Talent vs Hardwork

The music class began exactly at 5 p.m. Raju rushed through a glass of milk to get ready for the first music class. "Will I be able to sing like the singer on TV ?"asked Raju to his mother ."Yes, sure you can with plenty of practice", said his mom. His mom had learnt little music as a young girl, but sings many popular numbers flawlessly.

She drove her car towards the new music school building that stood majestically at the end of the road near the beach. A pleasant Sea breeze had already set in as early as 4 o'clock that evening Raju stepped down with so much enthusiasm, grabbing his notebook and pencil rushed towards a very broad classroom that had a small group of students. Kalpana, his mother had to wait there to listen to the singing as she had promised earlier. His mother stood there for a while as there were fewer chairs to occupy found a stone bench near the water fountain at the entrance .Raju returned in all joy after the first music class.

The lessons seemed easy that day and the next class was as interesting as the first one and the next one too. After a week, Raju started to feel bored he could not repeat the lessons or copy down the notes. He simply sat there, pretending to repeat the music notes along with others mumbling few notes or nodded in sleep now and then.

He had to repeat the same music notes far too many times. This made him feel more bored as he progressed to the next week. He thought he had learnt the notes perfectly. Yet when his turn came, he could not remember the notes and so he was never appreciated by his music teacher. There were cartoons drawn on the board behind the teacher's table. He adored the pictures as they were all from his favourite cartoons . The cartoons on the board were finely drawn with step-by-step guidance for the children to learn easily. Raju started drawing the pictures in his notebook. Instead of copying down the music notes that was given to him,he drew the pictures. Every day he learnt a new picture and a new fairy tale. This had amused him, he kept mumbling the music notes too without any interest.

Raju's mother became busy with her work as she had to travel at least 15kms to reach her office as early as 7 a.m. Raju's father owned a cake shop. She usually returns by 3 p.m in the afternoon. She managed to drop Raju at the music class regularly and picked him up after waiting outside the classroom reading some magazines. Some mothers felt elated that their kids had learnt a lot to sing in too little a time." Raju's mother thought he has not shown any progress and told Rinku's mother,"They are just five to seven years old." Rinku's mother adviced ,"We must catch them young to learn better ." "They are learning quite fast, but Kalpana need to be patient with her son,he is slow "said Hira's mother.

" What did you learn today Raju?" asked Raju's mother as he came out of the class.

To her surprise, he said" I learnt some Scooby Doo and pink Panther" his mother got confused, but she felt happy to see her child proud.

" Ha!Did you go to the wrong classroom? Well you should've learnt music, but you have drawn cartoons in your notebook. What's wrong with you Raju?"

Raju felt sad,he could not hide his disappointment," I wanted to learn music but some how I'm not getting better. I don't think I'm going to sing anything at all. I felt so bored, Let me switch over to drawing class"

Raju's mother spoke with the teacher to find out whether he is really repeating the music notes .The teacher told that he is too young to be scolded too harshly. He should be allowed to learn according to his wish. Forcing something too young might make him develop hatred or aversion to music, maybe he would learn it when he gets little older."

Raju is too slow in learning music, but too quick in learning drawing. Raju's mother agreed to change class. She wanted him to learn drawing wholeheartedly. Raju felt good. Now he thought at least he had not wasted any of his time or money. He had understood that he must choose classes that are suitable for him. He had understood whether to work hard or choose according to his wishes.

He learnt cartoons, creative v writing, painting and arithmetic except music over the years.

He reached his fifth grade and has won so many prizes at school. His teacher called him one day and asked him to prepare participants list to take up a song competition. Once again Raju intended to learn music. He approached his music teacher again in the evening along with his mother to learn quickly, some tunes just to practice for the competition.

The blending of ragas and voice modulation gave him a lot of confusion. He could not understand clearly, yet he did not give up. He was keen on learning it thoroughly with renewed interest. He sang a lot of times at home practising the song day in and day out. His cousins laughed at his voice. It didn't sound so sweet. But he did not give up. He had learnt to work hard. He had put in a lot of hard work by listening to the song and repeating it as many times as possible..

The day of the competition was fast approaching.

Raju finally learnt the song in the way as it should be sung, he listened to it to improve and fine tune. His teacher appreciated his efforts. She assured that he would win the prize.

His parents felt proud when Raju sang the song on stage at the competition. The audience applauded the child's efforts and practice. Raju's music teacher said ,"He sang in perfection,it's hard work and nothing else,he proved that hard work can beat talent ."

Raju thought he can sing better and decided to learn music with renewed interest .He joined the music class once again. He dreamed of becoming a successful singer. His parents supported his passion, encouraged him to work hard to achieve his dream.
