Following her mother's sudden death, 14-year-old Elara struggles with grief and her father, Mark's, distant behavior. Less than six months later, Mark announces he is marrying Clara, an old friend who quickly moved into their lives. Elara feels betrayed and replaced as Clara and her son, Leo, take over their home, erasing her mother's memory. Elara's emotional and academic life deteriorates, exacerbated by Clara's dismissive attitude. Overhearing Clara call her "difficult," Elara retaliates by deliberately smashing Clara's prized wine glass. After a period of isolation and despair, Elara's art teacher helps her express her grief through drawing. Elara then finds her late mother's gardening journal, inspiring her to plant sunflowers as a connection to her mother. When some of the sprouts are deliberately trampled, Elara confronts her stepmother and father, expressing her profound pain about feeling unseen and her mother's memory being erased. This outburst prompts Mark to realize his neglect; he sets boundaries with Clara and begins to actively support Elara, leading to a fragile sense of hope and resilience for Elara as her sunflowers grow.
