On the floor lay Dante’s collar and chain.

For a few seconds, she couldn't move. She simply stared at the objects, hoping that her eyes were deceiving her.

“Dante?”

Silence.

She hurried into the bedroom.

Empty.

She checked the bathroom, the kitchen, and the living room.

Nothing.

“Dante Moretti!”

Her voice echoed through the apartment.

“Stop playing games! Where are you?”

No answer came.

A strange feeling crept into her chest.

Fear.

Not the fear she had experienced when she first encountered the ruthless mafia don four months ago, but something different. Something that made her heart ache.

For four months, she had lived with a man the entire world feared.

Dante Moretti was a merciless mafia don. He was cold, cruel, and infamous for showing no compassion towards anyone who crossed him.

Yet, during those four months, Isabella had witnessed things nobody would believe.

She had cleaned his wounds when he was too injured to move.

She had helped him bathe when his condition was at its worst.

She had brought him food and water, making sure he took care of himself even when he refused to cooperate.

Sometimes, she had stayed awake beside him throughout the night, worrying whenever his wounds began to bleed again.

And despite his terrifying personality, Dante had slowly become a familiar presence in her life.

She had even forced him to say I love you, Isabella once, simply because she wanted to hear those words.

She knew he hadn't meant them.

At least, that was what she told herself.

But she had treasured that moment anyway.

Now, he was gone.

Without a word.

Without a goodbye.

Without even leaving a message.

Isabella slowly bent down and picked up his collar and chain.

“Why did you leave?”

Her voice trembled.

“You could have at least told me.”

She looked around the empty apartment again, her eyes growing moist.

“Are you safe, Dante?”

She knew he was a dangerous man who could take care of himself. Nevertheless, the thought of something happening to him frightened her.

She had spent months caring for him.

Somewhere along the way, she had become attached to his presence.

Now, she didn't even know where he was.

And she hated how much that hurt.

She had spent months caring for him.

Somewhere along the way, she had become attached to his presence.

Now, she didn't even know where he was.

And she hated how much that hurt.

32:Tdd5,For the next three days, Isabella searched for Dante.

Every morning, she left the apartment and visited the surrounding areas.

She checked nearby places, questioned people who might have seen him, and even visited the home of her nurse friend.

She returned late every night, exhausted and disappointed.

Still, she refused to give up.

The strangest part was that she didn't even have Dante's phone number.

He had hers, but she had never thought to ask for his.

She had assumed that, as long as they were living together, she would always know where to find him.

Now, all she could do was stare at her phone, hoping that he would contact her.

Every notification made her look up.

Every unknown number made her heart beat faster.

But none of them belonged to him.

On the third evening, Isabella sat on the edge of her bed and stared at the empty space beside her with her champagne.

She was exhausted.

Her feet hurt from walking, her eyes were swollen from crying, and her mind was filled with unanswered questions.

“That's enough, Isabella,” she whispered.

She wiped her cheeks.

“You have graduated. This is supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life.”

She tried to smile.

It didn't work.

“He was never mine to begin with.”

She lowered her head.

She had known from the beginning that Dante wasn't an ordinary man. He belonged to a dangerous world that she could never fully understand.

Perhaps he had returned to that world.

Perhaps he had decided that he no longer needed her.

Whatever the reason, she couldn't spend the rest of her life waiting for someone who might never return.

Her grandmother had repeatedly asked her to come home.

Perhaps it was time.

Isabella packed her belongings and placed Dante's collar and chain carefully inside her bag.

Before leaving, she stood in the middle of the apartment one last time.

Her eyes travelled across the furniture, the sofa, and the rooms where she had spent the past four months.

Memories came rushing back.

She remembered arguing with Dante over his meals, scolding him whenever he ignored his wounds, and struggling to get him to cooperate with even the simplest things.

Despite everything, those memories brought a small smile to her face.

“Goodbye, Dante.”

She closed the door.

And just like that, she left the place where she had spent four months caring for a man who had disappeared without saying goodbye.

33:T17b8,Before leaving, Isabella had used some of the cash Dante had last withdrawn to purchase a few gifts for her father and grandmother.

Her father's birthday had fallen just two days before her graduation.

She hadn't been able to celebrate it properly, and she wanted to make up for that.

With her bags packed and the gifts safely stored, she travelled to her grandmother's home.

She had decided to settle there permanently.

She didn't particularly want to leave the apartment, but she couldn't bear the thought of returning to an empty place every night.

She had spent enough of her life feeling lonely.

She didn't want to experience that feeling again.

When she finally reached the house, she found her grandmother waiting near the gate.

The moment the older woman saw her, her face lit up.

“Isabella!”

“Grandma!”

Her grandmother hurried towards her and wrapped her in a warm embrace.

“My darling girl! Look at you!”

She held Isabella by the shoulders and examined her face.

“You should have told me you were coming today. I would have prepared your favourite food!”

Isabella laughed softly.

“I wanted to surprise you.”

“You certainly did!”

Her grandmother took one of her bags and led her inside.

“Come, sweetheart. You must be tired. You can rest here as long as you want. This is your home.”

Those words touched Isabella more deeply than her grandmother could have imagined.

This is your home.

For the first time in three days, Isabella felt as though she could breathe again.

She followed her grandmother into the living room and sat down on the sofa.

Then she noticed her mother and adopted sister, Sofia.

Her mother was seated nearby, while Sofia stood beside her.

Both women turned towards Isabella.

Her mother's face showed little warmth.

Sofia looked her up and down before giving her a small, mocking smirk.

Isabella noticed it immediately.

She also noticed the unmistakable dislike in her mother's expression.

Nevertheless, she forced herself to smile.

“Hello, Mom.”

Her mother gave her a brief nod.

“So, you've finally arrived.”

“Yes, Mom.”

Sofia said nothing.

She simply continued looking at Isabella with that strange expression before walking away.

Isabella watched her leave, confused by her behaviour.

Why is she looking at me like that?

She pushed the thought aside.

She had just returned home. She didn't want to start an argument.

After settling onto the sofa, she turned towards her mother.

“Mom, where's Dad?”

Her mother glanced at her.

“Your father is busy.”

“Busy? I thought he would be home.”

“He has an important client visiting.”

Isabella's expression brightened slightly.

“Oh! I brought him some gifts for his birthday. I missed celebrating it properly because of my graduation.”

She pointed towards her bags.

“Can I see him after his meeting?”

Her mother's face changed.

“I can't introduce you to an important client looking like a country bumpkin.”

Isabella stared at her.

“Mom?”

“You heard me.”

Her mother stood up.

“Come with me. Your father is in the study.”

Isabella followed her, confused and hurt by her mother's words.

When they reached the study, her mother opened the door and gestured for her to enter.

“Stay here. Don't wander around the house and embarrass yourself in front of the guests.”

“But, Mom, I only wanted to see Dad.”

“Isabella, don't make this difficult.”

Her mother left, closing the door behind her.

Isabella stood alone for a moment before returning to the sofa.

She looked at the gifts she had brought for her father.

She had imagined him smiling when he saw her.

She had imagined her family welcoming her home.

Instead, she felt like a stranger in her own house.

She lowered her eyes.

Perhaps she had expected too much.

34:T2108,A few minutes later, the door opened.

Sofia entered carrying a tray with a cup of coffee.

Her expression had changed completely.

She wore a bright smile that looked almost unnatural.

“Isabella!”

Isabella looked up.

“Sofia?”

“I brought you some coffee.”

Sofia approached the sofa and held out the tray.

“Here. You must be tired after your journey.”

Isabella was surprised by the sudden kindness.

“Thank you.”

She reached towards the cup.

Sofia stepped closer.

Then, as though she had suddenly lost her balance, she deliberately shifted her foot and tilted the tray.

The cup slid dangerously towards the edge.

Hot coffee splashed out, flying directly towards Isabella.

Isabella barely had time to react.

A strong hand suddenly appeared between them.

With one swift movement, the tray was knocked away.

CRASH!

The cup struck the floor and shattered into pieces.

Coffee spread across the tiles.

Before Isabella could understand what had happened, a strong arm wrapped around her and pulled her firmly against a familiar chest.

She gasped.

Her eyes squeezed shut instinctively.

For a moment, she couldn't move.

The solid chest against her felt strangely familiar, though she couldn't understand why.

The arm around her held her securely, shielding her from the broken cup and the hot coffee.

Isabella remained frozen, her fingers clutching the stranger's clothing.

She was too frightened to look up.

Sofia stood motionless.

Her eyes moved from the shattered cup to the man standing beside Isabella.

Then she looked at Isabella, and her expression changed.

The sweetness disappeared from her face.

“What is wrong with you?” Sofia snapped.

Isabella slowly opened her eyes.

She was still trying to understand what had happened when Sofia stepped towards her.

“You came back and immediately started embarrassing everyone!”

Isabella stared at her.

“What? I didn't do anything!”

“You tried to make me look bad in front of our important investor!”

“I didn't! The coffee—”

“Enough!”

Sofia's voice rose.

She looked towards the man who had rescued Isabella, then turned back to her sister.

“Do you think you can seduce the investor our family has brought here just because you have no shame?”

Isabella's eyes widened.

“Seduce him? What are you talking about?”

“You know exactly what I'm talking about!”

Sofia's face twisted with anger.

“You've barely returned, and already you're trying to attract attention!”

“That isn't true! I was only sitting here!”

“Stop lying!”

Sofia raised her hand to slap Isabella.

Isabella flinched and instinctively shut her eyes.

But the slap never came.

A strong hand caught Sofia's wrist in midair.

Everything stopped.

Sofia's raised hand remained suspended.

Isabella stood frozen, her eyes still closed.

The stranger had stopped Sofia without saying a single word.

Slowly, Isabella became aware of the silence around her.

No one was speaking.

No one was moving.

Even Sofia seemed unable to understand what had just happened.

Isabella carefully opened her eyes.

She wanted to see who had stopped the slap.

She slowly lifted her head.

First, she saw the hand gripping Sofia's wrist.

Then the arm.

Then the broad shoulders of the man standing beside her.

Her gaze travelled upwards.

And the moment she saw his face, her entire world seemed to stop.

Her lips parted.

Her eyes widened.

Her body went completely rigid.

She knew that face.

She knew those cold, dark eyes.

She knew the man whose presence had filled an empty apartment for four months.

The man she had searched for desperately over three days.

The man she had cried over when she found nothing but his collar and chain on the floor.

The man she had believed she would never see again.

Dante Moretti.

Isabella stared at him in absolute disbelief.

He was standing right there.

Alive.

Silent.

And holding Sofia's wrist.

Her heart pounded so violently that she could barely breathe.

Dante?

She couldn't bring herself to say his name aloud.

She simply stared at him, unable to understand how the man who had disappeared from her life had suddenly appeared in her own house.

Around them, everyone stood in stunned silence.

Sofia's face had turned pale.

Isabella's mother stared at the investor in disbelief.

Her grandmother looked from Isabella to the man protecting her granddaughter, unable to comprehend what she was witnessing.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody dared to interrupt the silence.

And Dante Moretti?

He didn't utter a single word.

His expression remained cold and unreadable as he held Sofia's wrist, his presence alone enough to make the entire room fall silent.

Isabella continued staring at him.

Three days ago, she had searched for him until she could barely stand.

Now, he was here.

And for reasons she couldn't understand, the ruthless mafia don she had cared for over four months was the very man who had just saved her again.

"What's going on here?" her father shouted from the staircase.
