Arin followed Lyra through the bustling streets of the future village, trying not to stare too much. Everything shimmered with strange energy - lamps that floated, books that whispered, even a cat that seemed to vanish and reappear with every blink.
Lyra led him to a narrow alley behind a bakery that smelled like cinnamon and ozone. She pulled out a small device from her jacket - a compass with no needle, just a swirling vortex at its center.
"This is a chronometer," she said. "It detects time fractures. Elias built it before he vanished."
The vortex spun faster, glowing blue.
"We're close," Lyra whispered.
They turned the corner and entered a courtyard. At first glance, it looked ordinary. But then Arin noticed something chilling.
A man stood mid-step, frozen in the air. A bird hovered inches from his shoulder, wings outstretched but unmoving. A fountain spilled water that hung in midair like glass.
Time had stopped.
Lyra stepped forward cautiously. "This is a frozen hour. A moment caught in a loop. If we don't seal it, it'll spread."
Arin stared at the man's face - eyes wide, mouth open in a silent scream. "What caused it?"
Lyra knelt beside the fountain and pulled out a small gear, pulsing with red light. "A corrupted time shard. These things leak chaos."
She handed it to Arin. The moment he touched it, his vision blurred. He saw flashes - Elias running through the tower, gears exploding, a shadow reaching out from the clock face.
Then it was gone.
Arin gasped. "I saw Elias. He was trying to stop something."
Lyra nodded. "The shadow. It's not just a breach. It's a being. A parasite feeding on broken time."
Arin looked around the frozen courtyard. "How do we fix this?"
Lyra took the shard and placed it into the chronometer. The vortex turned red, then gold. A pulse of light spread across the courtyard, and time resumed.
The man stumbled forward, the bird flew off, and the water splashed into the fountain.
Arin exhaled. "We did it."
Lyra smiled. "One breach down. Hundreds to go."
Arin looked at the journal in his bag. "We need to find Elias. Fast."
Lyra's eyes narrowed. "Then we'll need to go deeper. To the place where time first broke."
