My name is Samantha, but you can call me Sam. I’m an interior designer. I met my husband in design school. We were young and, well… happy? To cut a long story short, I got pregnant, we got secretly married, and eventually, he left. His family didn’t approve of me. So, I packed up, took my son, and moved to New York to start fresh.
“Brian! Hurry up, we’re going to be late!” It’s Monday, and today I start my new job as a design assistant in New York. After dropping my son off at school, I’m off to High Design. I’m excited and nervous; I really want this job to go well. Lunches packed, backpacks on, and we’re out the door.
“Bye, Mom! Love you—see you later!” Brian calls as he runs off to join his friends. I wave, blow him a kiss, and head to work. Now, I’m standing in front of a massive building with “High Design” etched above the doors. Here goes…
“Good morning, Samantha! Welcome to High Design!” the receptionist greets me brightly.
“Good morning, Monica!” I respond with a smile as she shows me to my desk and introduces me around the office. There’s Jared, the easy-going architect; Lindy, a sweet design assistant; Cara, the friendly senior designer; and Sandra, a kind older woman who’s also the boss’s assistant.
“Welcome, Samantha! Just settle in—everyone here is lovely,” Sandra says, giving me a warm hug and a quick rundown of my tasks for the day.
I’m halfway through the morning, starting to feel comfortable, when suddenly the room goes quiet. My heart skips as I look up and see the most amazing blue eyes staring back at me. I can’t breathe for a moment. Sandra steps over, and I realize she’s introducing me to the man with those piercing eyes—the boss, and head architect of the company.
“Hi, sir. I’m… I mean, I’m the new design assistant, Samantha,” I stammer, feeling my cheeks flush.
He stares at me for a second, then nods and heads to his office. Oh my god, did I just make a fool of myself on day one?
Everyone laughs, and Sandra pats my back reassuringly. “Don’t worry, dear, everyone has the same first reaction. Now, back to work.”
I can’t believe it—my first day, and I’m already blushing in front of my boss!
