Without waiting for an answer, he pushed past them into the cottage. “Mabel!” he called out, voice cracking. “Mabel, it’s me! I’m back!”

He ran into the kitchen, the old living room, the hallway—everything was older, dustier, changed.

“Mabel!”

The woman followed gently. “Please, listen—”

“No!” Aaron’s voice trembled. “She was just here. I promised I’d come back before supper. She said she’d wait—”

“She did wait,” the woman whispered. “For many, many years.”

Edgar placed a hand on Aaron’s shoulder. “Come. Sit down. There’s something we need to show you.”

They led him to the fireplace. The same hearth where he and Mabel once listened to stories. The warmth didn’t reach him.

The woman placed a worn photo album in his lap. Her hands lingered.

“She never stopped hoping,” she said. “Every evening, she’d sit at the edge of the woods. Said one day, you’d come walking back out.”

Aaron flipped through the pages. Photos of Mabel—older, solemn, beautiful. Sitting beneath the trees. Holding a picture of a boy.

“She waited,” the woman said again.

Aaron’s hand trembled as he touched the photo.
