Tangled Love
Danza is the strongest part of this opening. Her loneliness feels complicated rather than simple: she is powerful, perceptive, and capable of giving everyone else a safe place, yet she has been emotionally abandoned by the one person she wanted beside her. I especially liked the contrast between her shadow-sovereignty and the way she turns toward fields, trees, sunlight, and rain to keep herself from being consumed by darkness. The image of her as “a warrior who had been benched” captures that particular hurt very clearly. The chapter leans heavily into poetic explanation, and some of the repeated descriptions of her isolation make the pacing feel more like a character prologue than an unfolding scene. Still, the broken boundary and promised scroll create an appealing sense of romantic possibility, and I’m interested in seeing whether the new connection will truly meet Danza as an equal rather than simply become another source of longing.
