The entrance to the Time Maze wasn't marked on any map. Lyra led Arin to the edge of the village, where the forest met the cliffs. There, hidden beneath a tangle of vines and roots, was a stone archway carved with symbols that shimmered faintly in moonlight.
"This is it," Lyra said. "The Maze Between Moments. Elias built it to study time's flow. But when the breaches began, it turned against him."
Arin stepped forward. The air beneath the arch shimmered like heat over pavement. He reached out - and the moment his fingers touched the veil, the world twisted.
They were no longer in the forest.
They stood in a corridor made of shifting glass. Reflections danced across the walls - memories, futures, possibilities. Arin saw himself as a child, laughing with his parents. Then older, standing alone in the clock tower. Then… gone.
Lyra grabbed his hand. "Don't stare too long. The maze feeds on identity. It'll trap you in a version of yourself that never was."
They walked cautiously. The corridor bent and twisted, sometimes narrowing to a crawlspace, sometimes opening into vast chambers filled with floating clocks, melting staircases, and doors that led nowhere.
Suddenly, a voice echoed through the maze.
"You shouldn't be here."
Arin turned. A figure stepped from the shadows - tall, cloaked, with a face made of shifting gears. Its eyes glowed amber.
"You carry Elias's journal. That makes you dangerous."
Lyra stepped in front of Arin. "We're here to fix what's broken."
The figure tilted its head. "Time cannot be fixed. Only rewritten."
It raised a hand, and the corridor shattered. Arin and Lyra fell through a vortex of memories - Arin's first day of school, Lyra's training with Elias, the moment the clock tower stopped.
They landed hard in a circular chamber. In the center stood a pedestal with a glowing orb. Around it, six doors pulsed with light.
Lyra groaned. "The Trial of Echoes. Elias mentioned this. We have to pass it to reach the core."
Arin stepped toward the orb. As he touched it, a voice filled the room.
"To move forward, you must face what you've forgotten."
One of the doors creaked open.
Inside was a room from Arin's past - his childhood bedroom. But something was wrong. The walls were cracked, the toys broken, the bed empty.
A shadow stood in the corner.
"You left me," it whispered.
Arin's breath caught. It was his younger self - alone, afraid, abandoned.
Lyra stepped beside him. "You have to face it. Accept it. Heal it."
Arin knelt before the shadow. "I didn't forget you. I just didn't know how to carry you."
The shadow reached out - and merged with him.
The room dissolved. The orb glowed brighter. Another door opened.
Lyra smiled. "One trial down."
Arin looked at the remaining doors. "Let's find Elias. Before time runs out."
