Under an old banyan tree, in a small village no one really talks about, lived a mouse named Chintu. His burrow was right next to a garden full of sunflowers—and most mornings, that's where we found him, searching for crumbs.

But one rainy morning was different.

Near the garden wall, he heard it.. A faint, scared little chirp. He stopped, looked closer, and there she was — a baby sparrow, stuck in the wet mud, half buried under a fallen leaf. Shivering. Barely moving.

"Hey. You okay?" Chintu asked, inching closer.

"I fell," she said, voice cracking. "My wings won't work. I can't fly back up."

Chintu glanced at the tree above, way too tall, then back at the soaked little bird in front of him. He didn't really think it through. "Okay. First, let's get you warm. We'll sort the rest out after."

He moved the leaf, grabbed some dry grass, made a small warm patch near his burrow. Then ran off and came back with a few seeds and half a piece of bread — the one he'd actually been saving for himself.

"Thank you," she said between bites. "I'm Chiku."

"Chintu." He smiled. "You're okay now."

Days turned into a routine. Chintu built her a proper little nest — leaves, bits of cotton, tucked somewhere safe from cats and crows. Every evening, after food, they'd just... talk. About the farmer down the road. The ducks by the pond. That old mango tree that dropped fruit every summer, more than anyone could eat.

Chiku still couldn't fly. But her eyes? Sharp. One afternoon she spotted a cat sneaking toward Chintu's burrow and screamed out a warning chirp — loud enough that he made it inside just in time.

"That was close," he said, catching his breath. "You saved me there."

She just shrugged it off. "That's what friends do."

Weeks went by like that. Her feathers thickened. Wings got stronger. Then one morning — bright, ordinary, nothing special about it — she hopped onto a low branch, flapped hard, and just... flew. Circled the garden twice. Landed back next to Chintu, completely out of breath and grinning.

"I did it! Chintu, I'm flying!"

He just looked at her, proud. "Knew you would."

She eventually moved up into the trees, joined the other sparrows like she was always meant to. But she never really left. Every single day, without missing one, she'd swoop down and drop something outside his burrow — a berry, a shiny seed, whatever she found. Just to say she hadn't forgotten.

The other animals never quite got it. A mouse who stayed on the ground, a bird who lived in the sky — how does that even work? But Chintu and Chiku stopped caring what anyone thought a long time ago. To them, friendship was never about how you move through the world. It was just about who shows up.

And under that same old banyan tree, their friendship kept growing — slow, steady, the way sunflowers keep turning toward the sun, every single day, without anyone telling them to.
