Chapter 1

The night was thick with the scent of damp earth and the hum of the wind whispering through the trees. It was as if the forest itself was alive, watching the footsteps of those who dared enter its depths. The village of Eorath's Hollow stood at the edge of the Varellian Wood, a place that had long been forgotten by time. Few dared to enter the woods, and fewer still spoke of it. But tonight, the group had no choice.

Sera, the leader of the group, adjusted the strap of her backpack and glanced at her team. Her sharp, analytical mind was always a step ahead, but tonight, something felt different. Something in the air made her feel uneasy. The forest - its dense fog, its twisting shadows - felt alive, and it was as though it was pulling them deeper into its dark embrace.

"Are we sure about this?" asked Liam, the quiet and reserved member of the team. Though his name was simple, Liam's intellect was unmatched, and even his usual calm demeanor was shaken by the ominous energy emanating from the forest.

"Are you afraid?" Sera asked, her voice calm but firm.

Liam glanced at her, his eyes narrowing. "I'm not afraid, Sera. But we've been following the wrong trail for days. The ancient text spoke of the Abyssal Choir - creatures that exist only in darkness, drawn to the presence of the seal. They could be listening to us right now. If we are walking into their domain, we need to be ready."

"And we will be," Sera replied, her hand brushing against the dagger at her belt. She had learned long ago that fear was just another weapon in the hands of the unaware. But this... this was something different. Something ancient.

Behind them, Nia - a descendant of an old, lost tribe - turned to look back at the village that was slowly disappearing behind them. "Eorath's Hollow was never meant to be disturbed. The old ones left warnings in the scriptures, buried in sacred texts."

Sera stopped walking, her boots crunching the fallen leaves beneath her. She turned to Nia, her brow furrowing. "What are you saying, Nia? That we're making a mistake?"

She shook her head, her face a mask of grim determination. "We've come this far. But know this: the curse of Vareth, the Keeper of Shadows, never truly left. It merely waited. And now, it has been awakened."

Liam's eyes widened. "Vareth - the one who was said to command the Abyssal Choir? That's? impossible."

"Is it?" Nia's voice dropped to a whisper. "You think the Valkir were mere legends? That the Korrath Wraiths were just the stuff of nightmares?"

Sera felt a shiver run down her spine. She had heard the names before, but to hear them spoken aloud in the hushed, heavy air of the forest made them seem all too real. The Valkir, demonic beings who thrived on fear and fed on human souls. The Korrath Wraiths, cursed spirits condemned to wander forever, their souls bound to the forest, forever searching for a way to break their chains.

"We need to find the Seal of the Forgotten One before the Abyss awakens completely," Sera said, her voice steady despite the terror gnawing at her insides. "The temple's location isn't far from here. If we get there before the creatures do, we might be able to stop whatever Vareth has planned."

The wind picked up, howling through the trees like a warning, and Sera heard a faint sound - almost like music - drifting through the forest. The eerie tune seemed to twist through the branches, following them like a shadow. It was an unsettling melody, one that Sera couldn't place but felt deep within her bones.

"The Abyssal Choir," Nia muttered. "It's begun."

The group quickened their pace, but as they moved deeper into the woods, the atmosphere grew heavier. The trees, towering and twisted, seemed to close in on them, their branches thick with moss and shadows. The air grew colder, and Sera could see her breath in front of her, though the night was not yet fully settled.

Suddenly, a low growl echoed from the darkness.

"What was that?" Liam asked, his eyes scanning the surroundings, his hand on the hilt of his sword.

Sera held up a hand, signaling for them to stop. The sound had come from somewhere deeper in the woods, and it was not an animal. Whatever it was, it wasn't natural.

The growl echoed again, followed by a distant, eerie laugh - low and mocking, like something waiting to pounce.

"Stay close," Sera whispered. "This isn't a game anymore. Whatever those creatures are, they can sense us. We need to get to the temple now."

The group moved swiftly through the forest, trying to put distance between themselves and the unnatural sounds. But the fog thickened with every step, and the oppressive silence that followed each growl was even more unnerving.

As they reached the heart of the forest, Sera's mind raced. The legends she had read about were coming true, but she never thought it would feel this real, this close. There were forces at work here that were beyond her understanding.

"Look!" Nia said suddenly, pointing ahead. "There - through the trees. I can see something."

Sera's heart skipped a beat. There, in the distance, barely visible in the fog, was the outline of a structure - ruins of an ancient temple, covered in creeping vines and dark moss. The Seal of the Forgotten One.

The ground trembled beneath their feet, and the growling from the woods grew louder, closer. The Abyssal Choir was coming for them.

"We're not alone anymore," Liam said, his voice filled with a mixture of fear and awe.

The air around them thickened with an unnatural pressure, and the trees began to sway violently, though there was no wind. The fog thickened, swirling around them as if the forest itself was alive. Then, a figure stepped from the mist.

It was tall, shrouded in a tattered cloak that seemed to blend with the fog. Its face was hidden, but the shadow it cast was like an oppressive weight.

"I am Kaelgar," the figure spoke, its voice a rasping whisper that seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. "The keeper of the Abyss. You have disturbed the peace of the Varellian Wood, and now you will face the consequences."

The ground shook again, and the figure extended a skeletal hand toward them.

Sera's heart pounded in her chest as she fought to keep her footing. This was no ordinary man. This was a creature of legend. One of the Korrath Wraiths, cursed to guard the secrets of the Abyss.

"We need to move. Now!" Sera shouted, pushing Nia and Liam ahead of her. But as they turned to run, the mist closed in around them, cutting off any escape.

Kaelgar's laugh echoed in the distance, filling the forest with the sound of impending doom.
