The lecture hall was at capacity—more than two hundred people, and another four thousand watching the stream. Students, researchers, health professionals, government observers. There was no press, not yet. It was still being treated as an academic phenomenon.

The talk was titled plainly:

“The Libido Recession: A Multidisciplinary Review”

The speaker, Dr. Reza Malek, stepped up to the podium and cleared his throat.

He didn’t look like a man interested in drama. His hair was silver, swept back neatly, and his expression was clinical, quiet. He wore no tie. Just a grey shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, and a set of slides on the screen behind him.

“I’ll begin by saying that what we’re observing is not local. This isn’t a chemical spill. It’s not a virus. It’s not a new medication. This is happening globally, across age, gender, culture, and geography. A kind of universal deactivation.”

Behind him, a graph appeared—an aggregation of self-reported libido data from multiple global health orgs. It wasn’t subtle. It was a cliff.

“Our working term is Total Libido Collapse. But I prefer ‘recession,’ because it implies a shifting away, not an extinction.”

He paused.

“Though extinction is not entirely out of the question.”

A murmur went through the room.

In the third row, Alex Harper sat with a tablet balanced on her lap, stylus in hand. She wasn't taking notes. She just liked the feeling of pretending to. The air was heavy with a kind of intellectual discomfort—everyone very focused on not panicking.

She scanned the room. No one was whispering. No one was fidgeting. Everyone was calm. Still. Almost too still.

“Let me be clear,” Malek continued. “This is not a hormonal issue.”

The next slide came up—testosterone levels in men, estradiol in women, across thousands of subjects.

“Baseline hormone levels remain within statistical norms. Sperm counts have not dropped. Ovarian function is intact. Erections are rare, but medically inducible. The hardware is fine.”

Another pause.

“It’s the software that’s gone.”

He let the words sit.

“There is no measurable sexual desire. Not muted. Not dysfunctional. Just absent. Like a light switch has been flicked off, and no one knows where the wiring leads.”

A slide appeared: a simplified diagram of the hypothalamus, amygdala, prefrontal cortex. Arrows, feedback loops, neuromodulators.

“Even more troubling is the lack of distress. Typically, when libido collapses—whether due to medication, illness, or trauma—patients report a strong emotional reaction. Depression. Anxiety. Loss of identity.”

“This is different.”

“People report the absence... and move on.”

Malek clicked to a photo from an anonymous interview.

A man, forty-two, formerly in a long-term relationship. He’d volunteered for brain imaging.

“He told us, and I quote: ‘I remember wanting my partner. I know I did. But I can’t recall what it felt like. It’s like trying to remember a smell that doesn’t exist anymore.’”

Another subject, thirty-seven, female:

“I feel like I’m supposed to be upset. But I’m not. I’m just... free.”

Alex scribbled that last quote down.

"I’m just... free."

It was the same strange feeling she'd been circling for weeks. A clarity. A quiet.

She didn’t feel sick. She didn’t feel broken. She just felt... different.

Like a radio station that used to buzz in the background had finally gone off-air.

Malek concluded the session with a tone that was both cautious and humbled.

“I’ve studied human sexuality for over twenty years. I have never seen anything like this. We’ve had mass psychogenic illnesses before. But this... this is something else.”

“This is an adjustment. And it doesn’t seem to be going away.”

After the lecture, Alex walked out into the late-July sun. Warm breeze. A few clouds. People moved calmly along the street. No eyes lingering. No sideways glances. No undercurrents.

Just people. Moving forward.

As if nothing had been lost.
