Ranjan Babu is a writer. He is quite an introvert and does not like people talking with him. In his college days he had a good friend with whom he used to spend time talking. His name was Sujit Bose. He left Calcutta just after the college got over and got a job at a very well known advertising agency. More than writing new novels Ranjan Babu was very much prone to read new books. He lived in a very renowned area in Calcutta known for it's vibrant book market, College Street. Everyday he gets up, completes his morning routine and goes to the Coffee House. Ranjan Babu used to live alone so, going to the Coffee House every day did not hit him hard.
Every day while walking through the narrow footpaths of College Street, he stops at the cigarette shop and buys a pack of capstan cigarettes and goes to the Coffee House. He carries a small novel and purse with him. After reaching the Coffee House his first task is to call the bearer and order a cup of coffee for him. Ranjan Babu enjoys spending time with the cup of coffee and a book.
Although Ranjan Babu is a bookworm, nothing remained hidden from his eyes. Each and every thing which used to happen in the Coffee House he wrote it in a small diary. This is how he spends every day in the Coffee House.
One fine morning at the Coffee House, Ranjan Babu was sitting comfortably in his favorite place where he used to sit every day, he ordered a cup of coffee and was also reading a book. While sipping the coffee, a tall man with an incredibly heavy voice comes and knocks at his table, thak-thak-thak. Ranjan Babu raised his eyes in a very disturbed manner and suddenly stood up looking at the man. Unexpectedly, it was Sujit after 16 years. He was wearing a black framed spectacle, a dark green check-shirt and baggy trousers with a silver wrist watch on his right hand. Ranjan Babu was very happy to see him. He asked him to sit down and ordered another cup of coffee for him.
Both the friends talked for hours sharing old memories and also whatever happened between these 16 years. Suddenly, Sujit told something to Ranjan Babu and both of them were quite for sometime-
"Ranjan.... Doctors are saying that I only have four months. " Sujit Babu said. Ranjan was shocked hearing this heartbreaking news from him, "Sujit.. How.. I mean.. What happened suddenly? " "Cancer."
Both were quite for sometime, then, Sujit told him that he has to leave and asked Ranjan to visit his house one day and also to take care of his health.
"Ranjan, you have the capabilities of being a very successful writer. Don't waste your time. One life and one chance my friend."
Ranjan Babu's eyes were in tears. He stood up and hugged his friend, maybe for the last time. After this, they both exchanged their telephone numbers and went to their houses. After five days of their meeting Sujit Babu's wife called Ranjan and told him that he is no more. Ranjan kept the telephone quiet and cried for a few minutes. Ranjan decided to start writing again.
Three years have passed. Ranjan Babu became one of the best writers of Calcutta. He got a few prizes too for his book which he has written incorporating his friend's character in it. Ranjan Babu was an introvert, he also lost his motivation for writing but Sujit being a true friend came back to him after 16 years and motivated him saying that, 'One Life and One Chance', and passed away five days after meeting Ranjan Babu.
