Growing up as a kid, I've always heard mysterious tales about ghosts and people who encounters them, Of course the people that tells this tales where not the ones who experienced it but where the ones who heard from another source and the source from another. It was an endless circle of rumors, I had always presumed.
But there was this particular ghost story, it was called madam koi koi or lady koi koi. I've heard this story a zillion times on several occasions, a movie was even made about it and they always have a similar narrative about a dead young lady a teacher or so who is missing one foot of her heels that always makes a sound like koi..koi when she walks. Her backstory always has a different plot to what lead to her death.
Why she still appears to students? nobody knows but many victims of this tale were all boarders as it was commonly observed among boarding schools. Any Nigerian can affirm to this particular tale as it told nationwide, but I was never a believer of such tales.
Going to a boarding school was a flex for me because it meant you were a smart kid, and it was an easy way to escape the stress of house work, don't judge me it wasn't easy being the first born lol. My joy knew no bound when I cleared my final exams at junior school and got an admission to go to an all girls boarding school. I was so happy to finally leave home for the first time.
Although my first week as a boarder was short of what I expected but I was happy for what it's worth, I made few friends and had adapted to the living conditions of the school, in space of a year I had heard a lot of ghost stories and always waved it off as rumors, untill my second year in school...
We always had a mandatory night prep which starts 7pm and ends 10pm, on that particular day my friends and I packed our books in a bag and flashlight in our hands, unfortunately the light bulbs in our class were dead and hadn't been replaced yet so we make use of flashlights when studying, we raced ourselves to class and started lecture.
I don't know the particular time I slept off, but I remember feeling drowsy around 9:47pm, and my friends decided to pull a devilish prank on me, it was a very common prank among students to teach people who falls asleep during prep a vital lesson, you would be left alone in class and when it was day break, you would become a laughing stock for the day.
I was awaken with a loud bang at a desk close by and for a moment I didn't know where I was due to the sudden quietness (it was already lights-out) I was shocked that my friends could pull this stunt on me and scared at the same time, I felt a chill like I someone was staring at me and as I hurriedly stood up and turned to pick my torchlight from my desk someone beamed theirs on my face from outside the classroom, I heaved a sigh of relief thinking it was probably a security on patrol or a teacher.
“what are you still doing here" said a feminine voice still beaming the torchlight in my face
"Good evening Ma, I slept off while..."
"Now run to your hostel" said the firm teacher cutting me short, walking downwards probably to check the next class or something it was a quiet night and the sounds of her shoes could be heard miles away
"Who wears high heels at night" I said rolling my eyes and picking up my flashlight, but there was something strange about the way she walked I had observed leaping on one heel as if injured or missing the other shoe, concerned I stepped out of my class seeing her figure still leaping down the hallway
"Is everything okay Ma'am? I called but got no reply as she kept leaping, I pointed my flashlight at her and was shock as I saw no one there it was as if she had vanished into thin air. I screamed and took to my heels immediately, tripping down several times on my way to the dorm, I didn't stop nor look back even when I heard the night patrols calling me to.
It wasn't till I got to the hostel door I stopped, banging on the door for them to let me in frantically, the night patrols finally got to me holding tight on my wrist and telling me to calm down and state where I was coming from but I ignored them still yelling at the top of my lungs for them to let me in. Finally our hostel's mistress came out, a handful of students also came out as I had been making a lot of noise, she then told the patrol men to let go of me as she held my hands gently telling them she would address the issue tomorrow and that it was probably another victim of the night prep prank, as night patrols left and the crowd dispersed I was told to go lay down.
When I got to my bunk I saw my friends staring at me apologetically but I was too emotional to forgive nor cast a look at them, as I laid on my bed I stared at the clock which read 4:02am, I managed to close my eyes but the event kept replaying on my mind. The next day the news about the scared crazy girl who almost took down the hostel gate had circulated around the school, I was called to the principal's office with my hostel's mistress present, where I narrated my ordeal but she, an unbeliever of such waved it off as my mind playing tricks on me out of fear and asked me to take some weeks off which I gladly did and never came back, my mom who understood my plight enrolled me in a day school instead.
I never told anyone else except my family because they might think I'm crazy,
I'm still haunted by the event, I mean who wouldn't be?
It's an Unforgettable Tale.
