**Title: That Rainy Night...**
-PRANITHA
The rain poured down in heavy sheets, drumming against the concrete of stellar springs High (school). Beneath the dark clouds that loomed overhead, two friends, Mayuri and Mytri, stood on the fragile edge of the rooftop. The world below was blurred by the downpour, a reflection of their own troubled lives. Debarred from school due to a scandal neither had the strength to bear, they felt utterly abandoned, their dreams washed away like tears in the rain.
"Promise me, Mytri," Mayuri whispered, her voice barely audible over the noise of the rain. “No matter what happens, we’ll face it together.” They were two terrified souls, entwined by circumstances and desperation.
But as fate would have it, in a fleeting instant of distraction, Mayuri slipped. Time stretched agonizingly as she tumbled from the ledge, her scream swallowed by the storm. Mytri's heart raced with fear as she watched her friend fall, her breath catching like vines in a storm. Panic seized Mytri, paralyzing her with guilt and grief. Instead of rushing to help, she turned and ran, leaving Mayuri behind, lost to this world.
Days turned into months, yet the weight of that fateful night clung to Mytri like a second skin. Guilt festered within her, leaving scars deeper than any physical wound. She retreated into the shadows of her classroom, avoiding memories of Mayuri's laughter, haunted by the promise she had broken.
Years later, Mytri enrolled in a night college, attempting to forge a new path under the soft glow of unfamiliar lights. One evening, during the ride home, the bus unexpectedly passed by stellar spring High school. As the familiar contours of the school emerged from the swirling mist of rain, a whirlpool of memories surged forth. Mytri’s breath caught again, a reminder of the friendship that once shimmered with possibility and joy, now twisted and darkened by her betrayal.
To quell the rising tide of emotions, Mytri cranked up her music, letting the melodies drown out the voices of her past. But one fateful evening, the bus broke down, stranding her on the side of the road—a place she instinctively avoided. Yet something pulled her towards the school. Dark curiosity mixed with dread as she approached the grounds, drawn by an unseen force.
As she wandered through the now-abandoned corridors, the shadows seemed alive, whispering secrets laden with sorrow. Ignoring the prickling sensation at the back of her neck, she finally found her way to Mayuri’s grave, marked by a solitary headstone shrouded in overgrowth.
“Mayuri,” she murmured, tears blurring her vision. "I’m so sorry…”
That was when it happened. A chill swept through the air, wrapping around her like a noose, tightening with every beat of her heart. Darkness seeped from the shadows, wrapping around her like a cold fog. Mayuri’s spirit emerged, eyes glinting with betrayal, pain radiating from her ethereal form.
“Why did you leave me?” Mayuri's voice was a haunting echo, a wisp of sound carried by the wind. “You promised."
Mytri trembled as the spirit loomed closer, her heart pounding with the realization of her own cowardice. “I— I was scared. I didn’t know what to do…”
But apologies fell hollow in the heavy silence that followed. Mayuri's gaze burned with judgment, unyielding. Each day henceforth, Mytri felt the essence of her friend creeping into her life, distorting her reality. Shadows whispered in the dark; reasons for her anxiety became shrouded in the essence of the girl she had left to die.
As days turned into torturous nights, the burden weighed heavily on Mytri’s soul. Her peace shattered; nightmares invaded her sleep, echoing with the laughter that once filled their friendship—a life steeped in regret.
Finally, the day came when Mytri lay on her deathbed, the world around her fading to black. In those final moments, Mayuri appeared before her, a vision both beautiful and terrifying. The clarity of her anguish washed over Mytri, the depth of Mayuri's pain wrapping around her like ice.
“Forgive me,” Mytri gasped, desperate for absolution, for release from the relentless guilt.
But Mayuri simply shook her head. “You could have saved me, Mytri. You chose to run.” With those final words, darkness engulfed them both, their souls spiraling down into the unending abyss—a bond forged not in love, but in shared despair. In the end, they became shadows of each other, forever entwined in regret, whispering through the halls of memory, seeking solace that would never come.
