Douglas was on the bus scouting for easy targets. He hated doing this, but he had no choice. Just then, he spotted a lady who had a handbag hanging loosely over her shoulders. However, there were still other passengers on the bus, which made it difficult for him to strike. Gradually, the other passengers alighted from the bus, and there was only Douglas and the lady left. "Here's my chance," he thought to himself while advancing towards her. He snatched the handbag from her before alighting from the bus. "Wait," the lady called out. "Take this," she said before throwing her mobile phone to him. She also threw out her wedding ring before the doors of the bus closed. Both intrigued and confused by the generosity of the lady, Douglas followed her. He saw her standing at the lake, about to commit suicide. "What do you think you're doing? Come back," Douglas called out as he approached the lady.
"Leave me alone," she shouted angrily. "I'm a thief, not a murderer," Douglas replied, to which the lady heaved a sigh of relief. "How about a deal?" she suggested. "I have some savings at home. You can take them and then...help me out." "Deal," Douglas replied. Worried about what the lady might do in his absence, he pretended he wanted to rob her, and followed her closely as she led him to her house. When they arrived, Douglas was surprised to see the vast mansion. At the study, the lady went to the safe and pressed some numbers. The safe opened, revealing a thick wad of cash. "I'm not used to working when I'm being watched," Douglas said. "Ok, Sir. I'll wait in the kitchen," the lady replied, and went to the kitchen.
When Douglas was alone in the study, he closed the safe without taking the money, determined to find out what happened to the lady. He chanced upon a photograph of her with a man, presumably her husband, and she was visibly pregnant and happy. Just then, the lady's mobile phone rang. The display showed her husband calling. Douglas answered the phone. "Hello?" he said, to which a male voice rasped in the background. "Who are you? Lily's new boyfriend?" the male voice asked. "Huh, dude. Don't waste your time. She can't even have kids. She's so messed up." Douglas gasped in shock as the caller hung up. Everything fell into place. Wasting no time, Douglas rushed to the kitchen, where he saw Lily holding a knife. "You're lying," he said as he took the knife away from her. "There's nothing of value which I can take." "I'm sorry, this is all I had left after the divorce," Lily said apologetically. She then opened up about how her husband left her after she lost her baby during an accident, and how she was subsequently left infertile. She then continued, "So...will you help me?" Douglas felt sorry for Lily as he was in a similar predicament. Sighing, he said, "I will help...but on my terms." Lily agreed.
Douglas brought Lily to his house, which was quite run-down. The house was in a mess. "Do you want me to clean your house?" she asked. "To be honest, it's been a while since I dated," Douglas said sheepishly. "Dinner?" Lily agreed. After they were done cleaning the house, they sat on the sofa, and Douglas opened up about losing his wife to a car accident a year ago. He then introduced her to his young son, Don. When Lily saw him, she gasped. "What kind of example are you giving to the child?" she threw the question at Douglas, who hung his head in shame. "It's tough to climb out of the pit, especially when you're raising a child single-handedly," he said.
Douglas, Lily and Don had a great evening together, where the latter two bonded. Lily decided to postpone her deal with Douglas. "I've promised to take Don to the water park. Hope that's fine with you," she said. Douglas smiled. Determined to save Lily from depression, and wanting to be a good father to Don, he gave himself up to the police, and was subsequently sentenced to a year in jail for snatch theft.
"We didn't agree that way," Lily said angrily when she visited Douglas in jail. "You must fulfill your end of the deal."
"I'm sorry," he said apologetically. "Looks like I can only do so when I am released the following year." He then asked her to become Don's guardian, and she agreed. While Douglas was serving time, Lily took care of Don as promised, which helped her cope with the loss of her family. Eventually, Douglas was granted an early release due to good behaviour, and with Lily's help, he got a job, which helped him put his criminal past behind. He also married Lily, and they, together with Don, finally becone a complete family.
