THE MEANING OF DINOSAURS

A fossil reptile of the Mesozoic era, in many species reaching an enormous size. Dinosaurs are archosaurs, a larger group of reptiles that first appeared about 251 million years ago, near the start of the Triassic Period. Dinosaurs lived on all of the continents. During the 165 million years of dinosaur existence, this supercontinent slowly broke apart. Its pieces then spread across the globe into a nearly modern arrangement by a process called plate tectonics. The Earth had heavy vegetation near coasts, lakes, and rivers, but desert in its interior. During the Jurassic Period, the continents gradually broke apart. The world was warm, moist, and full of green plants. During the Cretaceous Period, most of the continents had separated.
