Chapter 1: The Awakening
Ren stood at the edge of the cliff, the wind whipping through his dark hair as he gazed at the sprawling forest below. The village was quiet today, its usual bustle replaced by an eerie stillness. Even the birds seemed to sense that something was wrong.
His hand instinctively reached for the pendant around his neck—a small, crimson crystal that glowed faintly in the sunlight. It was a gift from his master, the village elder, and a reminder of the legacy he carried as a Dragon Keeper. But lately, that legacy felt more like a burden.
For weeks, Ren had been plagued by strange dreams—visions of fire and scales, and a voice calling out to him from the darkness.
"Awaken, Ren. The time is near."
He shook his head, trying to dispel the haunting words from his mind. It was just a dream, nothing more. Yet, deep down, he knew it was something far more significant.
"Ren!" A voice called from behind him.
Ren turned to see his best friend, Kael, running up the path. The younger boy was breathless, his eyes wide with excitement and fear.
"What's wrong?" Ren asked, sensing the urgency.
"There's... something happening in the forest. The elders said it’s nothing, but I heard them whispering. They’re scared, Ren."
Ren's heart skipped a beat. The elders rarely showed fear. If they were worried, then something serious was happening.
"Lead the way," Ren said, determination setting in.
The two of them raced through the forest, the trees blurring past. Ren’s mind raced along with his feet. Could it be connected to the dreams? Was the voice in his head a warning?
They reached the clearing where the disturbance had been reported. Ren slowed as they approached, his instincts on high alert. The air here felt different—charged with an energy that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up.
And then he saw it.
In the center of the clearing, a dark, swirling portal had opened, crackling with ominous energy. Ren could feel the malevolent power emanating from it, and in the midst of it stood a figure—a tall man clad in black armor, his eyes glowing with a sinister light.
"Obsidian Night," Ren whispered, recognizing the symbol on the man’s armor. This was no ordinary enemy.
Before Ren could react, the man raised his hand, and a shockwave of energy exploded from the portal, knocking Ren and Kael to the ground. Ren struggled to get back on his feet, but the force was overwhelming.
"Ren!" Kael shouted, but his voice seemed distant, drowned out by the roar of power.
The man in black armor stepped forward, his gaze fixed on Ren. "So, you are the one," he said, his voice cold and calculating. "The Dragon Keeper of Crimaxius."
Ren’s eyes widened. How did this man know about Crimaxius? Even Ren didn’t fully understand his connection to the crimson dragon. But there was no time to ponder the question.
The man raised his hand again, and this time, the portal began to pulse with a dark light. Ren could feel it—something was trying to break free from the other side.
Desperation surged through him. He had to stop this.
Ren clenched his fists, feeling the familiar warmth of his dragon power ignite within him. The crimson crystal around his neck glowed brighter, responding to his will. He focused all his energy, channeling it into a single strike.
"Crimson Strike!" Ren shouted, releasing a powerful wave of energy towards the portal.
The blast collided with the dark energy, and for a moment, it seemed like he might succeed. But then, the portal pulsed again, stronger this time, and Ren's attack was absorbed.
The man in black armor chuckled. "Pathetic. You haven't even begun to tap into your true power."
Ren fell to one knee, panting. He could feel his strength waning. Was this really all he could do?
"Awaken, Ren." The voice from his dreams echoed in his mind once more.
And then, he felt it—a surge of power, far greater than anything he had ever experienced before. It was as if a dam had broken inside him, flooding him with energy.
The pendant around his neck shattered, and from the fragments emerged a brilliant crimson light. It spiraled around him, enveloping him in its warmth and strength.
Ren stood, his eyes glowing with a fierce determination. He could feel Crimaxius within him, the dragon’s power coursing through his veins.
"No more holding back," Ren said, his voice steady and strong.
He raised his hand, and this time, the energy that surged forth was unstoppable. It tore through the dark energy, closing the portal with a thunderous crash.
The man in black armor staggered back, his eyes wide with shock. "Impossible...!"
Ren stepped forward, his aura blazing like the sun. "Leave now, or face the wrath of the crimson dragon."
The man hesitated for a moment, then sneered. "This isn't over, Dragon Keeper. We will meet again."
With that, he vanished into the shadows, leaving Ren and Kael alone in the clearing.
Ren collapsed to the ground, exhausted but triumphant. He could still feel the dragon's power within him, but now, it felt different—more controlled, more a part of him.
"Ren, that was incredible!" Kael exclaimed, rushing to his side.
Ren managed a weak smile. "Thanks, but I think we’ve got a lot more to worry about now."
Kael nodded, the weight of the situation sinking in. "Yeah... but at least we know you can handle it."
Ren glanced at the shattered pendant, the fragments glinting in the grass. The voice from his dreams was silent now, but he knew it wouldn't be for long.
The battle was far from over.
