A little girl, Ammu, folds paper boats and sends them down the gutter stream outside her house every evening, waiting for her mom to come home from work. One rainy night, her mom is stuck late, and Ammu falls asleep waiting by the window, paper boat in hand. That day she didn't send them down the gutter.
She Dreams As she sleeps, we follow her paper boat , it grows to the size of a real boat, sailing through a stormy, gliding through a magical and stormy version of the neighborhood streets, expertly dodging obstacles . The boat is trying to reach a lighthouse in the distance, which is actually the porch light of Ammu's house.
The boat "arrives" right when Ammu's mom's headlights shine into the driveway back in reality. Mom discovers Ammu sleeping peacefully by the window, with the damp paper boat still clutched in her hand.
Mom gently carries her to bed, and without waking her, folds a paper boat of her own and sets it on the nightstand, so Ammu wakes up to find two boats instead of one.
