this time not with a question but with the photograph itself, laid flat on the table between them.

The old man's hands trembled. "Basavaraj asked me for a favour once," he admitted finally, his voice thinning like smoke. "A young woman came to him in secret, through a nurse at the Karwar hospital who was his cousin. She could not keep the child; her family would have destroyed them both, her and the boy she loved, if she tried. She begged for the child to be raised somewhere safe, somewhere no Kamath would think to look, in a boatman's house, of all places, hidden in plain sight on the very river her family's estate overlooked from the hills. Basavaraj and his wife had lost three children of their own by then. He said yes before she had even finished asking."

"And my father, the clerk?"

The ranger looked away, out toward the darkening line of teak trees. "Killed in an accident on the Karwar–Dandeli road, going to fetch her, two months after you were born. She never learned of it in time. By the time she did, Basavaraj had already told the village you were his sister's orphaned son, brought from Karwar. A story sewn together, thread by thread, so that no one would ever pull at it."

Ganapathi felt something in his chest come loose, not anger, though he had braced for anger, but something closer to grief for a man he had never met, dying on a rain-slick road on his way to a family he never reached.

Ganapathi did not need the register the nuns kept, though he checked it anyway, the way he always checked a thing twice before trusting it, because the moment she turned and saw his face, she went very still, and then she began, silently, to weep.

Broken by a grief she believed final, she had let her family quietly place her in the convent home for the rest of her days, a woman erased twice over: once by her father's pride, and once by his lie.

He was still, by every official measure, an uneducated man. He could not have written the story of his own life in the fine, careful hand of the woman in that old photograph. But he had read it all the same, letter by letter, the way he read everything that mattered: not from a page, but from the world itself, the way the Kali river reads the shape of every stone it must move around, slowly, patiently, until at last it reaches the sea.
