The Waiting Ends
She sat beneath the almond tree every day that week, heart pounding at every footstep, every birdcall, every gust of wind that bent the branches.
The village seemed to watch her again but this time with curiosity, even quiet excitement. Maybe, just maybe, the boy who left would return.
Then, just as the sun began to fall behind the hills one evening, she saw a figure walking down the dirt path. Broad shoulders. A slow, steady gait. A duffle bag swinging by his side.
Her heart stopped.
"Elijah?" she called, her voice trembling.
The man looked up and in that moment, time folded. Years disappeared. He smiled, and the lines on his face softened. "Amaya," he said, breathless.
She stood frozen as he stepped forward, then ran into his arms. The hug was long and full of everything unspoken. No questions. No explanations. Just love, breaking through years of silence.
