I was still very young when I saw the world harsh to me. Every moment that passed seemed like the end me of because nothing around me ever seemed good though I was alive inside me I was dead.
My life was filled with sorrows untold, but you should be wondering what happened to me. Let me now tell you.
I was born in a small town of Nama Kwekwe where life is so hard because it was an urban place filled with all evils of urban places. A place where young children spent the nights on the streets because of irresponsible parents who spent their time in bars drinking alcohol while others thought of committing robbery to earn a living, fraud and witchcraft.
I am the first born of my parents who was conceived out of a young love relationship though giving birth to me was the last thing they ever expected therefore I was a mistake with caused them to break up. since then, I become the boundary between them because my dad was not ready to take responsibility. my mom tried to abort but since aborting is illegal in my country the illegal weak abortion methods she tried to use didn't work out instead it was her health at risk that she almost died therefore she had no choice but keep me and knowing this first truth of my unwanted existence broke me emotionally and to make matters worse I was told that at a young age and it became part of me of a daily routine story I grew up hearing till today that am all grown up.
every moment of my life was about wishing I never existed as they had wished. reason being my existence was burden because they were all still young teenagers who barely knew anything about family, my dad was not ready, and mom was vulnerable because back home she had become a disgrace and therefore she was abandoned. she had to begin working on people's farms to get what to eat as my father went out to party with friends since my mom's pregnancy didn't affect him and none of his family members knew about me or my mom all they knew is that they had an obedient son who was at school studying.
so, my mom carried all the responsibility of taking care of herself plus the unborn me and also prepare for birth, yet she had no shelter, a job or anyone to help her. She struggled until she got a job at a certain farm where she had to share shelter with animals and she only had one meal a day and she earned very little that she had to save in preparation of giving birth, medication and medical bills.
my mom had no choice but to work extra that on top of working on the farm she resorted to collecting plastics in the late evening that she would later sold in order to earn some more extra money, at this time she had lost a lot of weight was so peel because she didn't have enough to take of herself but as months went on, she was taken in by one merciful woman due to her hard work that she noticed and she was called katami who took her and gave shelter and asked her to be her house maid and that was around her seventh month of pregnancy but by God's grace she was able to work as required and when the time for giving birth arrived she was helped her kind boss to reach hospital and had a safe delivery.
using the little savings, she had she was able to buy some basic needs she needed to take care of me as she continued working as a house maid. she endured all the loneliness and hardships without my father by her side and still made it through life by hard work and tolerance of all bad, unhuman and unjust full treatment she went through cause she knew that all I had was her and she had only one person who was me and since I was still Un infant she had to take care of me to ensure that I grow up as a healthy child.
as soon as I made one year old, she had saved up some money that was just enough to rent a small semi-permanent mud house that we lived in but at same time operated as her small vegetable stall. She had also resulted to washing people's clothes, cleaning their homes and cook at construction sites to earn a little more and the vegetable stall always operated in the evening. she always carried me on her back and went with me wherever she went to work.
as time passed by, I had to start school, and she enrolled me in a government school because it was cheap. but that did not stop the hard life her working from door to door since what she always earned was very little with excuses from those she worked for that that was unskilled Laboure that was worth little pay though it was tiresome. she still never gave up she endured for me because never wanted history to repeat itself nor did she want me to suffer like all the other kinds on the streets.
as soon as I turned seven, I was already well trained to do house hold chores therefore during weekend and public holidays I always went with mom to do labor in people's homes with household chores in order to save some time to go and work in more homes and come back to operate the stall late in the evening which I often did even during school days after school.
for all these years I had never seen my father or heard his voice my mom always said I looked like him. as I went to school and saw other children get dropped off to school by their fathers but as for me, I trailed to school kicking stones talking to myself imagining I was with my dad or even my mom, but she could not walk me to school since she had to go start look for work so early in the morning. I was always bulled in school for being an orphan which I wasn't by my fellow pupils' others said I and mom were witches therefore no one would want to stay with us as the Bullings went on, they become something normal to me though it made me feel like I had no right to be loved by anyone else apart from my mom.
I was always protective about my mom that despite the fact that there were people who were also kind but still some people used to hurt us in different styles and I could not bear bad words about mom therefore I always cried every day because even those who would offer help would do it mockingly basing my and my mom's status.
my mom was always there to comfort me and always encouraged me to keep on studying and she always said do it for me my daughter and pass that is the only kind treatment I can receive in this life and the other is to see you prosper therefore those statements always made me work hard to pass with good grades which always surprised my teachers that I could outstand some children who always acquired what they wanted in life including extra lessons.
despite the fact that I and my mom were so insignificant in the community we lived in, me as a person I was an extrovert and I was often so talkative and that eased life for me when the chance blew my way. one time as we were at school we received some visitors from the ministry of education who had come for inspection of how the school was teaching the pupils but this time they didn't want the pupil that they had prepared to offer speeches to present instead it was a random pick from the pupils to tell them anything they felt like as they kept on point out pupils to say something most of them kept on shy off but as I was in my own world talking to stones as usually I was sited at the back of the crowd, I was pointed at since teachers knew I wasn't paying attention they feared more embracement and tried to divert the visitors choice but one the men wasn't ready to change his mind until he heard from me.
with a lot of attention from the other guests to hear what I would say and my classmates who ready to laugh at me silently listened and watched. Mr. wandeka the man who had insisted earlier politely asked me what I was doing sited down talking to assembled stones yet everyone one was standing ready to listen to them. my mom always told me that once am in wrong I should always apologies very first I greeted him formally and apologized for sitting down and without choice I had to tell him exactly what I was doing. I told him that I was talking to the stones that represented my workers, and I was giving them instructions on how to do the tasks I assigned them. the response was funny but my boldness, good English ancient and confidence pleased him and the other guests, and he said unlike the others, I wasn't shy but instead I boldly spoke and immediately he instructed my teachers to prepare me for the incoming inter school debates of the region with a few other pupils. me who was always least considered for such activities here a day came when I got one which was unquestionable, and I was supper exited and quickly thanked the man.
back home I told my mom everything she was happy for me. she told me that she had a Suprise for me but only if I did well in the debate competition. Which I promised to archive for her. Since it was the first time, she told me she had a Suprise for me.
