Trailer Trash
To be honest, I didn’t really understand the character’s drama or why he needed some kind of shock to finally stop drinking himself into oblivion. What’s wrong with him? What’s stopping him from realizing his potential? He’s a strange sort of guy, although he is well written.

George’s voice hooked me right away—lazy, funny, self-aware, and somehow still capable of surprising kindness. The scene with Lucy is the best part: the ice wrapped in a towel, the cigarette, and her oddly personal lecture make the whole encounter feel intimate and unsettling. The reveal with Troy is a fun turn, though it arrives so quickly that I wanted a little more time with Lucy and a stronger sense of what George might do next. Still, “Trailer Trash” has a memorable narrator and a nicely strange final beat.

Varsity Vampires
I liked how the opening immediately tells us Jacob is awaiting execution, then makes us work backward through the bizarre chain that brought him there. The blood-type allergy is a funny, memorable complication, but it also gives his first feeding a grim inevitability: he is told to be careful, tests the victim, and still cannot stop himself. That made his later insistence that he is “not a killer” feel increasingly hollow in an interesting way. The story’s dark comedy is strongest when vampire rules collide with ordinary college life, especially the doctor treating vampirism like a routine medical condition. I did sometimes feel the many explanations slowed the movement, but the final return to the death-row setup gave the whole chain a satisfying, bleak shape.

Vampires are one of the oldest and most familiar themes in fiction, so it's hard to imagine finding a genuinely fresh angle. Yet that's exactly what the author accomplishes by reimagining the concept as a true crime story, complete with all the genre's classic hallmarks.
