The Dilemma #6
This has a great mix of frontier mystery and rough, funny everyday life. Kenny’s chase after the stolen buckskin is genuinely satisfying, especially the moment he realizes the horse tracks were a decoy—though Robert’s sneering “prove it” is maddening. Then the story shifts into the Berger house, Ted’s furious message-roll, and Robby’s revolting soup experiment, which made the whole thing feel lived-in and unexpectedly funny. The mouse standing on the narrator’s hand is a perfect final touch: nobody panics, they just go back to sleep because there’s sheep to find in the morning. The voice keeps the long ride moving.

The worn Native American trail across solid granite stayed with me—it makes deep time feel suddenly visible. I also loved the uneasy final question about whether Robby was exploring or casing the mountain.
