The silence was deafening, a heavy blanket that suffocated our home. I was just a child, but I knew that the stillness was a warning, My mother's eyes, once bright and full of laughter, had dimmed, like the lights in our house that seemed to flicker with every argument. I felt the crushing pressure of a love that had turned toxic.
I witnessed my father's explosive anger firsthand when he burned my mother's clothes in a fit of rage. Her crime? Spending time with friends. What's worse, my grandmother condoned his behavior, praising him for exerting control over my mother.
At home, my father's behavior was a constant source of stress. While my mother worked tirelessly to provide for our family, he stayed at home, idle and unhelpful. When there wasn't food on the table, he'd lash out at her, verbally and physically abusing her. These disturbing scenes played out repeatedly, leaving me traumatized and anxious.
As a result, I struggled to focus on my schoolwork and form meaningful relationships with my peers. Despite being a bright student, the emotional turmoil at home held me back, causing me to fall behind academically and socially.
