Cassidy saw her mother-in-law Candice take some cash from the safe in the study and shouted, "Get your filthy hands off that. That's my money." Candice looked down. "Sorry, dear," she replied sheepishly. Just then, Cassidy's husband Kieran returned. Immediately, her tone changed.
"Oh, mom," she said sweetly. "I didn't know you needed money. You should have just told me. You know I'll always take care of you." Kieran smiled at this seemingly heartwarming scene, unaware of what was happening behind the scenes.
A few days later, Kieran and Cassidy went on a date in a shopping mall when out of nowhere, Cassidy screamed, "Help, this man hit me and won't let me go." Kieran was appalled.
"What are you talking about?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. The screams attracted the attention of many people. Some started filming. Before Kieran had time to process what had transpired, 2 police officers rushed over and took him away.
Weeks passed. Kieran sat silently in court while Cassidy let out a devilish smile as if she had already won.
"Your Honour," she said sweetly. "My husband mistreated me. I deserve 50% of his fortune." The judge nodded and said, "As per the law, the wife will get 50% of her husband's assets." Hearing this, Cassidy smiled wider. Kieran, however, did not say anything in his defence.
"You'll receive a total of $5," the judge continued. Cassidy froze.
"Wait. What?" she asked, unable to believe what she had just heard.
"Yes, $5. Your husband's total assets are only $10. Everything else legally belongs to his mother," the judge replied. Just then, Kieran broke the silence.
"I always transferred everything I ever earned to my mother. She raised me with love and sacrifice. Every cent I earned belongs to her," he said. Then he pulled out a USB drive and asked for it to be played in court. The judge agreed. To everyone's shock, it showed Cassidy stealing from Candice's safe. Just then, a voice rang out in court. It was a security guard from the same shopping mall which Kieran and Cassidy were at weeks earlier.
"Your Honour, I also have CCTV footage of the shopping mall on the day in question. I would like to request for the tape to be played in court," the security guard said. The judge agreed. The audience gasped as it showed that Kieran had done nothing, in contrary to Cassidy's claim that he had abused her. Whispers echoed around the courtroom. The judge banged his gavel for silence.
"I have carefully examined all evidence presented, and I am convinced that the plaintiff is a cold, calculating individual who would go as far to frame the defendant for abuse for money. I hereby find the defendant not guilty, and he is free to go. As for the plaintiff, you will be sent to jail for processing," he announced. Upon realising the gravity of the situation, Cassidy panicked.
"Honey, please don't let them take me. We're husband and wife, remember?" she pleaded, lookong in Kieran's direction. However, he was not buying it.
"Are you kidding me?" he asked, disgusted. "You just called me a wife abuser. You expect me to do your bidding after what you did to me and my mother?"
"Please," Cassidy pleaded. "I don't want the $5 any longer. Just drop the charges, and we'll work things out." Kieran, however, ignored her pleas and asked for the court officers to take her away.
"You'll regret this," she threatened.
"Dear ex-wife," Kieran replied while looking at his ex-wife from head to toe. "If you have that much time to threaten me, I suggest you find a defence lawyer instead, because you'll be looking at a real prison sentence. I'll see to that." With that, he walked out of the courtroom with Candice, leaving Cassidy screaming as she was dragged away by court officers to face legal consequences.
