Mia sat on her living room couch, the TV playing softly in the background. The house was quiet, almost too quiet, but she tried to enjoy the rare solitude. Her parents had gone out for the evening, leaving her with strict instructions to lock all the doors and not let anyone in. She had done as told - or so she thought.

The first sign something was wrong came as a soft creak from upstairs. Mia froze, her hand hovering over her phone. The wind, she reassured herself, though the windows were shut tight. Her heart raced as the creak came again, louder this time.

She tiptoed to the kitchen, gripping the largest knife she could find. Her mind raced. It's nothing. Maybe it's just the old house settling. But then, a shadow moved across the hall. Her breath caught in her throat.

"Mia," a voice called from the darkness, soft yet chillingly familiar.

She gasped, the knife slipping from her trembling hand. It clattered onto the floor. "Who's there?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.

The shadow stepped into the dim light. Her stomach churned as recognition hit her like a punch to the gut. It was Nick - her ex-boyfriend. The one she had broken up with six months ago. The one who hadn't taken it well.

"Nick? What are you doing here?" Her voice cracked as fear rooted her to the spot.

"I came to take you back," he said, his face twisting into an unsettling grin. "We belong together, Mia. You shouldn't have left me."

Mia's blood ran cold as she noticed the duct tape and rope in his hand. This wasn't a reunion. It was an abduction.

"You're insane," she said, inching backward. Her phone was on the counter, but reaching it would mean moving closer to him.

Nick's smile vanished. "Don't say that. You made me like this, Mia. All I wanted was to love you."

He lunged toward her, but Mia grabbed the knife just in time, swinging wildly. She nicked his arm, enough to make him yelp and recoil. Using the momentary distraction, she bolted toward the front door.

Nick recovered quickly, hot on her heels. "You're not going anywhere!" he snarled, tackling her to the ground.

Mia screamed, kicking and clawing as he tried to pin her down. Her hand found a decorative lamp on the floor, and she smashed it over his head. He groaned, stunned, giving her a chance to break free.

She scrambled out the door and sprinted to a neighbor's house, banging frantically. The porch light flicked on, and the door opened to reveal her elderly neighbor holding a phone. "What's going on, Mia?" he asked.

"Call the police!" she cried. "Now!"

Nick emerged from her house, but the sight of the neighbor and the distant wail of sirens sent him running into the night. The police arrived moments later, and Mia recounted everything, her hands still shaking.

That night, as the officers assured her they would find Nick, Mia realized something chilling: she hadn't just escaped her past. She had survived it.
