"What is he thinking?"
“Maybe about buying me a new treat!”
“Ah… Let me eat this mite now. It's bothering me again!”
Scratches. Bites. Licks.
“Ahhhhh... verrrry pawfully soothing now!”
“Back to the thought!”
“Maybe he’s planning our next vacation!”
Tail wags. Ears droop. Eyes shine. Tongue out. Smile blooms.
“This is it! I found it, Master!”
Suddenly, they both looked at each other.
“Whaaaaat! What’s that look mean?"
Smile disappears. Ears rise. Eyes narrow. Alert mode On.
“He looks worried! But why?!”
“Was it the bad tea from that restaurant? Or Mark? Or the rat menace at the bakery? Or maybe... his son’s questions?”
“What’s bothering him?”
“How do I find out?”
“Humans are so complex. Can’t even sort out boundaries with their urine markings. And they just flush it away!”
“They know how to negotiate softly, yet they bark louder than us.”
“They read books but not each other’s minds. I read my master’s emotions. I act. That’s enough!”
Feeling heroic, he raises his collar.
“Maybe he just needs a new treat!”
“Ahhhhh… let me scratch one more time. Still itchy!”
A pause.
He lifts his head.
“Wow… what a beautiful scenario. A yellow-red ball… sinking into the water bed.”
A quiet, funny, and profound glimpse into the thoughts of a dog resting on a beach at sunset beside his master.
