Survival
Janki’s losses are heartbreaking, especially the hospital scenes with her grandparents and the detail of her grandfather trying to communicate before he dies. The story’s sequence makes her isolation feel cumulative: first her childhood, then the compromises with Jatin, and finally the loss of the two people who gave her direction. I was left wondering, though, whether her final realization is meant to be a hard-won form of survival or simply emotional withdrawal. After so much grief, the sudden list of life rules feels more like a conclusion stated to the reader than a change we get to witness in Janki. Her emptiness, and the distance between her and Jatin, stayed with me most.
