Money Or Your Soul

A very professionally written story. The characters are well developed, even if they are the usual bunch of screw-ups (there’s still a real shortage of genuinely smart protagonists in horror stories). The only thing is, the witch’s spirit is a bit hard to make out... Then again, who can ever understand evil spirits?

This hooked me with how quickly Sam’s ordinary weekend turns into a moral and supernatural nightmare. His guilt over Sarah feels painfully human, especially because getting her back initially seems like the one thing that might heal him. I liked the gradual shift from relief to greed and then to genuine terror once the app reveals that every wish has a price. The final reveal—that Sarah was never meant to return and that the entity wants a body—gives the story a strong dark-fantasy/horror punch. Sam’s panic becomes especially effective because his selfish choices have put the person he loves in danger. The ending cuts off at a great moment of suspense, though I was left wanting the next beat after the doorbell. A little tightening of the prose and dialogue would make the tension even sharper, but the central idea is compelling and emotionally engaging.

Liked the atmosphere you've painted here. I can identify with the protagonist as someone who despises his "day job". The relationships he has intrigued me as well. Very well done, overall!

The story is told simply, almost matter-of-factly, and that gives it a convincing sense of reality. It also serves as another reminder that when confronted with something unknown and incomprehensible to a non-specialist, it is better not to rush in headfirst.

For people who are afraid of heights (like me, for example), this is an especially impressive story.
