This was my first crime scene, not my first time seeing a body and I hope it won’t be my last. My life changed once I got this job, I wasn’t able to sleep through the night without having a nightmare about the body I had to cover with that white sheet. The nightmares went something like this, I would be in an interrogation room with the dead person, they would tell me details about their deaths that only they would know. I would try to ask more but when I would, I would wake up with the moon glistening on my forehead from the sweat. This had been going on since the most brutal murder I had ever seen, usually I don’t get sick from dead bodies but this time I couldn’t sleep for days I had to find out who had murdered this person. When I would sleep after this case months later I would get nightmares of other victims with this particular body standing in the corner shaking their head yes. I went to tell the chief about the thoughts I’ve been having without telling him about the nightmares he gave me the file, damnit, it was a Jane Doe. This challenge was worth it so I can finally sleep well at night.

I started with going to the morgue so I can get the body, there wasn’t much body to have nothing but hands, eyes and the left side of the brain. What had the person been thinking when leaving nothing but this and a blood trail. I had sent them all to the lab to be tested. Of course this wouldn’t be easy; they were all labeled as me. What would I do knowing this without having anything to start with anymore. My day is over. I should start tomorrow morning. My nightmares had come back, this time with Jane Doe, my first nightmare with her. She didn’t have a mouth, there was nothing but her arms and eyes and half a brain. There was flashing of lights behind her blinking in a pattern I had typed, -.-. .... . -.-. -.- / ..- -. -.. . .-. / - .... . / -... .-. .. -.. --. into my computer and got the message to look under the bridge. At the time I lived near a bridge, in fact it was right outside my window. I went to the bridge and checked under it, next thing I knew I had gotten stabbed in my side and fell over bleeding out.

When my vision had started to blur I saw a man’s two leather boots moving towards my stomach. I felt another stabbing pain and then I fell into a slumber. Another nightmare, I heard nothing but manic laughter and screeching of my name. I woke up with lowlights covering my body as if I was in a museum. I moved to my turn onto my back and saw Jane Doe in front of me. I could finally hear her voice, she sounded like my birth mother. Although I haven’t seen her since I was nine it sounded sweet as apple pie. Once the doctor came into the room she vanished, he saw the look in my eye and knew something was wrong. He left the room and once again Jane Doe is back seeming like a stronger vision than before. She’s walking towards me. I couldn't get away from her, then the doctor came back into the room but she did not vanish this time. I started to scream for anyone for the chief but nobody came but four nurses holding restraints and a needle. I woke up again inside of a different hospital. I had to get home and go back to searching, my wrist and ankles were restrained. I attempted to pull against them but couldn’t get far. It made my limbs under the restraints red like fire. I gnawed at my restraints until they were weak enough for me to rip through them. I jumped out the window and let my body float down to the ground landing in a puddle of water. I ran back to the police station and tested my own fingerprints, I didn’t care anymore, I tested my own eye matter so I can 100% make sure that it’s my mother.

It’s her, Jane Doe is my mother. My birth mother is dead, at least I'm the one who found out  instead of someone else.  I wish I could find out a different way but this way I know she’s at peace. After this I left the force, but before I put my two weeks in I had taken off of work to get a full day's rest. When I had closed my eyes the nightmare had started, but this time it was something different. I saw my mother, the way I remember her, her long flowing hair there were beads at the end of them in my favorite color. She was smiling at me like I’ve never seen her smile before. I could feel her happiness. My eyes slightly opened, the dream was over. I could finally hear the birds singing and the sunshine in my eyes. I was home and my mother was home.
