Fourteen-year-old Lily had always been a headstrong girl. Every piece of advice her mother, Sarah, offered was met with an eye roll or a dismissive wave. "Lily, remember to wear your seat-belt," Sarah would say. "Whatever, Mom," Lily would reply, already plugging in her earphones.
One morning, Lily woke up to find her mother gone. The house was eerily quiet, and no matter where she looked, Sarah was nowhere to be found. Panic set in as Lily realized she was truly alone.
As she sat in her mother's room, clutching a framed photo, a strange voice echoed through the house: "To find your way back, you must remember and follow. Only then will you see."
Confused and scared, Lily began to recall all the things her mother had told her over the years – advice she had stubbornly ignored. She started with the basics: making her bed, eating a healthy breakfast, and wearing weather-appropriate clothing.
As she followed each remembered instruction, the world around her seemed to shimmer and change. The voice returned, urging her to continue. Lily delved deeper into her memories, recalling more significant lessons her mother had tried to impart.
"Be kind to others," Sarah's voice echoed in her mind. Lily helped an elderly neighbor with groceries.
"Study hard and do your best," came another memory. Lily spent hours catching up on schoolwork she had neglected.
"Always tell the truth, even when it's hard," Sarah had once said. Lily confessed to her best friend about a small lie she had told months ago.
With each action, the world around Lily became hazier, as if she were moving through a dream. The voice grew stronger, more familiar. It was her mother's voice.
"Remember, Lily," it said, "I love you more than anything. Stay strong."
Suddenly, Lily felt a jolt. The world around her dissolved, and she found herself gasping for air, surrounded by white walls and the steady beep of machines. Her mother's tear-stained face came into focus above her.
"Lily! Oh, thank God!" Sarah cried, embracing her daughter.
As the fog in her mind cleared, Lily learned the truth. She and her mother had been in a terrible car accident, their vehicle plunging into the ocean. Sarah had managed to save them both, but Lily had been in a coma for weeks.
During her coma, Lily's mind had created a world where she had to remember and follow her mother's advice to find her way back. The experience had been her subconscious working through the accident and her relationship with her mother.
As she recovered in the hospital, Lily looked at her mother with new eyes. "Mom," she said softly, "I'm sorry I never listened before. But I hear you now. I really hear you."
Sarah smiled through her tears, holding her daughter's hand. "It's okay, sweetheart. We have all the time in the world now."
From that day forward, Lily approached life with a new perspective. She cherished her mother's wisdom and love, understanding that sometimes, the most important lessons are the ones we learn to hear.
