Chapter 1 - Racing Hearts, Crashing Waves

The night air was thick with the scent of rain, the asphalt still slick from an earlier storm. Damon tightened his grip on the handlebars of his motorcycle, his heart pounding - not from the speed, but from the sight of her up ahead. Little did she know, he loved her.

Riley.

He spotted her up ahead, weaving effortlessly through traffic, her body perfectly in sync with the machine beneath her. The neon city lights cast an eerie glow on her sleek black bike, making her look almost unreal.

They were on the same road, running parallel like ghosts in each other's lives.

Riley grinned, twisting the throttle harder. "Try to keep up, Damon!"

Damon smirked, pushing his bike faster. "You wish."

A car - hidden in the blind spot - lurched into Riley's path.

Damon barely had time to process what was happening before she slammed on the brakes. The back wheel of her bike skidded. The road, still wet, betrayed her.

Her body launched over the guardrail.

Damon's breath caught.

Then - a splash.

Damon barely remembered stopping his bike. His heartbeat thundered in his ears as he sprinted to the edge, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

"RILEY!"

The ocean churned below, endless and merciless. His chest tightened; the edges of his vision blurred. No. No. No.

Damon froze, his pulse slamming against his ribs.

The water broke apart, and she surfaced.

Not just a person gasping for air - but a vision, breathless, desperate, unguarded.

The moonlight caught the water cascading off her skin, her soaked hair sticking to her cheeks, her lips parted as she fought to breathe. In that moment, she wasn't just Riley, the reckless racer.

She was something fragile. Something devastatingly beautiful.

And for the first time, Damon wasn't the only one who saw.

The car that caused the accident - a shadow slowing, watching.

His stomach clenched.

Her hijab was gone.

Her mask, ripped off beneath the helmet, grasping for breath, leaving her uncovered. For the first time, Damon saw what had always been concealed - her beauty, raw and exposed under the moonlight.

"Riley! Stay there - I'm coming!" He was already yanking off his jacket, his body tense, desperate to reach her.

And she knew it.

Panic flickered in her eyes, her breath coming sharper - not from the crash, not from the cold - but from the realization.

She swam - rushed - toward the rocks, her arms weaker than before, her body barely holding itself together.

Damon climbed down after her, his chest tight with something more than just worry - a suffocating, gut-wrenching need to protect her.

By the time she reached him, she was gasping for help, desperate, weak.

Damon grabbed her arms, his voice sharp with panic.

"Riley - are you okay? Can you breathe? Are you hurt?"

She barely lifted her gaze. Her lips parted - like she wanted to answer.

Then - she collapsed into his arms.

Her soaked body crashed against his, her fingers gripping his jacket for half a second before going limp.

Damon's heart stopped.

His arms locked around her instantly, his breath ragged.

"Riley - Riley!" He shook her slightly, his voice breaking. She wasn't answering.

His head snapped up, eyes blazing with fury.

"You - call the damn ambulance! NOW!" he roared at the guy standing frozen nearby.

The man jolted, fumbling for his phone, his hands shaking as he dialed.

Damon's chest was heaving. His hands, calloused and rough, cradled Riley carefully, pressing her against him. His mind was screaming, racing - was she unconscious? Was she in shock? Was she -

No.

No, she was breathing. Shallow, but breathing.

His hold on her tightened.

His breath was shaky as he ripped off his shirt and pressed it to her face, shielding her. Hiding her.
