Great Stories Speak Every Language

Explore original writing in the language you love, discover new voices, and make a little room on your reading list for stories from around the world.

Some stories sound different when they are told in the language that first gave them life. A childhood memory in Hindi. A mystery in Spanish. A poem-like story in Urdu. We believe those voices deserve to be discovered without having to become English first.

Short Story Lovers is growing into a home for original stories in many languages. You do not need a different account, website, or reading app for each language. The same community can take you to a completely different world of writing.

One place for many voices.

Our language collections are about stories written in their original languages, not automatically translated copies of English stories.

Find the language you love

Start at Stories by Language. Search for a language by its English or native name, or simply browse the collections. You can also use the Read in Your Language scroller on the homepage and Explore page.

Choose a language, such as Hindi, Spanish, Urdu, or French, to browse the stories available in that collection.

Some collections are just beginning. Even if a language has few stories today, its collection has a place on SSL and can grow as writers join.

Explore by mood or genre

Reading in your language should not mean giving up the genres you already enjoy. Open a language collection and choose a category, like Romance, Horror, Fantasy, or Mystery. You can browse standalone stories and multi-chapter stories, and use the usual sorting options when available.

Language and genre are different choices: one is how a story speaks, and the other is what kind of story you want to read.

Follow a language

When signed in, open a language collection and select Follow. This gives you an easy way to keep track of the languages you are interested in. You can unfollow whenever you want.

Following a language does not replace following individual authors, and it does not automatically translate or change the language of stories you read.

Search in the original language

Already know a title? Use the regular search icon and begin typing the story's name in its own script, whether that is English, Devanagari, Arabic script, or another supported writing system. Matching published stories can appear in the familiar search panel, and you can open them directly.

You do not need to change a search setting or turn on translation to find an original-language title.

A reading experience that respects the script

Stories display in their written language. Right-to-left writing, such as Urdu or Arabic, uses the appropriate reading direction for story text, while SSL's navigation remains familiar. Longer works are still available chapter by chapter.

We are not automatically translating an author's work. If a story is available only in Spanish, it remains a Spanish story unless its author also publishes another version.
