Bad people will come looking for you now, my love, the moment they understand what you are

The last thing I remembered was falling. Not the ordinary kind, where your knees give and the floor comes up too fast. This was quieter than that, and much bigger. I had opened myself to him on purpose, throat bared, blood already moving before his teeth found the vein, and then there had been no Sarah left anywhere to fall from. There had only been him. Every version of him, arriving all at once, until I stopped being able to tell one feeling from the next and simply went under. Then nothing. A long, warm, formless dark. Then, fish. I woke slowly and then all at once, my body finding itself back piece by piece. The room was dark, properly dark, the kind that only comes hours after the sun’s gone, and somewhere below me I could smell something cooking, butter and garlic and fish going crisp in a pan. I didn’t know yet how long I’d been under. I only knew it had been long enough for morning to become night. I tried to sit up too fast.

The room tilted hard, dragging the ceiling sideways, and my skull throbbed like something had struck it from the inside. I went down again onto the pillow with a small, humiliated sound, and lay there blinking until the walls agreed to stay where they belonged. Downstairs, a pan hissed, and a boy’s laugh carried up through the floor, and underneath it, a low, amused voice, careful with whatever he was cooking the way he was careful with everything else in his life. Neither of them had heard me move. By the time footsteps came up the stairs, unhurried, ordinary, exactly the pace a man walks when there’s a seven-year-old downstairs who mustn’t hear anything else, I had almost convinced myself I’d imagined the whole business with the ceiling. Damian didn’t bother knocking. He crossed the room already reaching for me, and it was only once he was sitting on the edge of the bed, both hands framing my face, that I understood how much that unhurried pace had actually cost him.

“Hey. Look at me.” His eyes went over my face like he was checking for damage he couldn’t see.

“You’re all right. I’ve got you.”

“The room did something rude just now.”

“You’ve been out since yesterday afternoon.” His voice was low and very controlled, the voice of a man narrating a fact he’d spent the whole day trying not to panic about.

“I didn’t know if that was normal. I didn’t know if any of it was normal, taking that much from someone who isn’t...” He stopped, jaw working, and pressed his forehead to mine instead of finishing it.

“I’m here.”

“You scared me.” His voice cracked on it, plainly, without any five hundred years of composure left to hide behind.

“I have gone centuries without once feeling my chest do what it did every hour you didn’t wake up. Don’t do that to me again.” Then he kissed me, and there was nothing careful in it at all, nothing like the slow, deliberate way he usually took his time with my mouth. It was fierce, almost rough, his hands sliding into my hair like he needed the proof of me kissing him back, and I let him have it until my head had nearly stopped pounding and he finally drew back, breathing hard, forehead still against mine.

“Slow,” he said, quietly, like he was reminding himself as much as me.

“Whatever just happened between us, we take it slow from here. Your body isn’t finished catching up, and I’m not built to survive frightening myself like that twice.”

“What day is it?”

“Still Saturday. Just later than either of us planned.” A small, unsteady smile finally made it onto his face.

“I called Priya. She’s covering your classes through the weekend, no questions asked, though I expect she’s saving several up for you.” He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.

“There’s nowhere either of us needs to be tonight. Just here.” That was when Noah appeared in the doorway, in socks and a tea towel knotted around his waist like an apron, a smear of something floury on one cheek, entirely delighted with the state of the world.

“You’re awake!” He climbed straight up onto the end of the bed, unbothered by the idea his mother might want space, and looked around the room like he still couldn’t quite believe it was real.

“Mum, this house is insane. There’s a whole forest out the back. Damian let me play video games basically all day while you were asleep, and then he made dinner and it was actually really good, like restaurant good, not just dad-food good.” He said dad-food without seeming to notice he’d said it at all. I looked past him to Damian, who had gone very still in the way he did when something mattered more than he wanted his face to show. This was the first Noah had ever seen of this house. I hadn’t told him it existed. I’d only ever come here myself on the weeks he was away at camp, some instinct in me keeping this particular door closed until I understood what was behind it myself.

“You never showed me this place before,” Noah said, not accusing, just puzzled, the way kids get puzzled by adult logistics they haven’t thought to question until now. Then, before I could answer that, he’d already moved past it.

“Can we stay? Like, actually stay, not just tonight.” He looked between the two of us, seven years old and entirely earnest.

“You love him, Mum. I know you do. And I love him too. So we could just, all be a family. Properly. Why not.” He said it so simply, so entirely without drama, that neither of us had an answer ready, and he’d already gone back to inspecting the ceiling beams before either of us managed to find one. We didn’t discuss moving in properly, not with words, not for a while yet. It simply started happening around us, the way weather does. Noah’s school bag ended up by the front door of the house on the hill more mornings than not. A drawer in the room next to Damian’s filled itself with pyjamas and the stuffed fox that had survived an entire continent and back. I kept telling myself we were easing into something, testing the shape of it before committing to a name, and Damian, for his part, never once pushed, just quietly made room, the way you’d widen a doorway for something you’d already decided was going to live there.

Glenfrost had gone properly cold by the time ten days had passed, the kind of June cold that settles into your knees before you’ve even noticed your breath fogging, frost thick on the car windscreen every morning and the daylight gone thin and stingy by half past four. I went back to the gym. Noah went back to school, full of stories that had nothing to do with caves or camps, ordinary seven-year-old grievances about maths and a boy called Ollie who apparently would not stop talking about the flying fox. Life resumed its shape around us with an ease that felt, some days, almost obscene, given what the shape had so recently contained. I still had questions. They didn’t go away just because the days had started filling in around them. It was a Tuesday, ten days out, the two of us on the couch after Noah had gone down, rain going sideways against the dark windows, when I finally asked the one I’d been circling for over a week.

“Tell me about them. The ones who found you. Silas’s people.” Damian went still in the particular way he did when a question cost him something to answer honestly.

“There weren’t many of them,” he said finally.

“Four, maybe five others besides Silas, when I first knew them. Men, mostly. And one woman. Octavia.” Her name came out of him carefully, like something with an edge he didn’t want to catch himself on.

“She was Silas’s companion. Has been, as far as I know, for longer than most countries have kept their borders the same shape.”

“What was she like?”

“Cruel in a very patient way. The kind of cruelty that enjoys itself slowly.” He was quiet a moment, turning something over.

“They found me not long after I was turned. Days, maybe. I don’t have a clean memory of it.

I’ve never had a clean memory of it, not once, in five hundred years of trying.”

“What do you remember?”

“Cold stone. Somewhere underground, deep enough that no sound reached it from outside. Being carried, I think, though I don’t know by whom, or how far. Voices I couldn’t place to faces.” His jaw tightened.

“I remember being afraid in a way I hadn’t been afraid since the war, and I remember not understanding why, because by then nothing should have been able to hurt me anymore. And then there’s simply a gap. Weeks, I think, though I’ve never been able to account for how many. When the fog finally lifted I was somewhere else entirely, and Silas’s people were treating me like something they already owned.”

“That’s it? That’s all you have?”

“That’s all I’ve ever had.” Something raw moved behind his eyes.

“I’ve spent five centuries trying to fill in that gap and it has never once given me anything back.” I reached for his hand before I’d finished thinking it through.

“What if feeding helped? On me. What if it’s not about blood at all, what if it’s about, I don’t know, connection, the same way it pulled all your other memories out for me in the cave. Maybe it could pull that one loose too.” He was off the couch before I’d finished the sentence, and the look on his face stopped whatever I’d been about to add next.

“No.” The word came out low and hard, nothing gentle left in it at all.

“Absolutely not.”

“Damian...”

“I have not fed on you since that night, and I am not going to start again because you think it might jog loose a memory I’ve spent five hundred years failing to reach on my own.” He was pacing now, a tight, contained line back and forth in front of the dark window, and I understood, watching him, that the anger wasn’t really aimed at me at all.

“I don’t need to feed on you, Sarah. I haven’t needed to since the day I met you. Do you understand what it would mean if I started treating you like a key to unlock something in myself, the exact same way I once treated Camille? I watched what that did to her. I am not doing that to you for the sake of a memory that was never going to save either of us anyway.” The room was very quiet after that, rain still going against the glass, and I understood, slowly, that I’d asked the one question that could make five hundred years of composure come apart in under a minute.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“I wasn’t thinking it through.”

“I know.” He came back to the couch, dropped down beside me, some of the fight going out of him all at once.

“I know you weren’t. I just.” He exhaled, unnecessary, old habit.

“I would rather live with the gap forever than risk becoming, even a little, the thing that gap is made of.” He didn’t say anything else for a while. Then he kissed my forehead, my temple, and when I turned my face up to find his mouth properly, kissed me the way he hadn’t all evening, slow at first and then not, his hands already working at the buttons of my shirt as he drew me up off the couch and walked me backward toward the stairs. It matters, later, what happened next. He was gentle. More than gentle. He undressed me like something that might come apart under too much handling, careful of the argument still sitting raw in the room downstairs, and everything about the way he touched me said I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, over and over, without once needing the words.

I wasn’t there for it. Not properly. Some part of me kept trying to arrive and kept sliding straight back out again, snagging on the shape of what he’d just told me, a cold underground room, a memory five centuries wide with a hole punched clean through the middle of it. Damian must have felt it before I even understood it myself, some hitch in my breathing that had nothing to do with him, because he went still above me, propped on one forearm, watching my face with a stillness that had gone from tender to something more careful.

“Sarah.”

“I’m sorry.” I pressed the heels of my hands against my eyes.

“I don’t know where I keep going.” He didn’t look angry. That was almost worse, somehow, watching him absorb it with nothing but a tired, patient sadness, the particular exhaustion of a man who has just discovered there’s a room in himself he still can’t fully share, no matter how much of the rest of the house he’s opened.

“Don’t apologise.” He rolled off me, gentle about that too, and lay on his back beside me instead, close but not touching, giving me air.

“You don’t owe me anywhere your head has to be tonight.”

“Damian...”

“I mean it.” He said it kindly, which somehow made it land harder.

“Get some rest. I’ll be downstairs.” He was already up and reaching for the drawer where he kept a pair of pyjama bottoms he never actually needed, some old habit of normalcy he still performed for reasons I understood better now than I once had, and I watched him dress in the dark with a strange, hollow feeling opening up in my chest.

“Aren’t you coming to bed?”

“I don’t need sleep, Sarah.” He said it without any weight behind it at all, just fact, pulling a shirt over his head.

“You do. Properly, this time, without me lying here making you feel like you have to perform being fine for my benefit.” He leaned down and kissed my forehead once more before he went, unhurried, ordinary.

“Shout if you need me. I’ll hear you.” I didn’t think, lying there in the dark after he’d gone, that I would need to test that. The dream came fast and total, the way the worst ones do, no gentle drift into it, just suddenly there. Vanessa Cole was standing at the end of a hallway I didn’t recognise, and her eyes were wrong, red-lit from somewhere behind them that had no business being lit at all, and when she smiled her mouth was full of teeth that didn’t belong to anything human.

Blood ran from the corner of her lips in a slow, unhurried line, dripping off her chin, and she wasn’t looking at me. She was looking past me, at something on the floor I didn’t want to turn and see, and some old, useless instinct in me turned anyway. Noah was lying there. Small and white and entirely still, his colour draining out of him in real time the way water drains from a tipped glass, and I opened my mouth to scream his name and nothing came out at all, not one sound, my throat working uselessly around a silence that had teeth of its own.

I tried to move toward him and my body wouldn’t answer either, pinned to whatever floor I was standing on, and Vanessa’s red eyes finally slid to mine, patient, delighted, in no hurry at all, and I understood, with the particular clarity dreams reserve for their worst moments, that I was going to have to watch this happen and be unable to do one single thing about it. I came up out of it already trying to scream, and found the sound as trapped in my real throat as it had been in the dream, my whole body locked rigid, eyes open onto the dark of our room and unable to make a single limb obey me. Damian was there before I’d even managed a full breath. He must have heard the change in it from two floors down, some fractional catch that no ordinary man could have caught, because there was no space between the dream and his hands on my face at all, no sound of him crossing the house, just suddenly present, kneeling over me, holding my jaw, his voice pitched low and urgent.

“Sarah. Sarah, look at me, you’re safe, you’re home, nothing’s in this room but us...” I still couldn’t speak. My mouth worked and nothing came, my eyes wide and fixed on him, and I watched something close to panic move across his face, fast and total, the particular helplessness of a man who has spent five centuries able to fix almost anything physical in front of him and has just run headfirst into something he can’t.

“I don’t know what’s wrong,” he said, more to himself than to me, already turning my head to bare my throat, some old, desperate instinct taking over where reason had run out.

“I don’t know how to help you, I don’t, feeding might, it might ease whatever this is, I don’t have another...” His mouth had barely grazed my skin before the room went white. Not white like light. White like erasure, the whole bedroom simply ceasing to exist around us in a single instant, replaced by cold and stone and torchlight and the smell of something old and bitter burning, and I understood, distantly, that I was no longer lying in a bed at all, that neither of us were, and that whatever had just happened between his mouth and my throat had thrown us both somewhere neither of us had ever meant to go. We were standing in a place I had never seen before, and somehow, with total and terrible certainty, I already knew exactly when it was.

2e:T2303,

Neither of us had bodies, not really, though it didn’t feel that way at first. It felt like standing. Cold stone under feet I couldn’t see when I looked down, torchlight moving across walls that had no business existing anywhere near a bedroom in Glenfrost. I couldn’t hear Damian’s voice. I understood quickly that this wasn’t a place either of us could speak from. What I felt instead was simpler than that: his emotions, arriving in me like weather, sudden and total, with no warning before each change. The stone room came into focus slowly, some kind of workshop or cellar cut into rock, shelves crowded with jars and dried herbs, and at the centre of it, hunched over a small fire, was a boy.

I knew him instantly. He was younger than the Damian I knew, unlined, open in a way five centuries had long since worn off him. His sleeves were rolled to the elbow, and he was stirring a small copper pot with a long wooden spoon, murmuring under his breath, half incantation and half nervous habit. The liquid inside kept changing, clouding, clearing, settling finally into a deep, sparkling purple that seemed to glow from somewhere inside itself. He grinned at it. Small and private, entirely pleased with himself.

“They won’t let me watch tonight,” he said, to no one, or maybe to the pot itself.

“Antonia says it’s not for eyes like mine. But I made this. Whatever it’s for, I made it, and that has to count for something.” Devotion moved through me then, so total and uncomplicated it made my chest ache. Nothing about it felt like love, not the way I understood the word. It felt like the devotion of someone much younger than the world had any business letting him stay. The boy set the spoon down, wiped his hands on a cloth at his hip, still smiling at the light in the pot. Then his smile faded.

The purple deepened, sliding through violet into something wet and red, and the colour drained out of his face to match it. His eyes went wide. I didn’t see the men come out of the dark behind him. I only saw the knife. It went in clean, between his shoulder blades, and he was dead before he hit the floor. No lingering, no sound, just there and then gone, the light in the pot flaring once before it dimmed. I felt shock tear through me that wasn’t mine, and underneath it, a horror five hundred years old, arriving as though for the first time. The men who’d killed him didn’t linger.

Three of them, robed, faces hidden, and one snatched up the little pot, the liquid inside going purple again the instant his hand left it. They were gone through a passage in the rock within seconds. The room went quiet, just the boy’s body and the dying fire, until footsteps came fast from the passage, and she was there. Antonia was beautiful in a way that made the word feel small. Skin like warm almond wood, dark hair loose past her shoulders, a pale, sheer gown that moved like water around her. She looked like something a civilization would build temples for.

I felt jealousy rise in me before I could stop it, and almost as fast, something answered it, warm and certain, flooding in from the other side of whatever connected us. It didn’t use words. It simply said you, only you, never her, and the jealousy went quiet. Antonia saw the body. The sound that tore out of her wasn’t composed or ancient. It was raw, an animal sound, and she dropped to her knees and gathered him against her chest like she still believed grief alone could argue him back to life. I felt realisation move through the bond, slow and stunned.

She loved him. Not devotion returned. Something he’d never once let himself notice while he was alive to see it. She cried a long time. Long enough that whatever came next had clearly cost her everything she had left. Her eyes changed first, going dark all the way through, no white left anywhere. She lifted her face to a low, swollen red moon outside the window and began to chant. I didn’t understand the words, but the shape of them was unmistakable, old and heavy and without any mercy for the person speaking them.

She pulled the knife from his back with her bare hand, blood running from her own torn palm into the wound it left, and the blade simply vanished somewhere in the motion. From a fold of her gown she drew a small glass vial, dark liquid inside, thick and wrong in the torchlight, and poured it into the same place. The chanting rose. The air itself began to move, circling, and somewhere beyond the cellar walls I could see leaves stripping from an old, broad tree, joining that current like something being called rather than blown.

Then it broke, all at once, a silent detonation that passed straight through whatever we were made of in that place. I felt something grip tight and hold on beside me, the way I was holding on too, both of us anchored to nothing but each other. Antonia was gone. Not dead in any way that left a body behind. Simply gone. Somewhere else in the castle, a woman screamed, and under the scream, a child’s first cry. Wonder moved through me that wasn’t mine, tangled with grief. A birth, the very same night, and he’d never once known it. The boy on the floor began to change.

The wound closed. Old scars faded from his arms, his jaw, and his face sharpened into something colder and far more beautiful, a face built to be looked at rather than simply seen. Voices came from the passage, careful, several sets of footsteps. Silas first, younger but unmistakable, and behind him a dark-haired woman with cold eyes who could only be Octavia, and two others I didn’t know yet. They moved like soldiers clearing a room, wary even of the still air, and I understood, watching them, that even they were afraid of whatever had just happened here.

“He’s ready,” Silas said, crouching by the body.

“Get him up. We move before whatever did this comes back.” They lifted him between them, careful, almost reverent, and carried him toward the passage. I felt a desperate pull from the bond, some need to follow, to finally see where this went. We didn’t get further than the doorway.

“Mum?” A small fist on real wood, breaking through the stone and the cold like paper tearing.

“Mum, are you there? It’s really bright outside, can we go feed the ducks?” The cellar dissolved, and I opened my eyes onto our own ceiling and Damian’s face above mine, both of us gasping like we’d come up from actual water. Noah’s voice carried faintly through the door, patient, oblivious, waiting.

“One minute, baby,” I called out, my voice not quite steady, and heard him thump back down the hallway, easily satisfied. Damian hadn’t moved. He was still braced over me, breathing hard for no reason his body actually needed, staring at nothing.

“Hey.” I touched his face.

“Where did you go?”

“I keep trying to understand what I felt in there.” His voice was rough.

“Watching her. I never once let myself consider, while I was alive, that she might have loved me back. I told myself it was devotion, only ever devotion, because devotion was safe. It didn’t ask anything of me I wasn’t already giving freely.” He looked down at me.

“I never expected it returned, Sarah. That’s the truth of it. I gave everything I had to a woman

I never once believed saw me as anything more than something worth teaching.”

“I was jealous of her.” I said it plainly, no longer ashamed of it the way I had been in the vision itself.

“The second I saw her, before I even understood who she was. She’s beautiful in a way I don’t think I could ever compete with, and some old, stupid part of me went straight to comparing.”

“I felt that.” He tucked a strand of hair back from my face, achingly gentle.

“I felt it happen in you before you’d even finished having the thought, and I don’t think I have ever wanted to correct something faster in my life.”

“You don’t have to keep correcting it. I know it’s not fair to her, or to you, being jealous of a woman five hundred years dead.”

“It isn’t about fair.” He kissed my forehead, then the corner of my mouth.

“I loved her the only way a boy that age knows how to love someone who’s saved him and taught him and never once treated him like he was small. That isn’t what this is, Sarah. What I feel for you isn’t devotion. It’s not gratitude wearing a nicer coat. I have had five hundred years to learn every difference there is, and I am telling you plainly: I love you. Only you. Nothing about what I felt for her, then or now, touches it.”

“Say it again,” I said, quieter now.

“I love you.” He said it against my mouth this time, soft and certain.

“I love you, and there is no version of that history back there that changes it.”

2f:T1e05,

We came back from wherever that cellar had been feeling like two people who’d been dropped from a height. I don’t have a better way to describe it. My whole body ached in places that made no physical sense, my head thick and slow for days afterward, and Damian, if anything, seemed worse, quieter than I’d ever known him, prone to going still mid-sentence with the particular look of a man replaying something he still didn’t have the full shape of. Neither of us tried again. I want to be clear about that. Whatever door had opened between his mouth and my throat that night, we left it firmly shut for the rest of that week, both of us moving carefully around each other and around the whole subject, like two people tiptoeing past a room they weren’t ready to go back into.

We went back to my house. It wasn’t a decision so much as a drift, the hill house suddenly carrying a weight neither of us mentioned out loud, and my own small cottage, with its ordinary kettle and its ordinary noise from the street, felt like somewhere easier to simply exist in for a while. Damian spent most of that week on the phone, low-voiced, pacing, speaking to people I never saw and rarely got names for. Old favours, he called them, contacts scattered across a dozen countries who owed him things going back further than most of their own family trees.

He was trying to find out more about Silas’s people, where they’d gone to ground, whether Octavia had surfaced anywhere in the years since, what history existed between them that I still didn’t have the full shape of. He didn’t share much of what he learned. I didn’t push. We were both still finding our footing after the cellar, and pushing felt, that week, like exactly the wrong kind of weight to add. I threw myself into the cross country run instead, mostly because it was the one thing in my life that week with a clean, achievable shape to it.

The gym was sponsoring the whole event, a fun run through the reserve and back for the primary school, proceeds going toward new equipment for the after-school programme, and I’d somehow ended up in charge of most of it: course marking, water stations, a first aid tent, enough orange bibs to outfit every child in Glenfrost twice over. Damian turned up at the gym most evenings on the pretence of helping me count stock, and more than once we ended up tucked into the back office after closing, his mouth finding mine between boxes of unsold protein bars, both of us laughing too much to be properly serious about it, stolen and quick and exactly the kind of ordinary I think we both needed that week.

The night before the run, Noah went to Priya’s for a sleepover with Arjun, his best friend from school and, as far as I could tell, his primary source of both trouble and joy in roughly equal measure. He left with a sleeping bag under one arm and a list of snacks he’d negotiated with the confidence of a much older child, and the house went quiet behind him in a way that felt, for the first time in weeks, entirely our own. We spent the evening finishing the last of the run’s preparations at my kitchen table, more mundane than either of us probably wanted to admit given everything else sitting unresolved between us: counting out bibs into number order, double-checking the course map against the reserve’s actual paths, filling a crate with bottled water and a box of plasters and the kind of emergency whistle nobody ever wants to need.

Damian took the whole business more seriously than I expected, cross-referencing the water station distances against an old marathon he claimed to have watched being invented in Boston, which led to an argument about whether that even counted as relevant experience for a five-kilometre school fun run, which led, somewhere around nine o’clock, crate finally packed and forgotten by the door, to him pulling me into his lap instead of finishing his sentence.

My own house had started to feel like a stranger’s, these past weeks, all my furniture in the wrong proportion to the life I was apparently building, and there was something in that thought, that evening, that made me want him with an urgency I hadn’t let myself feel in days. I won’t be shy about what happened next. It matters, I think, that some nights between us were still entirely, simply good, untouched by cellars or ancient witches or gaps in five hundred years of memory. He carried me to my own bedroom the way he had a hundred times before, and there was nothing careful in it tonight, no holding back for fear I might break.

He laid me out across sheets that still smelled faintly of my own detergent rather than his cedar, and took his time with every single inch of me like he intended to remind my own house who I belonged to. His mouth found my throat first, working slow and deliberate down the column of it, teeth grazing just enough to make my whole body arch up into him, and when he finally pulled my shirt over my head he looked at me for a long moment before he did anything else at all, like he still, after everything, hadn’t gotten used to being allowed to look.

“Tell me what you want,” he murmured against my collarbone, his voice gone rough at the edges.

“Everything,” I said, and felt him smile against my skin. He gave it to me slowly, and then not slowly at all, one hand pinning my wrists loosely above my head while the other mapped every place that made my breath catch, patient in a way that had nothing gentle left in it by the time he finally settled his weight over me properly, forehead to forehead, both of us breathing hard. When he finally moved inside me it was deliberate, deep, a rhythm that built with a certainty that left no question of who was setting the pace, and I came apart under him with his name torn out of me and no room left anywhere in my head for cellars or witches or anything at all except the two of us and the particular, ordinary miracle of my own bed. Afterward, we lay tangled together in the dark, his fingers tracing slow circles against my spine, my head on his chest listening to the long, patient absence of a heartbeat that had somehow become the most familiar sound in my life.

That was when we heard it. A sound from downstairs, small, deliberate, the specific creak of a floorboard taking weight it shouldn’t have. I felt Damian go rigid beneath me before I’d even fully registered what I’d heard, his whole body shifting from relaxed to lethal in the space of half a second, one hand pressing flat against my sternum, urgent, silent, telling me to stay exactly where I was. He was gone from the bed before I could ask. I don’t know how long he was downstairs. It felt like a long time and probably wasn’t, my whole body strung tight in the dark, listening for anything at all, and when he finally came back up he moved slowly, carefully, in a way that told me before he said a single word that whatever he’d found, it hadn’t been nothing.

“There’s no one there,” he said, low, standing very still in the doorway.

“Whoever it was is already gone.”

“Whoever it was?”

“Someone came inside.” His jaw was tight, his eyes gone somewhere distant and calculating.

“I can smell it. Something moved through this house tonight, close enough to have stood in that hallway and watched us, and I don’t recognise the scent at all.” He looked at me, and for the first time since the cellar, I saw real fear on his face, not for himself.

“Whoever it was, Sarah, it wasn’t human. And it wasn’t anyone I’ve ever met before.”

30:T2798,

The morning of the run came in cold and bright, the particular hard blue sky Glenfrost gets maybe a dozen times a winter, frost still silvering the grass on the reserve when I arrived at six to start setting up the water stations. Damian came with me, ostensibly to help carry crates, actually, I understood within about ten minutes, to walk the entire course perimeter twice before a single child arrived, checking sightlines and treelines with the particular thoroughness of a man who had not slept, had never needed to sleep, and was not going to let that fact go to waste this morning.

“You’re doing the thing,” I told him, watching him scan the tree line behind the third water station for the second time.

“I’m helping.”

“You’re doing the thing where you pretend to help while actually casing the entire venue for threats.”

“Both things can be true.” He didn’t smile when he said it, which told me more than the words did. I hadn’t slept much either, if I’m honest. I’d spent most of the night lying rigid beside him, listening to a house that had gone back to sounding perfectly ordinary, replaying the particular stillness of his face in the doorway, something moved through this house tonight and I don’t recognise the scent at all, until exhaustion had finally won out somewhere near dawn. I woke feeling strung together with tape rather than rest, and I spent the drive to the reserve doing the thing I’ve always been good at, which is arranging my face into something that looks entirely fine.

The one genuinely steadying thought I had, the one I kept coming back to every time my chest went tight, was Noah, three streets away in Priya’s kitchen, almost certainly elbow-deep in samosa filling with Arjun by now, gloriously, safely oblivious to any of this. Whatever else was true this morning, my son was exactly where he was supposed to be, wrapped up in nothing more dangerous than too much cumin and a friend who made him laugh. By eight the reserve had filled properly, the whole primary school and half their families turned out in matching event t-shirts, kids doing that particular pre-race hopping that seems to exist purely to burn off nervous energy, parents clutching coffees against the cold.

I ran the registration table on autopilot, checking names off a clipboard, handing out bibs in number order, and felt Damian’s presence the entire time like a hand at the small of my back even when he was fifty metres away, positioned near the second water station where the course cut briefly out of sight of the main field. The starting horn went at nine sharp, three hundred small, determined bodies thundering off down the marked path in a cloud of breath and gravel dust, and for about twenty minutes the whole morning ran exactly the way it should have. I manned the halfway table, cheering on stragglers, refilling cups, and let myself believe, for those twenty minutes, that today might simply be a normal day.

It was Fenella from the PTA who found me at the water table, flustered, apologetic, asking if I’d seen the first-aid kit, because a girl near the back had gone over on the gravel and skinned her knee rather badly, over past the tree break where the course looped closest to the old maintenance shed. I grabbed the kit without thinking twice and jogged the two hundred metres toward the shed, already composing the reassuring things you say to an eight-year-old with a bleeding knee. There was no girl at the tree break. I understood that a half-second too late, the reserve’s noise falling away behind me as the path curved out of sight of the main field, and turned to find a young woman standing very still between the trees, and it took my brain a full, sick second to place the face under all the wrongness that had been added to it.

“Vanessa.” She smiled, and her mouth was full of teeth that had no business being there.

“You remember me.” Her voice had a raw, hungry edge to it that hadn’t been there in life, someone speaking through an appetite rather than around it.

“That’s interesting, isn’t it. Because I remember everything now too. Every single thing he took from me.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Damian’s little trick. The one where he reaches into your head and rearranges what you’re allowed to keep.” She stepped closer, and I backed up automatically, the medical kit still stupidly clutched in one hand.

“It doesn’t survive the turning, did you know that? Whatever he smoothed over, whatever he made me forget so I could go on believing some stranger stopped me before I hurt your son, all of it came back the second Octavia gave me these.” She bared the teeth again, savouring my flinch.

“I remember the pool block. I remember exactly what I was trying to do to him, and exactly what your monster did to me for it. Turns out dying and coming back is a wonderful cure for selective memory.”

“Octavia turned you.” I said it slowly, understanding arriving in pieces.

“Why.”

“She wanted to know how her mate died.” Vanessa’s smile didn’t waver.

“Stone, Sarah. Silas turned to actual stone, and nobody who was there could tell her how, except a broken little human girl who’d spent fifteen years fixated on a man who’d never once looked at her twice, and might, with the right encouragement, be persuaded to go digging anyway. I was useful. I still am. And it turns out I hate you enough that being useful to her isn’t even a hardship.”

“I saw you two last night, you know.” Her eyes went hard, something more personal than hunger moving under the words now.

“Through your own window, like an idiot who didn’t even think to draw the curtains. The way he looked at you.” Her lip curled.

“I used to imagine that look. I used to lie awake wondering what I’d done wrong, what I hadn’t given him, why it was never me he looked at like that. And then I finally worked it out, watching you through that glass. Nothing. You haven’t done anything I didn’t do first. You’re just older, and tireder, and somehow that’s what he wanted instead of me.” She was in front of me before I’d registered her moving, one hand closing hard around my jaw, and I felt something sharp drag once, deliberately, across my cheekbone, a thin line of fire that welled hot and wet almost instantly.

“There. Now you’ll have something to remember me by too.”

“There are an awful lot of small, warm things over there,” she added, almost idly, her eyes sliding past me toward the reserve, the field full of children, and something in her face sharpened with an interest that turned my stomach entirely over.

“I haven’t fed today. I’m supposed to be patient about that. I’m not very good at patient yet.”

“Don’t you dare—” She hit me before I finished the sentence. It wasn’t like the alley, and it wasn’t like anything I’d braced myself for. There was no warning, no build, just her hand closing around my throat and my whole body leaving the ground, and then the tree break itself coming up sideways to meet me, my shoulder taking the impact wrong, a white, total pain tearing up through the joint that made the whole morning go briefly and completely silent around me. I hit the ground and she was on me again before I’d finished falling, nails raking down my forearm hard enough to open it, four ragged lines that filled with blood almost faster than I could feel them, and I screamed, properly screamed, the sound tearing out of me raw and undignified, and she laughed at the sound of it, delighted, dragging me up by the hair only to slam me back down against the frozen ground a second time.

“Damian!” It came out broken, barely a word at all. He was there before the echo of it finished, but I understood, even through the pain fogging everything at the edges, that he wasn’t alone in arriving. A second shape dropped down from somewhere above the shed roof at the exact same moment, landing with a stillness that made my already-screaming nerves scream harder. Octavia looked exactly like she had in the cellar, five hundred years unchanged, dark hair, cold assessing eyes, and she didn’t so much as glance at me lying broken in the grass.

“Get away from her.” Damian’s voice came out somewhere below human, no restraint left in it at all, and he had Vanessa off me and into the nearest tree trunk hard enough to crack the bark before I’d finished trying to drag myself backward through the frost. I didn’t make it far. My shoulder wouldn’t take weight, my arm wouldn’t stop bleeding, and every attempt to move sent a fresh, nauseating wave of pain up through my whole side, and I lay there, useless, watching two fights that had suddenly, horribly, become one. Octavia didn’t waste time on words this round. She and Vanessa moved together with a coordination that told me this had been planned, rehearsed, timed for exactly this moment, Vanessa circling wide while Octavia came straight in, and I watched Damian take a blow meant to distract him from one side just long enough for the other to land somewhere I couldn’t see properly, a sound like a rifle shot that I understood, sickly, was a bone. He went down onto one knee.

“Sarah, run.” His voice came out strangled, the first time in either book I’d ever heard him sound frightened for himself rather than for me.

“Get up and run, now—” I couldn’t run. I could barely lift my head. I watched Octavia’s boot come down on his outstretched wrist and heard the sound it made, and I watched Vanessa’s hand close around his throat from behind, both of them working him between them with the terrible, patient efficiency of people who had done this exact thing to someone else before, and I understood, lying broken in the frozen grass with my own blood soaking dark into the ground beneath me, that for the second time since I’d known him, Damian was losing.

31:T1517,

I tried for the magic, whatever it ends up meaning. I clawed for it the way you claw for a light switch in the dark, some old, half-remembered shape of the thing that had torn out of me in the cave, and found nothing there at all. No heat. No current. Just my own ordinary, broken body and a scream that stayed a scream, nothing more, useless against what was happening twenty feet away. Octavia had Damian’s arm wrenched up behind him at an angle that shouldn’t have been possible, and Vanessa’s teeth were at his throat, not feeding, not yet, savouring instead, the way a cat savours the last stillness before it stops letting something go. Damian was not a small man, and he was not, by any ordinary measure, weak, but two of them working together had found the exact seams five centuries of restraint had never been tested against, and I watched him struggle and gain nothing, watched blood run from his temple in a way I’d never once seen it run before.

“Where is she.” Octavia’s voice was almost gentle, which made it worse.

“The witch who did this to my mate. I know it wasn’t you, not really, not the way it needed to be. Something is using you as a door. I would very much like to know what.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Damian’s voice came out thick, blood in it now.

“You’re lying to me very badly for a man who’s had five hundred years of practice.” She twisted his arm further, and the sound he made then was one I will hear for the rest of my life, raw and involuntary and entirely without the composure he’d spent centuries building.

“Vanessa, darling. I think it’s time.” I don’t remember deciding to move. I remember the ground under my hands, cold and wet with my own blood, and I remember dragging myself up onto one knee by sheer refusal rather than any strength I actually had left, my shoulder screaming, my vision swimming at the edges, and I remember the sound that came out of me wasn’t a scream at all this time. It was his name. Nothing answered it. No white light. No force. Just my own raw voice cracking on two syllables in an empty stretch of frozen grass, and for one endless, terrible second I understood that whatever had saved Noah in that cave was not going to save Damian now, that I had nothing left to offer except my own broken body dragging itself toward a fight I could not possibly survive joining.

Damian heard me anyway. I don’t know what it cost him. I only know that something in him found one more measure of strength he shouldn’t have had left, and he drove his free elbow back into Octavia’s ribs hard enough to break her grip for half a second, just long enough to twist, just long enough to get one hand up between himself and Vanessa’s teeth before they closed. He threw her off him bodily, and she landed badly, disoriented for the first time all morning, and Damian was on his feet before she’d finished skidding across the frost, the same length of dark, sharpened wood already back in his hand.

“This ends now,” he said, and there was nothing left in his voice that resembled mercy. Vanessa didn’t get up in time. I watched her eyes go wide, the same flash of the girl from the gym doorway underneath all that borrowed hunger, and I watched Damian drive the stake home in one motion that had no hesitation anywhere inside it. She didn’t scream. There was a sound, brief and terrible, and then simply nothing at all, her whole body going still and grey the way ash goes still after the fire’s finished with it. Octavia was already moving by the time he turned. Not fighting, not fleeing in a straight line either, something more controlled than either, backing toward the treeline with her eyes fixed on him the entire time, unhurried even now, even bleeding from where his elbow had caught her.

“This isn’t finished,” she said, and there was nothing in her voice that sounded like a woman who’d just lost.

“I know what she is now, Damian. I felt it, watching her try to reach for something and fail. Whatever’s in her hasn’t woken up properly yet. I can wait for that.” Then she was gone, the treeline swallowing her whole, and the reserve was silent except for the distant, oblivious cheering of a fun run still going on three hundred metres away, entirely unaware that anything at all had happened. Damian was at my side before I’d finished trying to stand, and the look on his face when he saw the state of my arm, my shoulder, the blood soaked dark through my sleeve, undid something in him that I felt rather than saw.

“Sarah.” His hands hovered over me, uncertain for the first time in longer than I’d known him, afraid to touch anywhere that might be broken.

“Sarah, I’m so sorry, I should never have let this happen, I should have seen this coming—”

“You’re alive,” I said, and found that was the only thing in the whole terrible morning I actually had room to care about.

“You’re alive. That’s all that matters right now.” He gathered me up as carefully as he’d ever done anything in his life, and carried me away from the tree break, away from the ash still settling into the frost behind us, and somewhere behind him, unseen, unheard, something old and patient was already deciding how long it was willing to wait.

32:T27c7,

The story that made it into my hospital chart was that I’d been thrown from the embankment by a dog that had bolted off its lead during the run, a plausible enough disaster for a reserve full of excited children and off-lead terriers, and plausible enough, apparently, for whoever Damian had quietly spoken to in the two hours before the paramedics were allowed to properly examine me. I never asked how many minds that story had needed to pass through before it held. Some things I was learning not to ask. What was real: a fractured shoulder, four stitches across my forearm, three more at my cheekbone, bruising down one whole side of my body that turned, over the following days, an increasingly spectacular range of colours. What was real, too, was Damian, in the chair beside my bed for the better part of a week, arms folded, eyes closed, doing an excellent impression of a man asleep, while I understood, every time I stirred, that he hadn’t actually slept a single minute of it.

“You don’t have to keep pretending,” I told him, on the third night, my voice still thick with whatever they’d given me for the pain.

“The nurses are more comfortable with it.” He didn’t open his eyes.

“A man who never sleeps and never leaves makes people ask questions I’d rather not answer at two in the morning.” Noah stayed with Priya the whole week, an extended sleepover that had started as one awkward night and simply kept being renewed, and I understood, watching Damian’s face every time we discussed it, how much it cost him not to have his own eyes on my son every hour of every day. Priya sent photos instead, Noah and Arjun building an elaborate fort out of couch cushions, Noah’s face smeared with something involving too much golden syrup, and I made myself smile at each one and mean it, because the alternative was letting the fear in properly, and I didn’t have room for that on top of everything else.

The visitors came in waves. Fenella brought a fruit basket so enormous it required its own chair. Two of my spin regulars turned up together, flowers in one hand and gossip in the other, the whole gym apparently convinced I’d fought off the dog myself before going down, a version of events I did nothing to correct. Priya came almost daily, and on the fourth day arrived with a covered dish that filled the whole ward with the smell of cumin and ghee before she’d even gotten the lid off.

“Kichdi,” she said, setting it down like a small, sacred object.

“My mother’s recipe. It’s what you make for anyone who’s had something happen to their body, doesn’t matter what, this is what fixes it.” She spooned some onto a bowl and pressed it into my one working hand before I could argue.

“Eat. You look like a woman who hasn’t had a proper meal in a week, which, given the hospital food, you probably haven’t.” It was, genuinely, the best thing I’d eaten in longer than a week, warm and simple and entirely unlike anything I could have made for myself in that state, and I ate the whole bowl while Priya updated me on Noah’s ongoing campaign to be allowed a hamster, and for twenty minutes the room felt like nothing more sinister than a woman recovering from an ordinary accident, surrounded by people who loved her. Noah came the next afternoon, ferried in by Priya for a supervised hour, and arrived clutching a bunch of grocery-store carnations so tightly he’d half crushed the stems, his face carrying the particular seriousness of a seven-year-old determined not to cry in front of his mother.

“I picked the purple ones because you like purple,” he said, thrusting them at me like an offering.

“Arjun’s mum said flowers help you get better faster. Is that true?”

“It’s absolutely true,” I told him, and meant it more than the actual science probably warranted, pulling him carefully into my one good side and breathing in the strange, comforting smell of a small boy who’d clearly been eating too many golden syrup sandwiches.

“Thank you, baby. They’re perfect.” It was Damian who did the parts nobody else saw. He fed me when the shoulder made even a spoon too much some evenings, patient and unhurried, holding the bowl and waiting without a single flicker of impatience while I managed each mouthful on my own terms. He helped me wash on the mornings the nurses were too stretched to manage it themselves, careful of the cast, careful of the stitches, his hands moving over me with a tenderness that had nothing to do with wanting and everything to do with simply refusing to let me feel like a burden for needing help at all. Some nights, once the ward had gone quiet, he climbed carefully onto the narrow bed beside me anyway, mindful of every injury, and just held me, his chin resting against the top of my head, saying nothing, needing to say nothing.

“Kiss me,” I said, on the fifth night, tired of being careful. He did, slow and soft, barely more than a press of his mouth to mine, mindful of the stitches at my cheek, and then again at my temple, and then at the corner of my jaw, unhurried, the kind of kiss that asks nothing and simply gives.

“I keep thinking about how alone I’d be right now if you weren’t here,” I admitted, into the quiet after.

“I don’t have anyone else, Damian. Not really. Priya, the gym, that’s it. That’s my whole family, and none of them chose me the way you did.”

“Tell me,” he said, gently, the way he always did when he wanted the whole of something rather than the edges of it. So I told him. I told him about the foster homes, six of them by the time I turned sixteen, none of them cruel exactly, just temporary in the particular way that teaches a child not to unpack properly. I told him I’d never known my mother’s face, never had a single photograph, no family to trace backward toward, just a file with a birth date and no other names attached to it. And I told him about the one constant thread through all of it, impossibly, a soft-spoken older woman who’d worked as a caretaker at the first home I’d ever been placed in, and who had, somehow, against every reasonable explanation, turned up working at the second home too, and the third, following me from placement to placement like she’d simply decided, quietly and without ever being asked, that I wasn’t going to go through any of it without at least one familiar face.

“I called her Nana Flo,” I said.

“Everyone did, by the end. I never asked how she kept ending up wherever I did. I was a kid. Kids don’t question the good things, they just hold onto them.” I laughed, and it came out a little wet.

“I haven’t seen her since I aged out of the system. Almost twenty years. I used to wonder if I imagined how strange that was, a stranger following a foster kid through six different placements. I don’t wonder anymore. I think, now, that nothing about my life has ever been quite as ordinary as I told myself it was.” Damian went very still beside me, something moving behind his eyes that I didn’t have the energy that night to properly examine.

“What happened to her?”

“I don’t know. She was there for my last review, and then I turned eighteen, and then she just wasn’t anywhere I looked for her.” I closed my eyes, exhaustion finally catching up with me properly.

“I think about her more than I let myself say out loud.” I was still turning the thought over, half asleep, when a voice from the doorway made every hair on my body rise at once.

“Sarah.” I knew it before I’d even opened my eyes. Some things live in the body rather than the memory, and that voice, soft and cracked with age and entirely unmistakable, had been living in mine for thirty years.

“Nana?” She stood in the doorway looking impossibly old, older than she should have been able to get in the two decades since I’d last seen her, silver hair pinned back the exact same way it always had, and her eyes, when they found mine, were wet and fierce and entirely without surprise, as though finding me broken in a hospital bed was simply the thing she’d expected all along.

“You’ve started showing it,” she said, crossing the room faster than a woman her apparent age should have been able to move, taking my good hand in both of hers.

“The power. I felt it wake up, weeks ago now, all the way from where I was. I should have come sooner.” Her grip tightened, urgent.

“Bad people will come looking for you now, my love, the moment they understand what you are. We need to move. Tonight, if we can manage it.”

“Nana, I don’t understand, how did you—”

“There isn’t time to explain properly. There will be, I promise you there will be, but not here, not with—”

“She’s not going anywhere.” Damian’s voice came from the doorway behind her, quiet and absolutely immovable, and Nana Flo turned, and I watched her whole face change the instant she saw him, recognition and horror arriving together.

“You,” she breathed.

“You’re one of them.” Her hand came up before I could say a word, fingers curling into some old, precise shape, and she began to speak, low and fast, words I didn’t understand but recognised anyway, the same shape of sound I’d heard once before in a cellar five hundred years gone, and Damian’s hands flew to his own throat, his whole body seizing, some invisible grip closing around him that had nothing physical behind it at all.

“You will not touch her again,” Nana Flo said, mid-chant, her voice gone hard as stone, and Damian made a sound I had never once heard from him, choked and desperate, dropping to one knee.

“Nana!” I was off the bed before the pain in my shoulder had a chance to stop me, my voice tearing out raw and absolute.

“No! He is the love of my life, please stop it! He is not bad, he’s not what you think. He saved me. He’s saved me so many times I’ve lost count. I love him.” The chanting stopped.

33:T3a71,

I woke to a steady, insistent beeping, and it took me a groggy, disoriented moment to place it, a small plastic clip pinching my index finger, wired to a monitor tracking my own heartbeat back at me in electronic chirps. The light in the room had changed completely, hard and white and properly morning, nothing at all like the dim, early-evening hush Nana Flo had walked into the night before. Damian wasn’t in his chair. I registered that with a small, unreasonable jolt of panic before I remembered, piece by piece, what had actually happened: the chanting, my own scream tearing his name into the room, the sudden and total silence after, and then, apparently, nothing at all.

I’d gone down. I didn’t remember going down. I only remembered wanting, more than I had ever wanted anything, for both of them to simply stop. I opened my mouth to ask where he was, and didn’t get a single word out before he was there, a blur of motion that resolved into him sitting on the edge of my bed, both hands finding my face with a franticness I was starting to recognise as simply how he loved. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nana Flo flinch, just slightly, at the speed of it. She was in the visitor’s chair, exactly where she must have been all night, and something in her face went carefully, deliberately blank the moment she caught me watching her watch him.

“What happened?” My voice came out cracked, unused.

“You fainted, honey.” Damian’s thumb moved slow across my cheekbone, careful of the stitches.

“Hard, and for longer than anyone here was comfortable with. The doctors want to keep you one more day, just to be sure, before they’ll let you go anywhere.”

“You tried to do magic.” Nana Flo’s voice cut in before I could respond, sharp with something that wasn’t quite accusation.

“It took more out of you than your body could afford to give. What were you trying to do?” “I don’t know.” That was the honest, humiliating truth of it.

“I was trying to protect him. I don’t know what I was reaching for, I just knew I needed it to work.” I pushed myself up against the pillows, my shoulder protesting the movement, and looked at her properly for the first time since the chanting had stopped.

“Why did you do that to him? You’re a witch too. You, of all people, should understand what it costs to have someone reach into you like that.”

“Because he’s a vampire, Sarah.” She said it like it should have settled the matter entirely.

“Because I have spent thirty years keeping you away from exactly this, and I walk in to find you in a hospital bed with one wrapped around you like he has any right to be there.”

“He has more right than anyone else in this room.” My voice was shaking now, and I let it.

“He’s saved my life more times than I can count on both hands. Where were you for any of that?”

“Watching.” She didn’t flinch from it.

“From further away than I wanted to be, but watching. I have watched you since before you could walk, Sarah. I have moved my entire life around the shape of keeping you alive. I don’t expect you to remember most of it, but I have never once stopped.”

“Watching isn’t the same as being here.” Damian’s voice had gone very quiet, very controlled, the particular stillness he got right before something cost him a great deal to say evenly.

“I have been here. Every single time it mattered, I was the one standing between her and whatever was trying to hurt her.”

“And yet here she is.” Nana Flo’s gaze swept once, deliberately, over the cast, the stitches, the monitor still beeping its steady rhythm.

“Broken in a hospital bed, under your protection. Forgive me if that record doesn’t inspire the confidence you seem to think it should.”

“That’s not fair.”

“Neither is any of this, and yet.”

“Stop it. Both of you.” I hadn’t meant to shout, but it came out that way regardless, loud enough that a nurse’s shape paused briefly in the corridor glass before moving on.

“This is a hospital. There are actual sick people on the other side of that wall, and the two of you are standing here scoring points off each other like children.” I looked between them, exhausted in a way that had nothing to do with the fainting.

“I love you both. I don’t know how to say that more plainly. But I am not going to lie here and referee a fight about who gets to keep me safest, because the answer, apparently, is neither of you managed it alone, and I am so tired of being the thing everyone’s fighting over instead of the person everyone’s actually talking to.” Neither of them said anything to that.

“I’m going with Damian,” I said, into the silence, and felt my own throat tighten before I’d even finished the sentence.

“He’s my partner. He’s the closest thing to a father Noah has ever had, and I am not walking away from that for anyone, not even you, Nana, not after everything we’ve built.” My eyes were properly wet now, and I didn’t bother hiding it.

“But you owe me the truth. All of it. Thirty years of it. You don’t get to walk back into my life after two decades and expect me to just follow you out that door without a single answer.” Damian’s expression, when I looked at him, had gone soft in a way that undid something in my chest, love so plain on his face it was almost difficult to look at directly. Nana Flo was quiet a long moment, and then, finally, she nodded, once, something in her shoulders giving up a fight she seemed to understand she’d already lost. We moved to the house on the hill that afternoon, Nana Flo installed in the back seat of Damian’s car with the particular rigid dignity of a woman who has decided to tolerate something rather than approve of it, and Damian, for all the fury still simmering behind his eyes, said nothing at all about her coming. He simply drove, and got us settled, made tea neither woman drank, and then stood in the doorway with his car keys already in hand.

“I’ll collect Noah from school,” he said, to me, carefully not looking at Nana Flo at all.

“That gives the two of you a few hours.” His eyes found mine, softer now.

“For whatever she needs to tell you.” He left before either of us could argue, and the house went very quiet around the two of us, just the fire settling in the grate and Nana Flo’s hands folded tightly in her lap.

“Thirty years,” I said.

“Start there.”

“Your mother,” she said, and her voice cracked properly for the first time since she’d walked into that hospital room.

“My daughter. She died giving birth to you.” I felt something in my chest go very still.

“It’s always been this way, in our line.” She wasn’t looking at me now, staring instead into the fire, the words coming slow and careful, like she’d rehearsed them a thousand times across thirty years and still couldn’t make them easy.

“Every other generation carries it properly. Magic, full and awake from birth. Her daughter, the next one down, is born entirely ordinary, no trace of it at all, until that daughter has a daughter of her own, and the whole cycle starts again. I had it. Your mother didn’t. You were always going to. That part was never in question.”

“Then why did she die?”

“Because the birth itself is dangerous, when the power skips a generation and then comes roaring back all at once in the child. Her body wasn’t built to carry what you were, not fully. I felt it happening from two towns away, and I got there in time to save you, only you, there was nothing left to be done for her by then.” Her hands twisted together, white-knuckled.

“I did magic that night I’ve spent thirty years hoping I’d never have to use again, just to keep you breathing until you could breathe on your own. And when it was done, I understood exactly what I was looking at. A child powerful enough that the same people who’d been hunting our line for centuries would find her eventually, the same way they always have.”

“So you hid me.”

“I hid you so thoroughly I became a stranger to my own grandchild, moving from foster home to foster home just to stay near enough to watch, close enough to step in if it ever came to that, far enough that no one following our bloodline would ever think to look at a quiet old caretaker twice.” Her voice broke properly now, and I watched thirty years of careful, terrible restraint finally give out all at once.

“I have hated every single year of it, Sarah. I want you to understand that. I did not choose distance because it was easy. I chose it because it was the only thing standing between you and the exact kind of danger you found anyway, the moment your power finally woke up.”

“I felt so alone.” It came out of me before I could stop it, thick and furious and entirely unguarded.

“My whole life, Nana. No mother, no father, no family, just me and a string of houses that were never mine, and you were there, the one constant thing I had, and then you were just gone, and I never understood why, and I have spent twenty years believing I simply wasn’t worth staying for.”

“You were worth everything.” She reached for my hand, and I let her take it, both of us crying properly now, the fire the only sound in the room besides it.

“You were worth thirty years of a life I never got to have, watching from doorways instead of holding you the way I wanted to every single day. I am sorry, my love. I am sorrier than I know how to say. But I would do every single year of it again, exactly the same way, if it meant you got to stand here in front of me now, alive, and furious, and finally asking me why.”

“And Noah.” I wiped at my face, some new fear arriving all at once.

“The cycle. Does it, will he—”

“No.” She said it with the first real certainty she’d offered all afternoon.

“You broke it, Sarah. However it happened, whatever it means, you had a son instead of a daughter, and the line runs through daughters. Noah is entirely, wonderfully ordinary, and whatever comes hunting for what you are, it has no reason at all to come hunting for him.” I don’t know how long we sat like that, crying quietly in front of a fire neither of us tended, before the front door went and Noah’s voice carried through the hall, bright and completely unaware of everything the last twenty-four hours had contained.

“Mum!” He was across the room and into my good side before I’d finished turning toward the sound, warm and solid and smelling like the school bag he hadn’t bothered to put down, and I held onto him with my one working arm like he was the only steady thing left in the world.

“You’re home! Are you all better? Damian said you fell but you’re okay now, right?”

“I’m okay,” I told him, and meant it more than I had in longer than I could remember.

“Better than okay, actually.” He pulled back to grin at me, and it was only then that he noticed Nana Flo, still seated by the fire, watching the two of us with an expression I didn’t have a name for.

“Who’s that?”

“This,” I said, and found, to my own surprise, that I was smiling through the last of the tears, “is your great-grandmother. Nana Flo. She’s going to be staying with us for a while.” Noah’s whole face changed, curiosity arriving so fast it nearly knocked the surprise clean off his features.

“I have a great-grandma?” He said it like I’d just told him the house had a secret second floor.

“Since when?”

“Since always, actually,” I said.

“You’ve just never met her before.” He considered this with enormous seriousness and turned the full weight of his attention on Nana Flo, who was already easing up out of her chair, watching him with something soft and unguarded she hadn’t shown me even once that afternoon.

“How come I’ve never met you if you’re my great-grandma?” He tilted his head, working through it out loud the way he did with maths problems he hadn’t quite cracked yet.

“Are you from Mum’s side or my dad’s side? Wait, is Mum’s mum your daughter? Where’s she? Do I have a great-grandpa too?”

“One at a time,” Nana Flo said, laughing properly now, the sound younger than her face.

“I’m on your mum’s side. And I’m afraid there’s no great-grandpa to meet, love, he’s long gone.”

“How old are you, then?”

“Noah.” Heat crawled up my neck.

“That’s not really—”

“It’s a perfectly fair question.” Nana Flo waved me off, already moving toward the kitchen, and Noah trailed after her the way he trailed after anyone he’d decided was interesting.

“Old enough to remember when the telly only had one channel, if that means anything to you.”

“That’s so old.” He said it with frank, uncomplicated wonder, climbing up onto a stool at the counter to watch her survey the fridge.

“Do you live near us? Can you come to my school things? Arjun’s grandma comes to everything, even the boring assembly ones.”

“I could be persuaded.” She pulled out a leg of lamb, potatoes, a bag of pumpkin, a bunch of silverbeet still gritty with garden dirt, and set to peeling with the brisk, unhurried efficiency of someone who’d done it ten thousand times before.

“Tell you what. While I cook, you can ask me anything else you like, and I’ll answer as honestly as an old woman’s allowed to. Fair trade?”

“Anything?”

“Within reason.” He took her up on it immediately and at enormous length, working his way through her favourite colour, whether she’d ever broken a bone, if she was scared of spiders, and whether she thought he was old enough for a phone, while the kitchen filled slowly with the smell of rosemary and hot fat and potatoes turning golden in the pan, pumpkin roasting sweet alongside them, a pot of silverbeet going soft with butter on the back burner.

It was, I realised, watching the two of them from the doorway, the first properly home-cooked Sunday roast this kitchen had ever seen, and something about the ordinariness of it, gravy and mint sauce and a boy interrogating his own great-grandmother about spiders, settled something in my chest that thirty years of questions hadn’t managed to. By the time Damian came to find us, drawn by the smell as much as anything, Noah had moved on to asking whether Nana Flo could cook roast every single Sunday from now on, and she was already agreeing before I’d had the chance to answer for either of us.

34:T2cd3,

Physio became a strange, tender kind of ritual, the two of us alone most afternoons in the room Damian had quietly converted into something between a gym and a clinic, mats and resistance bands and, taped to the wall where I’d see it every session, a printed sheet of exercises from the actual physiotherapist I’d seen exactly once before deciding Damian’s patience made a better substitute.

“Again,” he said, holding my wrist steady while I worked my shoulder through its range, wincing at the places it still refused to go easily.

“Small movements. You don’t have to prove anything to me.”

“I’m not trying to prove anything.”

“You’re gritting your teeth like this is a competition.” He caught my chin, turned my face to his, something soft under the mock severity.

“It isn’t. You heal at your own pace, and I will sit here counting reps with you for as long as that takes, however long that is.” He was, if I’m honest, better at it than any actual physiotherapist could have been, patient in a way that had centuries behind it, attentive to every small flinch before I’d even fully registered the discomfort myself. Some afternoons the exercises gave way to nothing more than him holding my hand between both of his, working the stiffness out of my fingers one knuckle at a time while I told him about my day, and those afternoons, I think, did more for me than any of the actual stretches. Nana Flo’s lessons happened in the evenings, once Noah was down, at a table in the corner of the library Damian hadn’t known he owned until she’d requisitioned it on her second day, and which had apparently been sitting untouched under dust sheets since some previous decade of his very long life.

“Magic isn’t will alone,” she told me, that first proper evening, laying out a collection of small cloth bundles across the table between us, dried herbs I didn’t have names for yet, a scatter of stones in colours I hadn’t seen outside of jewellery shop windows.

“It’s attention. Most people who fail at it aren’t lacking power. They’re lacking patience to actually look at what they’re working with.” She had a book. It mattered, later, in ways neither of us understood yet, and it was bound in leather gone soft and dark with age, its pages a strange, thick vellum that didn’t feel like any paper I’d touched before, and the writing inside moved between at least three languages I could identify and several more I couldn’t, careful diagrams in the margins, notes in different hands layered over centuries.

“It’s been in our family longer than either of us can properly account for,” she said, turning pages with the particular reverence of someone handling something alive.

“Some of it traces back to the old Sibylline traditions, the prophetic texts the Romans themselves half-feared and half-worshipped. Some of it’s older than Rome, folded in from wherever our line passed through on its way to wherever you and I ended up. Etruscan charm-work, here.” She tapped a page dense with small, careful sigils.

“Greek herb-lore, layered in later, from someone who clearly knew what they were doing with willow bark and vervain.”

“And this is what I’m supposed to learn from?”

“This is what you’re supposed to learn to listen to.” She corrected me gently.

“The book doesn’t teach so much as it remembers, and it will only give up what it thinks you’re ready to carry.” She started me small, which felt, at the time, almost insultingly small. A pinch of dried rosemary between my fingers, a single smooth grey stone, and an instruction to simply hold both and notice what I felt, nothing more, for the better part of a week before she’d let me attempt anything at all resembling a working. I understood, eventually, what she meant about attention. The stone was cold, and then, held long enough, wasn’t. The rosemary had a texture I’d never actually noticed before, brittle and soft at once. The flower happened on a Tuesday, three weeks into my lessons, an ordinary potted geranium Nana Flo had set on the table specifically for the purpose, its one remaining bloom well past its best.

“Don’t will it,” she said, watching me settle my hand around the stem the way she’d taught me, eyes closed, breath slow.

“Ask it. There’s a difference, and the difference is the entire lesson.” I don’t know how to properly describe what I did. I felt for the same place inside myself the scream in the cave had come from, the same place that had failed me entirely on the reserve, and found, this time, something smaller and steadier waiting there instead of a total, overwhelming flood. I asked, the way she’d told me to, some wordless, careful request directed at a half-dead flower, and felt warmth move down through my arm and into my fingers, gentle as anything, nothing like the white detonation of that morning with Silas. The geranium bloomed. Not dramatically, not all at once, but properly, petals unfurling soft and slow, colour deepening back into something rich and alive, and I opened my eyes to find Nana Flo watching me with an expression that undid something in my chest, pride so plain it was almost difficult to look at directly.

“There she is,” she said, quietly, and I understood, hearing it, that some part of her had been waiting thirty years to say exactly that. I healed slowly after that, the cast finally coming off, the stitches dissolving into thin, pink lines that Nana Flo assured me would fade to nothing within the year, and Damian, through all of it, treated me like something perpetually on the verge of breaking, careful in a way that had started, by the fourth week, to genuinely wear on me. It came to a head on a Thursday night, the two of us alone in our room, Nana Flo already down the hall reading by lamplight and Noah long asleep. I’d caught him watching me undress for bed with that same careful, cataloguing look he’d worn since the reserve, checking each scar like it was a wound he’d personally failed to prevent.

“Stop it,” I said, more sharply than I meant to.

“Stop what?”

“Looking at me like I’m made of glass.” I turned to face him properly, my shirt half off, the four thin lines still healing pink along my forearm on full display.

“I am not going to shatter, Damian. I want you. I have wanted you for weeks, and every single time I’ve reached for you, you’ve found some careful reason to hold back, and I am so tired of feeling like my own body has become something you’re afraid to touch.” “Sarah—”

“I mean it.” My voice cracked on it, and I let it.

“Please. I need you to want me the way you used to, scars and all, instead of treating every mark on me like something you’re grieving.” He was quiet a long moment, something raw moving behind his eyes, and when he finally crossed the room to me, it was slow, deliberate, his hands settling at my waist like he was still asking permission with every inch of the movement.

“I look at you,” he said, low, “and I see every single moment I failed to keep this from happening to you. That’s not about you being fragile, Sarah. That’s about me not knowing how to forgive myself yet.”

“Then let me help you forgive yourself.” I pulled his mouth down to mine.

“Touch me like you mean it. Please.” He gave in slowly, and then, once he understood I meant it, entirely. It matters, given what came after, that there was nothing frantic in it, nothing of the fierce, desperate need that had marked so many of our other nights together. He undressed me like something precious rather than something fragile, an important distinction I felt in every unhurried pass of his hands, worshipping each scar with his mouth rather than avoiding it, until I understood, properly, that he’d needed this every bit as much as I had, needed proof that I still wanted all of him despite everything his world had cost me.

He was slow and thorough and impossibly tender, taking his time with every part of me like the whole night belonged to nothing but this, and when he finally settled inside me, both of us moving together in an unhurried rhythm that built and built without ever losing its gentleness, I felt something in both of us finally exhale properly for the first time in a month. When he finally let go, it was with my name pressed soft into my hair, and I felt him shudder through it in a way that had nothing left of restraint in it at all, just relief, just love, plain and total. I didn’t let him roll away after. I climbed over him instead, still joined, still feeling the aftershocks of him moving gently through me, and braced my hands against his chest, looking down at a face gone open and unguarded in the low lamplight.

“Feed on me,” I said.

“Sarah.” His hands came up to my hips, not pushing me away, not quite.

“We’ve talked about this.”

“I know what we talked about. I’m asking anyway.” I leaned down until my mouth was at his ear.

“I trust you with everything I am. I want you to have this too. Please, Damian. I’m asking you properly, with my whole self, not because I’m scared or because something’s chasing us. Just because I want to give you every part of me there is.” He was quiet, and I felt him fighting it, five hundred years of careful restraint waging one last battle against a request he’d refused a dozen times already, and I held very still, still moving faintly around him, and waited.

“If anything feels wrong,” he said finally, voice wrecked, “you tell me, and I stop immediately.”

“I promise.” He tilted my throat gently to one side, and pressed a last, soft kiss to the pulse point there, and bit down. What happened next was nothing like any bond I’d read about in Nana Flo’s book, nothing like anything either of us had experienced before, either. Because he was still inside me when he fed, still moving, still part of me in every physical sense a body could manage, and the moment his teeth found the vein, I felt myself pulled somewhere else entirely, not just his memories arriving the way they had in the cave, but something deeper, some current running both directions at once, his mind opening to mine as completely as mine was opening to his.

Light bloomed behind my closed eyes, gold and endless, and I understood, distantly, that I could feel his pleasure as my own and mine as his, both of us folding into a single continuous loop with no clear edge left between where he ended and I began. It didn’t feel like drowning, the way the last feeding had. It felt like completion, like two halves of something ancient finally, finally closing the distance between them. Nana Flo’s voice reached me from somewhere very far away, from down the hallway, from a book that had apparently just done something neither of us had asked it to.

“An infinity bond,” I heard her breathe, awestruck, frightened, from a doorway neither of us had heard open.

“Sarah. Do you have any idea how rare that is?” The gold light held a moment longer, wrapping around both of us like something that had been waiting five hundred years to finally close its circle, before it slowly, gently, began to fade.

35:T1cfa,

Nana Flo didn’t say much more that night, beyond the words that had frozen both of us where we lay. She simply closed the book she’d been carrying, set it carefully on the end of our bed like something that might bruise if handled wrong, and told us both, gently but with absolutely no room for argument, that we’d talk properly in the morning, once we’d all had time to understand what we’d actually done. I didn’t sleep. I don’t think Damian did either, though that was less unusual for him. We lay tangled together in the aftermath of it, and I could feel him still, faintly, at the very edges of my own mind, a warmth that hadn’t been there before that night, steady and quiet, like a second heartbeat I hadn’t known I was missing until it arrived.

“Can you feel me too?” I asked, somewhere near three in the morning, testing the shape of the question as much as the bond itself.

“Constantly.” His voice was rough with something that wasn’t quite sleep, since he didn’t need sleep, but felt like it anyway.

“It’s extraordinary, Sarah. And a little frightening, if I’m honest. I’ve had five hundred years of my own head to myself. I’m not sure I know how to be a person who isn’t alone in there anymore.”

“Is that a bad thing?”

“No.” He pulled me closer, pressed his mouth to my temple.

“It might be the best thing that’s ever happened to me. That doesn’t make it not frightening.” Nana Flo was waiting for us at the kitchen table the next morning, the old book open in front of her, two mugs of tea already poured and going cold, and an expression on her face I hadn’t seen from her yet, something between awe and a very old kind of dread.

“An infinity bond,” she said, without preamble, once we’d both sat down, “doesn’t happen by accident. I want you to understand that before anything else. It isn’t a stronger version of ordinary feeding, and it isn’t simply love expressing itself efficiently. It’s a joining. Soul work, older than most of what’s written in this book, and it only takes root between two people who are already, in some sense, the same thing wearing different shapes.”

“Meaning what?” Damian asked.

“Meaning I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this happened the same season Sarah’s power woke properly.” She turned a page, careful, deliberate.

“The bond has made you both stronger. It has also made you both far easier to find. Two souls tied together like that give off a kind of signature, to anyone who knows how to look for it. The world you come from, Damian, the ones still hunting for whatever’s left of Antonia’s line. They will feel this. If they haven’t already.” The kitchen went very quiet. “Then we get ready,” I said, before the silence could settle into fear.

“You said there’s a next step. Something that finishes what the geranium started. Tell me what it is.” Nana Flo was quiet a moment, and then she reached into the deep pocket of her cardigan and drew out a small, worn velvet pouch, older than anything else in the room except the book itself, and set it on the table between us with the particular reverence of someone handing over something she’d carried far longer than she’d ever wanted to. Inside was a ring, plain silver gone dark with age, a single stone set into it that looked, in the morning light, like it was holding a very small storm inside itself, colour shifting each time I tilted my head to look properly.

“This has been in our line since before your mother, since before me,” she said, quietly.

“It doesn’t grant power so much as it opens the door power’s already standing behind. I have been waiting thirty years for the day you’d be ready to wear it, and I confess I hoped that day would come further from danger than this one has, but I don’t think either of us gets to choose our timing anymore.” I picked it up. It was warm, absurdly warm for a piece of old silver that had been sitting in a cardigan pocket, and the moment I slid it onto my finger I felt something settle into place inside me that I hadn’t known was unsettled, like a held breath I’d been carrying my whole life finally allowed to let go.

“There she is,” Nana Flo said again, the same words from the geranium, except this time her voice shook properly around them. It was Damian who noticed, two mornings later, standing very still at the kitchen window while the rest of us ate breakfast around him.

“Someone’s been at the treeline,” he said, quiet enough that Noah, three spoonfuls into his cereal, didn’t look up.

“All night. I could smell it from upstairs. Gone now, but they were there for hours.”

“Vampire?” I asked, my stomach dropping.

“No.” He frowned, something puzzled and old moving behind his eyes.

“Human. Or human enough to pass for it. But there’s something underneath the scent I don’t recognise at all. Nothing I’ve ever come across, in five hundred years of learning to tell one kind of danger from another.” He looked at Nana Flo.

“Does that mean anything to you?” Nana Flo had gone very still over her own tea.

“It might,” she said slowly, “and I don’t like what it might mean.” She set her cup down with great care.

“There is a clan, Damian, older than the coven that made you, followers of Cybele herself, who have hunted witches from our family line for longer than I have records of. I don’t know why. I have spent thirty years trying to find the why and never once managed it. I only know what’s left behind, when they finish.” Her hands tightened around the mug.

“The deaths are never simple. Never quick, when they can help it. Always as though they’re trying to take something out of the woman they’ve caught, rather than simply ending her. I have always assumed they’re looking for exactly what you’re now wearing on your hand, Sarah, though I have never once managed to prove it.” She stood, crossed to the window herself, and looked out at the treeline with an expression that made her look, for the first time since I’d met her again, genuinely afraid.

“If they’ve found their way to Glenfrost,” she said, “then whatever’s coming next isn’t going to wait politely for us to be ready. And I don’t believe, my love, that this was ever going to be a single fight we win and then go home from.” Outside, past the glass, past the frost-heavy grass and the dark line of trees, something moved, brief and deliberate, gone again before any of us could properly see it, leaving nothing behind but the faint, cold certainty that we had just been watched, and that whoever had done the watching had wanted, very precisely, to be noticed. Nana Flo turned back to the table, to Damian’s hand already finding mine, to Noah still blessedly, obliviously spooning cereal, and to the ring on my finger catching the morning light like something finally, fully awake.

“Well,” she said, quiet, steady, the fear in her voice giving way to something harder underneath it.

“It seems this was never going to be the end of it. This is only the beginning, all of you. I hope you’re ready, because I don’t think it’s going to give us much more time to get that way.”

36:Ta28,

I dreamed of the tree first. Not the way I remembered it from that night in the cellar, leaves stripping themselves into a circling wind. This was stiller, older, a carving I recognised from somewhere I couldn’t immediately place, broad branches rendered in worn stone, an inscription beneath it in a language I couldn’t read and somehow understood anyway. Eternal, it said, or meant, or simply was, the word arriving in me the way Damian’s memories had, whole and certain without needing translation. The dream shifted, the way dreams do, no seam between one place and the next.

I was standing in front of Cybele’s temple again, the Palatine Hill spread out gold and hazy behind me, and Damian’s hand was in mine the way it had been that real afternoon, and I felt myself trip, the way I actually had, my foot catching some loose stone at the temple’s edge. I watched, in the dream, a single drop of my own blood fall from a scraped toe and land on the ancient step. The stone drank it. I don’t have a better word for what I watched happen. The blood simply vanished into old rock like the step itself had been thirsty for it, and something in the dream understood, with total, dreaming certainty, that this had mattered, that it had never simply been an accident.

Then the ring. Nana Flo’s ring, small and silver, turning slowly in midair the way objects do in dreams, without any hand holding it, the stone at its centre catching light from nowhere at all. Three images. The tree. The blood on the stone. The ring. They began to move toward each other, slow at first and then faster, the way pieces do when a puzzle finally understands its own shape, and I watched them slide together into a single mark, familiar, unmistakable, the same endless golden loop that had wrapped around Damian and me the night his teeth found my throat and something in both of us finally closed its circle.

I came awake with my heart slamming so hard I could feel it in my own throat, the room dark and cold and entirely real around me. Damian’s eyes were already open. He was watching me in the dark, perfectly still, the way he went still when something had frightened him too badly to move, and I understood, in the half-second before either of us spoke, that whatever I’d just seen, he’d seen some version of it too, pulled through the same open door that now ran permanently between us.

“It’s all connected,” we said, together, the same four words landing in the dark at exactly the same moment, and neither of us needed to ask what the other one meant.
