Sister Marlita loved being seen.

Every Sunday at Fellowship of Hope Church, she made sure she sat in the front row with her bright hats, sparkling jewelry, and loud opinions. If someone sang better than her in the choir, she found fault with them. If another woman received praise, Lorraine suddenly had a testimony twice as long. She wanted the attention, the applause, and the title of “most faithful member.”

But little by little, something changed inside her.

Marlita stopped praying with sincerity. She no longer listened during sermons about humility or love. She only listened for compliments. When the pastor preached about serving others, she whispered, “People should be serving me after all I’ve done.”

Soon, the joy she once carried disappeared. Her smile became forced, and her words became sharp. Some members began avoiding her because every conversation turned into gossip, jealousy, or self-promotion.

One Wednesday night after Bible study, a few older mothers of the church stayed behind in the sanctuary.

Mother Evelyn looked toward the empty choir stand and sighed. “Marlita has forgotten why we came to Christ in the first place. This ministry was never about us. It has always been about Jesus.”

Instead of criticizing her, they formed a prayer circle.

Night after night, they prayed.

“Lord,” Mother Evelyn whispered, “remove the hardness from her heart.”

“Remind her that ministry is service, not performance,” another prayed.

“Bring her back to Your will.”

Weeks passed.

One Sunday morning, Marlita arrived at church carrying the same beautiful purse and wearing another elegant hat, but inside she felt empty. During worship, the choir began singing about surrendering everything to God. Suddenly the words pierced her heart.

She looked around and realized she had spent years trying to be important while forgetting the One who truly mattered.

Tears rolled down her face.

Before the sermon even began, Marlita slowly walked to the altar. The church grew quiet as she fell to her knees.

“I made it about me,” she cried. “I wanted recognition more than righteousness. I forgot about Jesus.”

Mother Evelyn reached out and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. With no judgment. No embarrassment. Only love as Christ shows us.

The church gathered around her and began to pray.

That day, Marlita didn't return to a position or a spotlight.

She had returned to God.

And from that moment thereafter, people started to notice something different about Marlita. She still served in church, but now she served righteously. She was encouraging to others instead of in competitions with them. Marlita prayed more than she performed.

For the first time in many years, Marlita understood that the greatest place in the church was not the stage—

it was at the feet of Jesus.
