Kiki wasn't like other space creatures. He was a small, bubbly blob of rainbow shimmer from the far-off star, Fizzle-Pop. On Fizzle-Pop, survival was easy: you floated, giggled, and snacked on moonbeams.
One day, Kiki tumbled through a dizzy, colorful hole in the sky and landed with a gentle *plop* right into a muddy puddle next to a very tall, green tree.
"Oh, dear," bubbled Kiki. He tried to float up, as he always did, but the world pressed him down. It was heavy! He wiggled his rainbow body, but he was stuck in the sticky brown mud.
Kiki looked around. Everything here was hard and quiet. On Fizzle-Pop, everything was soft and sang a happy humming song. He felt a little scared. Where were the moonbeams? He was hungry!
He saw a big, red ball rolling nearby. *Ah, food!* Kiki thought. He tried to nibble it, but it just tasted like plastic and dirt. He spat out a little sparkle of surprise.
Then, a tiny person with sunshine-yellow rain boots came walking by. It was a girl named Lily.
Lily stopped and looked down. Her eyes went wide. "Hello, puddle-friend!" she whispered.
Kiki tried to say, "I'm not a puddle-friend, I'm Kiki!" But all that came out was a soft *glug-glug-glug*.
Lily giggled. She reached down and gently scooped Kiki up onto her hand. Kiki felt a tiny bit warmer. Lily wasn't hard like the dirt; she was soft and smelled like sweet grass.
"You look hungry," Lily said, patting Kiki gently. "You can't eat balls, silly! You need Earth-food."
She led Kiki to a bush with small, purple, round things on it. "These are blueberries," Lily explained. She popped one in her own mouth and made a happy *mmm* sound.
Kiki was confused. He tried to touch the berry with his shimmer, hoping to absorb its energy, but it just rolled away. Lily shook her head.
"No, silly," she said. "On Earth, you have to *chew*."
Lily placed a blueberry right next to Kiki's small, clear, bubble mouth. Kiki hesitated. It wasn't a moonbeam. It was sticky and dense. But he was so hungry, and Lily was so kind.
Very carefully, Kiki tried the chewing motion he saw Lily make. The blueberry burst! It was a tiny explosion of sweet, yummy juice! Kiki let out a happy, silent *pop!* His rainbow shimmer brightened instantly.
Lily clapped her hands. "You did it! You ate a berry!"
Kiki still didn't know how to float or how to find the star hum, but he knew two things: Earth was heavy, and chewing blueberries was wonderful.
And best of all, he knew a tiny, kind person with yellow boots who knew the rules of this strange, quiet planet. Kiki wiggled happily on Lily’s hand, ready to learn the next thing about surviving on Earth.
