The progression pulled me along most strongly from the harmless reconnection to the increasingly risky private messages, then to Nick’s impulsive late-night drive. That meeting works because the story has already established both their caution and their growing anticipation, so “They had tested the distance” feels earned. The later movement into Nick’s memories gives the relationship more context, especially his realization that they are finally meeting the people they became. I was ready for Isabella’s promised story to deepen that balance, though Chapter 9 repeats the ending of Chapter 7 instead of giving her turn, leaving the emotional progression paused just as it seems ready to open up.
