In the heart of the dense, ancient forests of northern Maine lies a village few have heard of, and even fewer have seen. It's called Black Hollow, and it's a place that doesn't appear on any map. Legends say it was abandoned centuries ago, but those who venture too close often speak of eerie lights and unsettling sounds that echo through the trees.
It was mid-October when David, an avid urban explorer, decided to visit Black Hollow. David was no stranger to abandoned places; he had explored ghost towns, derelict factories, and crumbling mansions. But Black Hollow had an allure he couldn’t resist, especially after hearing rumors about its mysterious history. The tales of an entire village disappearing overnight piqued his curiosity.
David's journey began early in the morning. Armed with a backpack full of supplies, a camera, and a flashlight, he set out on the path leading to the village. The trail was barely visible, covered in a thick layer of fallen leaves. The forest around him was dense and dark, even during the day, with towering trees that seemed to close in as he walked deeper into the woods.
After several hours, the forest grew eerily silent. The chirping of birds and the rustling of leaves ceased, replaced by a deafening stillness. David’s excitement turned to unease, but he pressed on. He knew he was close when he noticed remnants of an old wooden signpost, almost entirely consumed by moss. It read, in barely legible letters: "Welcome to Black Hollow."
As David stepped into the village, he felt an overwhelming sense of dread. The air was thick, and the sky seemed to darken, despite the sun still being high. The village was a ghost town, with dilapidated houses and overgrown paths. Each building seemed to lean ominously, as if they could collapse at any moment.
He took out his camera and began documenting the eerie landscape. Every click of the shutter echoed unnaturally through the empty streets. David entered the first house, its door creaking loudly as he pushed it open. Inside, the air was musty, and the floor was covered in a thick layer of dust. Broken furniture lay scattered, and the walls were adorned with old, faded portraits whose eyes seemed to follow him.
As he explored, David found old journals and newspapers, all dated to the late 1800s. They spoke of a prosperous village that thrived on timber and trade. But the entries grew darker, mentioning strange occurrences: people vanishing, odd symbols appearing in the forest, and sightings of a tall, shadowy figure. The last journal entry was particularly chilling. It described a night when the entire village gathered in the square, and a scream echoed through the woods. After that, there were no more entries.
David's unease grew as he continued to explore. He decided to check out the village square mentioned in the journal. As he approached, he saw an old well at its center, surrounded by a circle of ancient, gnarled trees. The well was covered in vines and seemed to emanate a cold, dark energy. He felt drawn to it, despite the growing sense of terror in his gut.
Peering into the well, David saw nothing but darkness. He dropped a small rock, waiting to hear the splash of water, but there was only silence. Suddenly, he heard whispers—soft, indistinct, but unmistakably human. He spun around, but there was no one there. The whispers grew louder, and the air turned icy. Shadows began to flicker at the edge of his vision.
Panicking, David backed away from the well, tripping over a loose stone. As he scrambled to his feet, he saw movement among the trees. A tall, shadowy figure with glowing red eyes was watching him. His heart pounded as the figure slowly stepped forward, its presence overwhelming and malevolent.
David turned and ran, darting between the decrepit houses. The whispers followed him, growing louder and more insistent. He glanced back and saw the shadowy figure gaining on him, its movements unnaturally smooth and fast. Desperate, he ducked into a narrow alley between two houses, hoping to lose his pursuer.
The alley led to an old church, its steeple barely standing. The doors were ajar, and David rushed inside, slamming them shut behind him. The church was dark, the air thick with decay. He fumbled for his flashlight, the beam cutting through the gloom. The interior was just as eerie as the rest of the village, with pews covered in dust and cobwebs, and an altar that seemed to pulsate with a dark energy.
As David approached the altar, he noticed a large, ornate book lying open. The pages were filled with strange symbols and drawings of the shadowy figure. The final pages depicted a ritual, with villagers gathered around the well, their faces twisted in terror. The last image was of the figure emerging from the well, dragging the villagers into the darkness.
The church doors suddenly flew open with a deafening bang, and the shadowy figure stood in the doorway. David's flashlight flickered and died, plunging him into darkness. The whispers grew to a crescendo, filling his mind with fear and despair. He backed away from the altar, stumbling over the uneven floor.
In his desperation, David remembered the camera around his neck. He quickly turned it on and used the flash to illuminate the church. The brief bursts of light revealed the figure moving closer, its eyes burning with an otherworldly fire. Each flash seemed to slow it down, giving David precious seconds to think.
With no other options, David ran toward the altar and grabbed the book. He hoped that it might contain some clue to stopping the figure. Flipping through the pages, he found a passage about sealing the evil back in the well. It required a sacrifice—a piece of the soul of one who dared to enter the village.
Realizing what he had to do, David made his way to the well, the shadowy figure close behind. He stood at the edge, the whispers now a deafening roar. Summoning all his courage, he recited the words from the book, feeling a sharp pain in his chest as if something was being torn from him. The figure let out an ear-piercing scream and began to dissolve, the red glow of its eyes fading.
As the ritual completed, David felt himself growing weaker. The well's darkness seemed to consume the figure, dragging it back into the depths. The whispers ceased, and the village fell silent once more. Exhausted and barely able to stand, David stumbled away from the well, his vision blurring.
He woke up hours later, the first light of dawn breaking through the trees. The village looked different in the morning light—still abandoned and eerie, but no longer oppressive. David knew he had to leave before the forest claimed him as it had the others.
With the last of his strength, he made his way back through the forest, the path seeming shorter and less daunting than before. When he finally emerged, he collapsed, grateful to be free of Black Hollow.
David never spoke of his experience in Black Hollow, but he never forgot it. The village remained a dark secret, its horrors hidden deep within the Maine woods. And though he never returned, he knew that some secrets were best left forgotten, buried in the shadows of the past.
