“Broken plans, Unbroken spirit: My Struggle After Resigning to Work Abroad”
by: Lovely Ly
I thought I was boarding a flight to my future. I had resigned from my job, borrowed money I promised myself I would repay, and carried nothing but faith and determination in my heart. My suitcase was heavy with clothes, but heavier still with dreams of building a better life abroad. Yet, in the cold, fluorescent lights of the immigration hall, those dreams collapsed. I was offloaded before I even left the ground. In a single moment, I went from hope to heartbreak, from employed to jobless, from certain to lost.
Scene 1: The Decision
The day I made up my mind to work abroad, I decided to take a loan to fund my flight. I also handed in my resignation letter and I was both terrified and free. My colleagues wished me luck, but none of them knew the sacrifices behind my smile. I had taken out a loan just to fund this chance. To me, it was not debt—it was an investment in my future.
I told myself this was my opportunity to break free from the routine of a low-paying job and step into something greater. I imagined supporting my family, paying back my loan quickly, and building a new life abroad. Every signature, every form, every piece of paperwork felt like a step closer to the dream I had built in my mind.
Scene 2: The journey
When my flight was finally booked, I felt unstoppable. I spent nights picturing what my new life would look like: walking through unfamiliar streets, learning a new culture, and proving to myself—and to everyone else—that the risk I had taken was worth it.
I carried not just a suitcase, but the weight of my family’s expectations and my own silent prayers. At the airport, I told myself this was the moment everything would change. My heart raced with hope as I stood in line for immigration, clutching my passport like it was the key to a new beginning.
Scene 3: The struggle
But reality is not always kind. The officer studied my passport, my flight ticket and my boarding pass longer than usual, asked questions that made me nervous, and finally called another officer over. My chest tightened with every interrogation. Then the words came: I would not be allowed to board. I was being offloaded.
I tried to plead, tried to explain that I was only chasing a better life, but nothing changed. At that moment, the ground beneath me felt like it was collapsing. All I could hear was the echo of my own heartbeat, heavy with disbelief.
I walked out of the airport with the same suitcase I had carried in, but it felt different—like it was filled with shame, fear, and failure. I couldn't stop my tears falling as I rode a taxi to the bus station. Thinking of what happened that night, why I was offloaded, and my dreams of working abroad to have a better job but was denied shattered my heart and soul.
Scene 4: The fall
I returned home with a broken heart, thinking of what my life would be at home. I had no job, no income, and a debt waiting for me like a shadow. My phone stopped ringing with good news; instead, it became a reminder of unpaid bills and unanswered questions. Family and friends asked how my trip went, and I struggled to find words.
Nights grew longer, and the silence around me became heavier. Depression crept in slowly, quietly. I questioned my decisions, my worth, and my future. I had gambled everything, and I had lost
Scene 5: The Reflection
But as the days turned into weeks, weeks into months, I realized something: my plans may have broken, but my spirit did not. I was still here, still breathing, still searching. My journey did not take me across borders that night and it forced me to look within myself. I try to have a positive outlook in life despite what happened and I believe that God got my back.
Failure does not mean the end—it means a new beginning shaped by resilience. My debt remains, my struggles are real, but so is my determination to succeed in life.
I may have been grounded before takeoff, but my spirit still refuses to stay on the ground. I might have been denied once in the immigration to leave my country to have a better life abroad, but this dream is still in my heart. I pray and I believe that God will make a way for me when the time comes.
This story is not about defeat—it is about the strength to rise again, no matter how many times life breaks your plans.
