Prologue
What if a girl inherits an old, forgotten estate deep in the forest - only to discover she's already dead, and the house that welcomed her is a soul trap, collecting echoes of the departed through generations?
In the heart of a rotting forest, wrapped in mist and silence, stood a house no one remembered building. Locals spoke of it in hushed tones, if at all. It was said that if you listened closely at night, you could hear the trees whispering its name. But no one dared speak it out loud.
Chapter One: Inheritance
The letter came on a Tuesday. Cream-colored envelope, thick and old-fashioned, with no return address. Lila's name was written in black ink, cursive so elegant it looked printed. She opened it with trembling fingers.
"To Miss Lila Vexley,
You are the sole heir to the Vexley Estate. Your grandmother, Rowena Vexley, has passed, leaving the family property in your name. Enclosed are the deed and directions to the residence.
Condolences,
Wolfe & Wolfe Legal"
Lila had never heard of Rowena Vexley. Her parents never mentioned any family outside their small, insular trio. But they were gone now - lost in a fire that left no survivors but her. No one had claimed her. No distant cousins, no long-lost aunts. Until this.
She folded the letter back into its envelope and stared at the map. The estate was nestled in a stretch of nameless woods three hours north of town. A red "X" marked a crooked road branching off from the highway.
She felt something stir inside her. Not fear. Not curiosity.
Recognition.
Chapter Two: The House
The drive was uneventful, until it wasn't. The deeper Lila ventured into the forest, the more the world seemed to unravel. The trees grew thicker, bending toward the road like they were listening. Fog swallowed her headlights. Her GPS died.
Then, suddenly, the house.
It loomed from the mist like it had grown there. Three stories tall, with Gothic windows like open eyes and a sagging roof veiled in moss. Ivy crawled up its sides like veins.
The moment she stepped onto the porch, the air changed. It was heavier, full of a silence so deep it pressed against her chest.
The key turned easily. The door creaked open.
And the house sighed.
Chapter Three: Whispers
The first night, she heard them.
Whispers.
They came from behind the walls, soft and indecipherable. At first, she thought it was the pipes. Then she realized the whispers grew louder when she approached certain rooms. The library. The cellar. The mirror-lined hallway on the second floor.
In the hallway, she saw a woman in a reflection. Pale. Long dark hair. Standing just behind her - only to vanish when she turned around.
Lila tried to tell herself she was tired. Grieving. Imagining things.
But then the whispers started saying her name.
"Lila... come back... come see..."
Chapter Four: Reflections
The mirrors became her obsession. She started avoiding them. Then she started testing them. In each one, she saw not her own reflection, but different versions of herself. Some older. Some with eyes that weren't hers.
One night, she caught sight of a boy in a puddle on the floor. He looked at her, terrified, mouthing something. Before she could react, he sank beneath the reflection like it was water.
She smashed the mirror.
It bled.
Chapter Five: The Truth
She found the journal in the attic. Bound in leather, brittle with age. It belonged to Rowena Vexley.
"This house is a gate," it read. "It does not keep the dead out. It keeps them in. Every Vexley child is called back. Some resist. Some forget. But eventually, they all return."
Lila dropped the journal. Her hands were shaking.
She wasn't called here to inherit.
She was called here to stay.
And then she remembered the fire.
Chapter Six: The Fire
She dreamed of it, again and again. But this time, the dream didn't end before the smoke took her. She remembered the heat. The scream. Her scream.
The realization landed like a falling star: she had died.
She was never meant to leave the fire. But something had pulled her spirit to this house instead - something ancient and hungry.
A collector.
A keeper.
She wasn't the heir.
She was the offering.
Chapter Seven: The Others
She began to see them clearly now. The souls trapped within the house. Some whispered. Some screamed. All relived their deaths endlessly - echoes, bouncing off invisible walls.
They pleaded with her. Warned her.
The house fed on memory. On pain.
The longer she stayed, the less she remembered her own name, her own face. Her voice began to echo back at her - not in her head, but from behind the walls.
Chapter Eight: Escape
She tried to leave.
The front door opened to darkness.
The windows showed only the room she was standing in.
Every hallway led her back to the same mirror-lined corridor.
She screamed. The house echoed it back tenfold, warping it, twisting it into laughter.
"You were always here," it whispered. "You just forgot."
Chapter Nine: Acceptance
Lila stopped running. She began listening.
In doing so, she heard not just the whispers - but the story beneath them. Each soul had a piece of the truth. Each echo held a thread.
She pieced them together, built a map in her mind. A map to the heart of the house.
The mirror room.
She stepped into it willingly.
In the final mirror, she saw herself. Not the girl who had come here. The one who belonged here.
A Vexley.
She reached out and touched the glass.
It gave way like water.
Epilogue: The Next One
Somewhere far away, a young boy receives a letter.
"To Master James Vexley,
You are the sole heir..."
The house sighs.
And waits.
Book Two: The House That Remembers
Prologue: The Dream Gate
James Vexley, now nine, dreams vividly of the house before ever stepping foot in it. A mysterious figure in a mirror (Lila) whispers his name, urging him to "remember." He wakes with a mirrored key clutched in his hand - something he did not have before.
Chapter One: The Letter (Again)
James receives another letter. His father burns it, but James already knows the path. He sneaks away and begins the journey alone.
