Episode 1 – The Echo of a Laugh
The alarm clock rang like a blade cutting through the night.
She opened her eyes, heart racing, breath short. For a moment, she didn’t know if she was still in the dream. The voices still echoed in her head—classmates laughing, a boy’s voice calling her name, and then that one line that had burned itself into her memory:
“You may think we are in a straight line in 2D, but we are on Earth.”
The words lingered like smoke even as the sunlight crept into her room.
She sat up slowly. Her bedroom was small, tidy, colorless. The calendar on the wall still showed January 16, 2025. Another ordinary day. Another silent morning. She dressed in her plain office clothes, tied her hair back, and left the apartment with her usual quiet steps.
The train was already crowded. She squeezed into her usual corner seat by the window, slipping in her earphones though no music played. The moving world outside comforted her—shadows of buildings, wires, faces blurred together.
Then she heard it.
A laugh.
Her body stiffened. It was light, easy, full of life—the kind of laugh she hadn’t heard in years. She told herself it was just her imagination, just the residue of her dream. But the sound came again, clear and familiar.
She turned her head.
And there he was.
He looked older, yes—his shoulders broader, his jawline sharper—but his smile was unmistakable. Suman. The boy from her past. The boy whose voice still haunted her dreams.
Her chest tightened. The crowd around her blurred. Her palms grew damp.
No. This isn’t real. This can’t be happening.
She pushed through the crowd, stumbling, heart hammering as if she were a child again. When the train screeched to a halt at the next station, she forced herself out, running down the platform, never daring to look back.
By the time she reached her office desk, her hands were still shaking. She stared at the papers stacked in front of her, but the words swam on the page. All she could see was that smile, all she could hear was that laugh.
Her fingers, restless, opened the drawer beneath her desk. Buried under files and forgotten pens lay a single object, still sharp against the years—
A red pen.
She picked it up, holding it tightly in her hand, as if it might explain why her heart had never learned to be still.
