I did not want to write to you. I wanted to write a lie. I wanted to write about how life is wonderful, how you’ll be treated fairly, and how you won’t be judged based on the color of your skin but rather by the content of your character. Sadly, my love, sometimes that just won’t be the case.
You will be so loved and protected. However, as much as I wish I could protect you from everything, I can’t. You will experience so many good things in life, but what is life without trials and tribulations? When you get down on yourself and feel as though it is too much, which is inevitable, no matter how strong you are. Remember, these things are meant to help you grow and become a better person. You remember that, and you can get through anything.
This world and this country have never been in our favor. It seems like it’s only getting worse. All I can ask is that you please be careful. I’m not telling you not to be yourself. I am not telling you not to stand up for yourself. What I am telling you is that there is a time and place for everything. There are certain precautions you need to take being a person of color. Everyone may not understand why, maybe even you, and that’s ok. Be careful and stay alive.
My sweet love, one thing I always want you to remember is that I love you and I will always be here for you. If you ever need anything or even just want someone to talk to, all you have to do is look over your shoulder, and I’ll be right there. Not literally because I know you just turned around to check. You are my world. I want you to achieve all of your goals and chase all of your dreams. The things you truly want in life are not given to you; they are earned. You wouldn’t be any good to anybody if you didn’t do what you love. Work hard, play hard, love hard, and live, not just survive.
