In the remote village of Grey Hollow, a dense forest loomed - a place the locals called the Whispering Woods. Legends claimed the trees spoke, warning travelers of an ancient curse. Few dared to enter, and those who did rarely returned.
One stormy evening, a young skeptic named Eliza arrived in Grey Hollow. She was a journalist, eager to debunk the superstition. Armed with a flashlight and her recorder, she ventured into the woods despite the villagers' pleas.
At first, the forest was eerily silent, the only sound being the crunch of leaves underfoot. But as Eliza ventured deeper, whispers began. Faint and indistinct, they seemed to come from all directions. She froze, turning her flashlight wildly.
"Who's there?" she called, her voice trembling.
No answer. Just the whispers, growing louder. Her recorder picked up the sounds - fragmented words and chilling laughter. The whispers started to form a single phrase: "Turn back."
Ignoring the warning, Eliza pressed on, documenting everything. Then she found it - a massive tree with gnarled roots, its bark scarred with strange symbols. At its base lay a decayed journal. She flipped it open, reading about a traveler who had entered the woods decades ago. The last entry read: "The tree sees all. I hear them calling my name."
Suddenly, the whispers stopped. The silence was deafening. Then a guttural voice boomed, "You were warned."
The ground beneath her shifted. Roots sprang to life, wrapping around her legs. She screamed, dropping her flashlight. In the dim light, she saw faces - etched into the bark of the surrounding trees, their mouths contorted in eternal agony.
Eliza struggled, but the roots dragged her toward the massive tree. Its trunk split open, revealing a hollow void that reeked of decay. She clawed at the ground, but it was useless. The last thing she saw before the darkness consumed her was her reflection in the bark - a face frozen in terror.
The next morning, her recorder was found at the forest's edge, still running. On it, the villagers heard her final, bloodcurdling scream, followed by a faint whisper:
"Another joins us."
