Chapter One: Under the Silent Sky
The night had always been my confidant.
When the world grew too loud, when my thoughts twisted into a thousand restless threads, I would look up. The sky above my little town wasn't the clearest, but on certain nights the stars managed to break through the haze. They never failed to remind me how small I was - how fleeting, how fragile. And yet, somehow, that was where I felt safest.
That night, I found myself walking past midnight, barefoot on the cool tiles of my balcony. The streets below had long gone quiet, the hum of life replaced by the occasional bark of a stray dog, or the rustle of trees shifting in the wind. I tilted my head upward, to the great canvas of darkness that held more secrets than I could ever ask.
"Universe," I whispered, my voice thin and trembling. "May I ask you something?"
The question lingered in the air, like smoke refusing to fade. I felt foolish speaking to the stars, but also desperate. My chest had carried the weight for too long, and no human ear seemed capable of understanding it.
"Why would you entrust me with such a vast feeling," I asked again, "for someone I can never have? For someone I can never be with?"
There was no answer, of course. Only silence - the kind that seemed to stretch endlessly, swallowing every doubt, every hope.
His face rose in my mind without invitation. The curve of his smile, the warmth in his eyes, the way his voice could calm storms I didn't know I carried. I closed my eyes, and for a moment I could almost pretend he was near, leaning over the balcony with me, our shoulders brushing. But the truth cut sharper than any dream: he was not mine. He was never meant to be mine.
And yet… the feeling didn't care.
It bloomed anyway. Wild, uncontainable, unstoppable. A fire that burned through every part of me, leaving ash where certainty used to be.
I pressed my palm against my chest, as if I could quiet the heart that betrayed me every time it quickened at the thought of him.
"If you knew," I whispered again to the stars, "that he was not mine to keep, why give me this heart at all? Why let me drown in something I was never meant to swim in?"
The sky blinked with scattered light. The wind curled around me like a careful hand. For the briefest second, it felt as though the universe was listening - not to answer, but to hold me in my breaking.
Perhaps that was its cruel kindness.
I don't remember how long I stood there. Minutes, hours, I couldn't tell. My body felt heavy, but my mind refused to rest. Every memory of him replayed in fragments - his laughter echoing in a crowded hallway, his hand brushing mine accidentally, his eyes softening in a way that always made me believe, just for a heartbeat, that maybe… maybe he felt it too.
But then reality would crash back. He belonged to someone else. He chose someone else.
The ache twisted deeper.
I laughed bitterly, startling myself. "Love is supposed to be a gift, isn't it?" I muttered. "Then why does it feel like a punishment?"
Silence again. But this time, the silence felt different. Almost expectant. As if the universe was holding back an answer, waiting for me to be ready.
I shook my head, retreating from the balcony. The room behind me was dim, shadows stretching across the walls like old ghosts. On my desk, a journal lay open, its pages crowded with words I hadn't dared speak aloud. Scribbles of longing. Half-finished sentences. Questions with no answers.
I sat down, picking up the pen. My hand trembled, but the words spilled anyway:
If this love is not mine to keep, then what am I supposed to do with it?
The ink bled into the paper, heavy and certain. I stared at the sentence until my vision blurred, until tears gathered and spilled over. I let them. There was no one to see.
Outside, the wind shifted again. A soft thud echoed - a fallen leaf against the window, perhaps, or something more. I looked up, startled, but nothing waited for me in the darkness.
Still, I couldn't shake the strange feeling that the universe had heard me. That somewhere, somehow, the question I had carved into the night sky had found a place to rest.
And maybe - just maybe - the answer was already on its way.
I didn't know then that this night would mark the beginning. That every step after would lead me closer to something I never expected. I only knew the ache, the vastness of a love I couldn't contain, and the silence of the universe that refused to explain why.
But silence, I would learn, was its own kind of answer
