The Day I Met You
by: Rhejam Omar
A heavy weight settled in my chest, a familiar ache tightening my throat. Sadness crept in like an uninvited guest. I sat on the grassy ground, my faded brown dress blending with the green beneath me. The mountains, jagged and majestic against the horizon, loomed like silent witnesses to my longing. I traced their peaks with my eyes, recalling a childhood dream—the belief that I could one day touch the clouds drifting lazily across the azure sky.
I remembered those innocent moments: stretching my hand toward the heavens, leaping from the roof of our cemented “cuba” like Tinkerbell, utterly convinced I could fly. I remembered the beach trip with my family, the thrill of swimming like a mermaid until terror gripped me as something pulled at my feet. My cousin saved me that day, pulling me back to safety. A small smile tugged at my lips as I wished for the simplicity of those days. But reality has a cruel way of snapping you back, doesn’t it?
I lay on the grass, letting the cool air kiss my face. The wind whispered tales of the past, carrying with it a luxurious, unfamiliar perfume. It stopped me in my tracks. No one was in sight, yet the scent was unmistakable. It triggered a cascade of cherished memories, each one tugging at my heart until tears stung my eyes.
I remembered walking alone to an important gathering, expecting nothing extraordinary from the day. But fate had other plans. It was there that I met him. We talked for hours, the world around us fading as our conversation flowed effortlessly. “I’m so glad to meet you,” I said, my smile refusing to be contained.
“Me too,” he replied warmly. “Honestly, I thought you were an introvert when I first saw you.” His eyes held mine, glimmering with gratitude. Time flew by, and before I knew it, reality intruded.
“Oh, I have to go. Work awaits,” I said reluctantly, breaking the spell.
“Really? Okay,” he replied softly. “But I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Tomorrow?” My heart fluttered at the thought. What would tomorrow bring?

The next day, at 8 AM, I rummaged through my oversized bag for my ID. My friends often teased me about my ‘travel-sized’ bag, but I loved carrying everything I might need. Finally finding my ID, I hurried into the university, my mind a chaotic mix of excitement and nervousness. His name escaped me, his face a blur. My tendency to forget such details frustrated me. But then, a voice called from behind.
“Hi, Miss?”
I turned, hope bubbling in my chest. “Oh, hi! It’s you again, Mr.?”
“Dylan. Yes, it’s me,” he said, his smile a balm to my nerves. “How are you?”
“I’m good,” I replied, willing my voice to sound steady. “Just dealing with some annoying problems, but I’m alive and happy. How about you?”
We walked together, and before I knew it, we were at the canteen. “Have you had breakfast?” he asked.
“No. How did you know?”
He chuckled. “Just a guess. Let’s eat. Join me?”
---
As we ate, we exchanged stories, each revelation a delightful surprise. I learned how much we had in common, including our shared experience of growing up far from home. Our connection deepened with every word, and Dylan quickly became a constant in my life, his messages bringing comfort and warmth. “How are you?” “Where are you now?” Simple words that meant everything.
---
One day, I received an invitation to a youth development seminar. Dylan’s excitement for me was infectious. “Message me when you arrive,” he said.
“I will,” I promised.
At the seminar, the remote location severed our connection. For four days, I was immersed in transformative experiences, meeting people with extraordinary stories. Yet, thoughts of Dylan lingered, weaving their way into my days. When I returned to the university, I found him waiting for me, his warm smile a beacon of familiarity. “Hey, take a seat,” he said, his kindness wrapping around me like a comforting blanket.
---
But life has a way of complicating things. Dylan’s messages became less frequent, our conversations strained. The void he left was unbearable. “What’s wrong?” I finally asked, the weight of unspoken words crushing me.
“Nothing, just busy,” he replied, his tone devoid of its usual warmth. The distance between us grew, leaving me haunted by memories of his laughter and care.
---
One day, I couldn’t hold back any longer. I found him in the library, my heart pounding. “Why are you avoiding me?” I asked, tears streaming down my face.
He looked at me, his own pain reflected in his eyes. “I needed space,” he admitted. “You mean so much to me, but I don’t know if it’s just friendship or something more.”
My heart raced. “I care about you too,” I whispered, the truth breaking free. We both feared losing what we had but agreed to be more honest with each other.
---
One sunny afternoon, as we walked together, Dylan stopped abruptly. He turned to me, his eyes filled with emotion. “I’ve wanted to say this for so long,” he began, his voice trembling. “You’re the sunshine that brightens my day.”
Tears welled up in my eyes as I replied, “And you’re the stars that light up my night.”
Our lips met in a tender kiss, a promise of a new beginning. In that moment, I knew our bond was something rare, a connection destined to last a lifetime.
---
As days turned to weeks, our relationship blossomed. Dylan encouraged me to pursue my passions, even joining me on unexpected adventures. One crisp morning, we decided to hike up the mountains I had once stared at so longingly. The climb was steep, our laughter echoing through the valleys as we stumbled over rocks and helped each other up. When we finally reached the summit, the view was breathtaking—rolling hills, golden sunlight, and clouds close enough to touch.
“See,” he said, catching his breath, “you’ve touched the clouds after all.”
I smiled, my hand finding his. “With you by my side, anything feels possible.”
---
But life wasn’t without its challenges. Dylan’s family decided to move abroad, a sudden decision that shook our world. “What happens to us?” I asked one tearful evening as we sat under a starry sky.
“We’ll fight,” he said, determination in his voice. “Distance won’t break us.”
True to his word, we adapted to long-distance calls, late-night messages, and surprise visits. Each challenge we faced together only strengthened our love, proving that some connections are unbreakable. Our story wasn’t just about falling in love but learning to nurture it, even when tested by time and distance.
---
And so, our journey continues—filled with laughter, trials, and dreams shared. Dylan isn’t just a part of my past or present; he’s my future. Together, we’re writing a story of love that endures, a story that began on the day I met him.
