Chapter One: The Precious Value of a Girl
Scene one ✨
( A small village home. Claire sits on a wooden bench, her schoolbooks on her lap. She looks worried as her mother, Mrs Thomas prepares dinner.)
*Claire* : (sighs) Mom, can I ask you something?
Mrs Thomas : Of course, my daughter. What is troubling you?
Claire: Uncle Michael told me today that girls don't need school. He said it's a waste of money and time because we will end up in the kitchen anyway.
Mrs Thomas : (pauses, then smiles gently) Ah, your Uncle still holds on to old ways of thinking. My daughter do you believe what he said?
Claire : (hesitant) I don't want to, but sometimes I feel like he's right. Some of my friends have already stopped going to school. They say they will get married soon. Maybe I should stop too .
Mrs Thomas: (sits beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder) My daughter, listen to me. You were born with a crown on your head. Not a crown of gold or silver, but a crown of possibilities. Every lesson you learn, every book you read, every dream you chase adds jewels to that crown. And until you chase the crown , you can't wear it .
Claire: (curious) A crown? On my head?
Mrs Thomas : Yes. Education makes that crown shine brighter. Without it, life may try to bend you down. But with it, you will overcome it
Claire : But mom , if everyone says girls should only marry and cook, won't I be alone if I keep studying?
Mrs Thomas : (smiling firmly) You may feel alone for a while, but remember - those who walk the path of greatness often begin alone. And when you succeed, others will follow your footsteps.
(At that moment, Miss Grace, Claire teacher, walk in . She overhears the conversation.)
Miss Grace: I couldn't help but hear your words, Mrs Thomas .You are right. Claire, do you know why I became a teacher?
Claire : (shakes her head) Why?
Miss Grace: Because when I was your age, someone told me girls don't need education too. But my mother told me what yours just said - that my education is my crown. Today, I help hundreds of girls wear their crowns with pride.
Claire : (eyes brightening) So… if I keep going to school, I can do something great too?
Miss Grace: Greater than you can imagine, my dear. You can become a teacher, a doctor, a leader, or even change the world in your own way. Education will give you that power.
Mrs Thomas: Remember, my daughter ,when you educate a girl, you educate a generation. Never forget that.
Claire : (smiles, holding her books tightly) Then I will wear my crown proudly, mom. I will not stop learning.
Mrs Thomas: So just erase the thought that female education is worthless and you can't be left alone in this journey. Many will still join you when they see how far you've gone and what you have become.
Claire: thank you mom , thanks for always encouraging me ,I promise to do more and be a better version of myself to show the world that girl child too can make it in life .
Miss Grace : I just came by to tell Claire about an upcoming scholarship from the state government to help the less privilege and I can see your mother is struggling to educate you since you father die . The principal forget to announce it on Friday so he send we the teacher to go round because the form will close this weekend also and I want you to partake in it .( She bring out a paper for Claire to fill) Here is it , fill the form and bring it to my house tomorrow.
Mrs Thomas: thank you very much miss Grace for remembering my family. God will remember you for good
Claire: thank you ma'am , I really appreciate and I promise not to disappoint you and my mom , I will wear the crown of possibilities .
Miss Grace: I bring this opportunity to you just to encourage you to do more , even without money there's scholarship for you . So don't relent and if you have anything that bothers you , don't hesitate to reach out to me , just see me as you role model.
And I pray God will lead you well .
Claire: okay ma'am. thank you .
Miss Grace: I will be on my way now . See you tomorrow.
