An excellent short novella that, given the current state of AI technology, hardly feels like science fiction anymore. It reads more like stark realism, with a toughness that reminded me of Hemingway or Kesey. What struck me most is that this is really a story of two tragedies. The author brilliantly shows how, in order to avoid being seen as "the weird kid's friend," the girl casually destroyed the best part of herself.
