She didn’t answer immediately. Not because she didn’t know. But because, for the first time, she wasn’t trying to shape the answer into something that would reassure someone else. “I don’t know,” she said, finally.

She picked up her keys and walked to the door. Each step felt both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. She had walked this path countless times before—leaving the house for errands, for work, for things that had clear beginnings and endings.

This felt different. There was no defined return attached to it. When she stepped outside, the air felt the same. The street hadn’t changed. People moved as they always did, conversations carried on, the world remained steady and indifferent to what had just happened inside that house.

The door she had closed behind her still existed. The conversation she had stepped out of would continue, shift, or pause in her absence. Life inside that space would carry on.

But for the first time, she understood something she hadn’t fully allowed herself to before. Staying had always been a choice. And so was leaving. She stood there for a moment longer, not looking back.

Then she turned and kept walking. Not toward something fully formed. But away from something she no longer needed to remain inside; and that, she realized, was enough.
