Ramu was abondoned by his mother immediately after his birth and he was left to fend for himself in this cruel and unsympathetic world.
As time gradually passed, foes turned friends and Ramu became the apple of all eyes. He was the cynosure of the town folk though his mischiefs would often create a bit of embarassment to the elderly as well as the women of the otherwise peaceful neighbourhood.
Unmindful of the unwanted noise and hullabaloo that arose due to his sudden and uninvited appearance almost out of nowhere, Ramu kept his lanky and swaying walking style intact.
The huge banyan tree on the outskirts of the sleepy village was his resting place in the lazy afternoons. Moreover, the cool shade provided Ramu a respite from the scorching heat and he would simply dose off for a couple of hours.
School children returning home made it a routine practice to pat him gently on his back and forehead before stepping ahead. It seemed Ramu had all along been waiting for this adorable gesture and then in a lazy stretching, he would follow the gleeful kids obediently as if it was his sole responsibility to drop each child at home.
Yes, I am talking about the elephant calf, the bonafide resident of this tiny hamlet.
