This hooked me with the strange, abrasive friendship between Scott and Sara, and I gradually grew invested in Scott’s desperate need to matter to his son. Clarence’s bizarre “solution” is darkly comic, even when it becomes genuinely frightening. The ending left me conflicted: Scott finds purpose, but through such a morally twisted path that the relief never feels entirely clean. Still, the barroom characters and their rough affection stayed with me.
